To the north, it borders with the region of Western and Central Macedonia,to the south, with the region of Sterea Ellada, to the west, with the regionof Epirus, while to the east it borders the Aegean Sea. The countryside of Thessalia consists of abundant formations, with obviousdifferences in relatively small distances. The largest plain of Greece is foundin Thessalia, which runs through the Peneus River, the third most significantriver in the country. The plain is surrounded by tall mountains, such as Mt.Olympus, which is the tallest mountain in Greece (height 2,918 meters), Mt.Kissavos (or Mt. Ossa), Mt. Pelio, Mt. Othris, Mt. Agrafa and the southern sec-tion of the mountainous range of Pindos, from which another considerableriver, the Acheloos River flows. The artificial lake of Plastira or Tavropos inKarditsa is of considerable importance.
A few centuries ago, Mt. Olympus and Mt. Kissavos constituted a unifiedmountain range. The rain and spring water of the area could not bechanneled into the sea. The continuous rise in water level transformedthe Thessalian basin, which was surrounded by the mountains ofOlympus - Ossa - Pelio - Othris - Pindos - Hasia, into a boundless lake. The seismic break between Mt. Olympus and Mt. Kissavos was instigatedafter serious geological disruptions, such as the Defkaliona Flood nar-rated in Greek mythology. The Valley of Tempi was created and thewaters of Thessalia were emptied into the Thermaikos, leaving behind asa draining canal the Peneus River and its tributaries. Its remnants wereViveida/Karla and Lake Nessonida, as well as a large fertile plain.

Thessalia is known for the famous Greek myths, associated with the land:Olympus, the residence chosen by the Gods, Pelio, the mountain of the Centaursand Nymphs, Meteora, with its cliffs that take your breath away and bear witnessto the battle of the Giants against Zeus and the other Gods, as well as mythicalcharacters such as Achilles, the hero of the Trojan War, and Jason and theArgonauts who began their quest for the Golden Fleece in Thessalia. These mythsmolded Thessalia’s identity and still carry their glory to its every corner. As a result of its geographic and scenic advantages, one of most ancient civiliza-tions of Europe and mankind was developed in Thessalia. The first fossilized ani-mal relics and tools of the Palaeolithic Age which were found at the bank of theriver Peneus date back to 50,000 through 30,000 B.C. Additionally, settlementswhich belonged to the Neolithic Age have been discovered in Sesklo and Dimini. The unique and highly significant Theopetra Cave, can also be found in Thessalia. Its use by mankind has been proven, and dates back to at least 70,000 years agountil approximately 3,500 B.C., while findings from the cave are placed in theMiddle-Upper Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic prehistoric periods. The cave
is a compound of approximately 500 m2. It is located in the village of Theopetrain Kalabaka, and up until now is the only prehistoric site in Greece with findingsfrom all these periods of civilization. During the Bronze Age, Thessalia becamethe birthplace of the first Greek race and experienced significant developmentduring Mycenean times, while in 197 B.C., the area was seized by the Romans.During Byzantine times, Thessalia was part of the province of Greece, Larissabeing the capital; the Despotate of Thessalia was established upon the formationof the Nicean Empire in 1246. The Thessalians fought for the emancipation ofthe region from the Turks throughout the 19th century, and during World War II,their contribution to the battle against the German occupancy was significant. It is worthwhile to note that Georgios Karaiskakis, the hero of the War ofIndependence of 1821, was a native of Mavromati, Karditsa, and one can visitthe cave he was born in. Moreover, Nikolaos Plastiras, a native of Morfovouni,Karditsa, was a notable figure in modern Greek history, who envisioned the build-ing of the Tavropos dam, an idea that ended up in the creation of an artificiallake which bears his name.

Inland - ecotourismMoving towards inland Thessalia, there is a striking change in landscape.Several of the main mountains of Greece alternate with valleys, rivers and cul-tivated plains, and combine to create a captivating formation, where nature, myth, history and civilization come together.
MMtt.. OOllyymmppuuss,, the residence of the Gods, with its snowcovered tops and rich ecosystem is located in the pprreeffeecc--ttuurree ooff LLaarriissssaa. Its flora and fauna are the research mate-rial for many scientists. As a result of its rare ecologicalvalue, a large part of Mt. Olympus has been characterizedas a National Park, while UNESCO has declared the moun-tain ““tthhee BBiioosspphheerree’’ss SSeeddiimmeenntt””..Located near Mt. Olympus is KKiissssaavvooss (or OOssssaa), a moun-tain covered by dense forest, with impressive gorges, creeks and streams running down its mountainside. Alarge part of it has been described as the ““AAeesstthheettiiccFFoorreesstt ooff OOssssaa”” and is protected by the pan-EuropeanNatura 2000 Network. The river PPeenneeuuss flows through the narrow passagebetween Ossa and Olympus, shaping the impressive VVaalllleeyyooff TTeemmppii,, which at certain spots has a width of almost 40meters. The movements of the river and the abundantvegetation make up an attractive landscape, offeringexceptional land or water routes. At the mouth of the River Peneus, toward the Aegean, liesone of the most prominent wetlands of Greece, known as
the PPeenneeuuss DDeellttaa.. The area is protected by the RamsarTreaty and draws the interest of many scientists. Rare types of birds live at the Peneus Delta, and cor-morants, herons, and flamingos often make a distinctpresence. PPeelliioo,, the mountain of the mythical Centaurs who taught
their wisdom to Achilles, Hercules andAsklipios, dominates in the prefecture ofMMaaggnneessiiaa.. Collecting on its mountain-sides rare types of flora and fauna, as wellas protective eco-sites, Pelio has alsobeen placed in the Natura 2000 network.

