To the north, it borders with the region of Western and Central Macedonia,to the south, with the region of Sterea Ellada, to the west, with the regionof Epirus, while to the east it borders the Aegean Sea. The countryside of Thessalia consists of abundant formations, with obviousdifferences in relatively small distances. The largest plain of Greece is foundin Thessalia, which runs through the Peneus River, the third most significantriver in the country. The plain is surrounded by tall mountains, such as Mt.Olympus, which is the tallest mountain in Greece (height 2,918 meters), Mt.Kissavos (or Mt. Ossa), Mt. Pelio, Mt. Othris, Mt. Agrafa and the southern sec-tion of the mountainous range of Pindos, from which another considerableriver, the Acheloos River flows. The artificial lake of Plastira or Tavropos inKarditsa is of considerable importance.

A few centuries ago, Mt. Olympus and Mt. Kissavos constituted a unifiedmountain range. The rain and spring water of the area could not bechanneled into the sea. The continuous rise in water level transformedthe Thessalian basin, which was surrounded by the mountains ofOlympus - Ossa - Pelio - Othris - Pindos - Hasia, into a boundless lake.The seismic break between Mt. Olympus and Mt. Kissavos was instigatedafter serious geological disruptions, such as the Defkaliona Flood nar-rated in Greek mythology. The Valley of Tempi was created and thewaters of Thessalia were emptied into the Thermaikos, leaving behind asa draining canal the Peneus River and its tributaries. Thessalia is known for the famous Greek myths, associated with the land:Olympus, the residence chosen by the Gods, Pelio, the mountain of the Centaursand Nymphs, Meteora, with its cliffs that take your breath away and bear witnessto the battle of the Giants against Zeus and the other Gods, as well as mythicalcharacters such as Achilles, the hero of the Trojan War, and Jason and theArgonauts who began their quest for the Golden Fleece in Thessalia. These mythsmolded Thessalia’s identity and still carry their glory to its every corner.As a result of its geographic and scenic advantages, one of most ancient civiliza-tions of Europe and mankind was developed in Thessalia. The first fossilized ani-mal relics and tools of the Palaeolithic Age which were found at the bank of theriver Peneus date back to 50,000 through 30,000 B.C. Additionally, settlementswhich belonged to the Neolithic Age have been discovered in Sesklo and Dimini.The unique and highly significant Theopetra Cave, can also be found in Thessalia.Its use by mankind has been proven, and dates back to at least 70,000 years agountil approximately 3,500 B.C., while findings from the cave are placed in theMiddle-Upper Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic prehistoric periods. The cave

is a compound of approximately 500 m2. It is located in the village of Theopetrain Kalabaka, and up until now is the only prehistoric site in Greece with findingsfrom all these periods of civilization. During the Bronze Age, Thessalia becamethe birthplace of the first Greek race and experienced significant developmentduring Mycenean times, while in 197 B.C., the area was seized by the Romans.During Byzantine times, Thessalia was part of the province of Greece, Larissabeing the capital; the Despotate of Thessalia was established upon the formationof the Nicean Empire in 1246. The Thessalians fought for the emancipation ofthe region from the Turks throughout the 19th century, and during World War II,their contribution to the battle against the German occupancy was significant.It is worthwhile to note that Georgios Karaiskakis, the hero of the War ofIndependence of 1821, was a native of Mavromati, Karditsa, and one can visitthe cave he was born in. Moreover, Nikolaos Plastiras, a native of Morfovouni,Karditsa, was a notable figure in modern Greek history, who envisioned the build-ing of the Tavropos dam, an idea that ended up in the creation of an artificiallake which bears his name.
