HMSBellona1760–ChrisCarl

HMS Bellonawas a 74-gun Bellona-class third-rate ship of the line of theRoyalNavy. Designed by Sir Thomas Slade, shewas a prototype for the iconic 74-gun shipsof the latter part of the 18th century. Herparticulars were: Tons burthen: 1615 bm;Length: 168 ft (gundeck), 138 ft (keel);Beam:46ft11in;Draught:21ft6 in;depthofhold:19ft9in:Complement:650officersand men; Armament; Lower gundeck: 28 X32 pounders; Upper gundeck: 28 X 18pounders; QD; 14 X 9 pounders; Fc: 4 X 9pounders.

A spar torpedo is a weaponconsistingofabombplacedat theendofalongpole, orspar, andattachedtotheboat.Theweapon is used by running the end ofthe spar into the enemy ship. Spartorpedoes were often equipped with abarbedspearattheend, soitwouldsticktowoodenhulls. Afusecouldthenbeusedtodetonate it. E. C. Singer invented the spartorpedo during the American Civil War, aprivate engineer who worked on secret

projects for the benefit of the Confederate States of America. Singer’s torpedo wasdetonatedbymeansofa triggermechanismadapted froma rifle lock. Thespring-loadedtrigger was detonated by means of a long cord attached to the attacking vessel. Theattacking vessel rammed its target, embedding the barbed torpedo in its hull, and thenbacked off. When the attacker reached the limit of the trigger cord, the torpedo wasdetonated. Unlike ample Civil War Union Picket Boat coverage, researching historicinformation on Confederate Picket Boats rendered nothing useable from the internet orBob’sCivilWarenthusiastfriends. Don brought in a little model of acoastal cannon made from an ArtesaniaLatinakitthatheobtainedfromayardsalefor$10.00.Donindicatedthatthekitwasafun project that was relatively simple tobuild and provided a “break” from thelarger and more complicated ship modelkits. In a similar vane, Don also obtainedanother Artesania Latina cannon kit whileattending the NRG Conference in Floridalast year – a 24 lb. Naval cannon – whichwill also be another “easy build” in thefuture. The cannon kits are fun little kits, inexpensive, andcanbebuiltratherquickly.

The Essex class was a class ofaircraft carriers of the United States Navythat constituted the 20th century’s mostnumerous class of capital ships. The classconsisted of 24 vessels, which came in“short-hull” and “long-hull” versions.Thirty-two ships were originally ordered, butasWorldWar IIwounddown, sixwerecancelledbeforeconstructionandtwowerecancelledafterconstructionhadbegun.