Its abundant natural inheritance is not the only characteristic ofThessalia. Elements of the particular cultural physiognomy of Greece, from the prehistoric through the contemporary era, make their presenceknown through the interspersed mmoonnuummeennttss,, churches, Byzantine cas-tles and walls. The Fortress of Larissa and the Acropolis of Farsala in Larissa are must-see archeological monuments, while one can admire abundant collec-tions of interesting artifacts at the archeological museums of each city. One of Thessalia’s distinguishing characteristics is the numerous pre-served traditional settlements and their villages. One of the most significant monuments in the world, which is protect-ed by UNESCO, is the famous complex of mmoonnaasstteerriieess iinn MMeetteeoorraa in theprefecture of TTrriikkaallaa.. The first hermit monks first climbed the large rocksin the 11th century and gradually, over the next 600 years, 24 monas-teries, retreats and sketes flourished amongst the rocks. Visitors fromevery corner of the globe swarm there for reflection and prayer, to getacquainted with the life and art of the monks, to admire the preciousrelics, but also for the indescribable vista someone sets eyes on from the
“holy mountain”. RReelliiggiioouuss mmoonnuummeennttss, monasteries and churches lieinterspersed throughout Thessalia, making an impres-sion with their rich history, particular architecture, precious icons, murals and mosaics. A few of the moresignificant monasteries include the Holy Monastery ofOlympiotissa, the Holy Monastery of Sparmos and

The first Co-operative in the world was formed in this village, which was at its prime during the 18th and 19th centuries. Several other
scenic villages also exist in Larissa, such as Agia, Metaxohori,Megalovryso, Livadi and Rapsani. In the prefecture of MMaaggnneessiiaa in Pelio, among several scenic villages, one finds preserved traditional settlements, such as Makrynitsa, Milies,Byzitsa and Zagora, where the famous school “Ellinomouseio” wasformed in 1749. Riding the famous train of Pelio, one can discover many of its villages. It was constructed in 1895 by the Italian mechanic Evaristo De Kirikoand is considered one of the more enjoyable railroad excursions. TThheettrraaiinn ooff PPeelliioo is currently a popular choice for visitors for the routesVolos - Agria, Agria - Milies and Ano Lehonia – Milies. The mountainous villages of TTrriikkaallaa, such as Kastraki, Diava and Aidona, are also scenic and welcoming. DDeeaarr ffrriieennddss,,
The region of Thessalia occupies the central eastern region of Greece’s mainland. It is an area with abundant natural landscape,a rich historical background and a dynamic present. As the birthplace and location where the gods and heroes of mythologythrived and, as an area where significant occurrences in Greek history took place, Thessalia is positioning itself closer to theEuropean ‘reality’, while respecting and preserving its traditions. For each visitor, Thessalia’s geographic formations are of particular interest. Imposing massifs surround the Thessalian plains, which are impressive both in size and in their cultivation, while the Aegean Sea to the east shapes the exquisite coastline. Thesegeographic formations are adorned by rivers, forests, caves and rocks clusters, as well as lakes, bays, ports and islands.Contemporary urban centres with abundant commercial and business activities comprise the physiognomy of 21st centuryThessalia. Comparatively, the small towns and communities of the countryside preserve an important part of the traditional pas-times and products. As a result of continuous resident activities, their genuine desire for growth and expansion and State sup-port, Thessalia covers the needs of even the most demanding visitor. The developed road and rail network, ports and airportsallow easy access to and from every destination. The hospitality infrastructure is remarkable and constantly being upgraded, withregards to accommodation and services. We are investing in the future with the goal of transforming Thessalia into a vibranttourist destination offering a truly attractive place of recreation for visitors. A diversity of alternate forms of tourism are beingorganized and offered, whether it be at high-traffic centres or quiet resorts. Additionally, high quality cultural activities takeplace in many areas of Thessalia. This comprehensive offering assures a complete recreation and relaxation destination.Friends, we invite you all to enjoy the hospitality of Thessalia. We believe that it will be a very interesting experience “at theland where the myths were born”.
The General Secretary of the Prefecture of ThessaliaFFoottiiooss GGoouuppaass
