article on Shell In ternat ional Research's new fundamental research laboratory a t Birlinghoven Castle in West Germany which appeared in the July 1964 issue of ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY (page 93 A) it was reported t ha t Shell had developed an automatic instrument for the determination of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen. Because of the widespread interest in this development, Shell In ternat ional Research has supplied us with the following additional information:
The process of the explosion-like combustion in helium with only 2 - 3 % oxygen as well as the separation and quant i ta t ive determination of the combustion gases were developed by W. Walisch [Chem. Ber. 94, 2314 (1961)] . Shell In te rnational Research has subsequently further automatized this method, so t h a t the percentages of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen are printed out within 8 minutes.
The only manipulat ions to be carried out are :
(1) Weighing in of 0.3-1 mg. samples. (2) Introduction of the combustion boat into the combustion tube. (3) Adjustment of a digidial to the numerical value of the weighing. (4) Pressing of a but ton to s ta r t the combustion cycle.
The entire electronic equipment for the integration of peak areas and conversion into percentage composition can be assembled from commercially available components. The design of this apparatus was described in detail by Hors t Wei tkamp and Friedhelm Korte [Chemie-Ingenieur-Technik 35, 429 (1963)]. Since then, a few changes were found desirable in order to analyze for substances which either are resistant to combustion or are

CALIBRATION OF GERMANIUM RESISTANCE THERMOMETERS
The Nat ional Bureau of Standards Inst i tute for Basic Standards is now accepting germanium resistance thermometers for calibration over the range 2° to 5° K. Germanium resistors submitted for this sendee will be compared with N B S germanium resistance thermometers of high sensitivity t ha t have been calibrated with reference to the 1958 He 4 scale of temperatures . ADDENDUM TO THE APRIL 1964 REPORT FOR ANALYTICAL CHEMISTS
The following addendum to "The Role of the Electroanalyt ical Chemist in Biochemical Research," which appeared as a Repor t for Analytical Chemists [ANAL. C H E M . 36, No. 4, 29 A (1964)] has been submit ted:
The original work on the role of chromium ( I I I ) in diabetes was begun in 1959 by Dr . Wal ter Mertz. The polarographic study of the interaction of chromium ( I I I ) , insulin, and mitochondrial membranes was an independent confirmation of a mechanism originally proposed by Dr . Mertz. He will publish the results of clinical studies on diabetes when all of the da ta is avai l able.
The chromium levels in certain organs of the body have been measured and statistical da ta suggest t ha t for the Philippine people, the blood chromium levels are elevated.

Spectrophor I
ELECTROPHORESIS SYSTEM B&L proudly introduces a revolutionary new advancement in electrophoresis . . . the SPECTROPHOR I.
• Completely eliminates staining. • Uses highly sensitive peptide bond ab-
sorbance at 205 πιμ. A UV-Visible Spectrophotometer is part of the system, enabling you to work a t 340 πιμ, 410 πιμ, or any wavelength in the range 205 Γημ-650 πιμ. Employs a new, vastly improved agar technique.
For the first time, 8 samples may be migrated and measured in 90 minutes, reliably and conveniently. Repeatable within 2 % . SPECTROPHOR I . . . t ruly the ult imate in a fully integrated electrophoresis system housed in a superbly designed cabinet with console controls .
