3rd SUNDAY OF LUKE (Gal 1: 11-19) October 10th 2010
It is with great pain that the Apostle Paul writes his letter to the
Churche which he founded through the grace of God. He witnessed
the newly-enlightened being carried away easily and veering of the
road to salvation and so tears of pain welled up in his eyes. When he
received news of their spiritual troubles, he would fall to his knees and
with fervent prayers he would ask the Lord to support their Christian
faith and grant them guidance. For the spread of the Lords Gospel
Paul suffered a great deal. Even though he bore the physical pain of
his wounds, the insults, the terrible persecutions, ridicule, and
floggings; it was the pain caused by the spiritual loss of the Christians
that caused him to suffer unimaginably.

This is a letter written with such deep spiritual pain, it was also written
while Paul was imprisoned in Rome and was addressed to the Church
in Galatia. It is with much love brethren, and also with much effort and
great persistence that I preach the Gospel of the Kingdom of God to
you. These things that I teach you, I have not learned from another
man, but from Christ Himself, therefore there can be absolutely no
doubt about their authenticity. With these words we begin the Epistle
reading in our Churches today. The aim of the Apostle is to draw our
attention, so that we place the proper importance on his public
confession. He was prepared to reveal all of the dark secrets of his
previous life to the public. They needed to know the past as it actually
occurred, and not as the fanatical Jewish Christians were spreading in
all directions and especially towards the Galatians.
The Galatians had learnt the Christian faith from the Apostle Paul, and
they had believed in Christs Gospel through his preaching. Their
Church was indeed founded by Paul, but with the unbreakable
foundation that is Christ. In their hearts the Galatians were able to
clearly perceive this. The Apostle Paul did not leave any of their
questions unanswered; the Galatians had no doubts and had fully
believed and loved Paul. What happened then? How were so many
doubts about Pauls apostleship created in the minds of the Galatians?
Why did they place their spiritual Father in such a difficult position?
This was done by the fanatical Jewish-Christians, and what was it that
these people spread? To explain this we will use contemporary

language and terminology so that everybody will understand what was
said in order to change the minds and the feelings of the Galatians. In
past homilies false-brethren have been referred to, these were the
people who held onto the circumcision and the letter of the law, and
believed that without this salvation did not exist. It is these same
fanatics who were able to persuade the Galatians that Paul was still
Saul; the one who persecuted the Christians, and spread fear and
horror where ever he went. They also said that Paul was not an
Apostle, that he was not one of the twelve and that he had no authority
to teach anything other than the Mosaic Law.
The Galatians, despite having Paul in high regard and respect, listened
to these words, and slowly-slowly began to change their opinion. Paul
found himself in prison, suffering for the truth of the Gospel, when he
found out about the way that members of the Galatian Church had
betrayed him, and so immediately began to write a letter to them.
Today a part of this letter is read in our Holy Churches, it is the part of
the letter where Paul makes his public confession. He clearly states
for the Galatians and every generation of the faithful up to today, who
he was before meeting Christ and what he became through knowing
Christ. He was not embarrassed to confess publicly the truth and to
allow the people to make their own conclusions.
We hear him say to the Galatians today: you have been informed by
these false-brethren, that I was indeed a terrifying persecutor of

Christians and the Gospel of Christ, you know that I spread terror
amongst every class of Christian. You know that I had no friendships
and that I had nothing to do with the twelve Apostles, except for Peter
for 15 days and for a short time with James the Brother of Christ. You
know all of these things that they have told you with such fanaticism.
You know that I was not taught about Christianity and about the eternal
life and salvation. It is necessary for me to tell you these things, since I
now find myself imprisoned for the sake of our Lord, while these false-
brethren who do not suffer at all tell you these things with a deceitful
and cunning aim.
I will therefore not focus on the things that you already know, but rather
on those that you do not. Christ Himself appeared to me, I saw Him
with my own two eyes, He spoke to me personally, and I heard Him
with my own ears. He sent me to preach His Gospel to the Nations.
He informed me of His mission of Salvation, and He enlightened me
with the Holy Spirit so that I would be able to properly guide the people
who have accepted the truth of his Gospel.
So for this reason dear brethren it is important that we love and take
care of our shepherds, the ones who are constantly at the bastions of
their spiritual mission for our spiritual protection and progress. We
should never become the cause of embitterment for them, but rather
we should offer them joy and peace.

write a few words every week from the basic catechism. In this way,
everyone can have reliable information about our Orthodox faith.
Creation: On the first day, God created light. On the secondday, He created the firmament and separated earth from sky.
On the third day, He separated the dry land from the sea and
created the vegetation of the earth. On the fourth day, He
created the sun, moon and stars. On the fifth day, He created
the fish and the birds. On the sixth day, He created animal andman. Before material creation, God created the angels and the
entire intelligible and invisible world. Afterwards, He created
the perceptible world and the entire physical creation and
finally, man. First, He created Adam and next, from his side,
Eve. Man comprises soul and body. Soul did not exist beforethe body nor the body before the soul, but man was created as
a whole. Man is the summary of all creation because he
consists of the intelligible and the perceptible. He is a
microcosm within the wider world. Paradise, where man was
placed when he was created, is perceptible and intelligible.
Perceptible, because it was a definite place and intelligible,
because man had the grace of God. That he was at one with
the grace of God is apparent from the fact that he was naked
yet did not feel naked.

Then God said,
"Let Us make man
in Our image,
according to Our
likeness; let themhave dominion
over the fish of
the sea, over the
birds of the air,
and over the
cattle, over all the
earth and overevery creeping thing that creeps on the earth."
So God created man in His own image; in the image
of God He created him; male and female He created
them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them,
"Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it;
have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds
of the air, and over every living thing that moves on
the earth."
And God said, "See, I have given you every herb that
yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and
every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be
for food. Also, to every beast of the earth, to every
bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on theearth, in which there is life, I have given every green
herb for food"; and it was so.
Then God saw everything that He had made, and
indeed it was very good. So the evening and the
morning were the sixth day.
