From the President’s Desk

Hello SORORS !

It has been an amazing two years. Thank you for the honor of serving as your president. I

tell everyone, even when they don’t ask, that I’ve had fun! I’ve learned a lot about Delta,

DAC, and myself. I am grateful for the opportunity to meet sorors I did not know and I got to

know many of you much better. I am excited for the reclaimed sorors and the new sorors

(T29). Our chapter is growing in numbers and community impact.

I appreciate your patience to let me grow in this leadership role, your forgiveness for my

mistakes, your counsel when needed, and the latitude to try new things.

Thank you for your dedication, ideas, and hard work that lead to creative, innovative and

powerful programs. Delta Proud!

I had the privilege of working with an amazing leadership team. Their love and passion for

Delta and DAC is inspirational.

Best wishes to Soror Browner and the new administration. I am here to serve.

All of my Love…

Yours in Service,

Sherrè

From the OFFICE of the First

Vice President

Greetings Sorors!

Where did the time go? I can’t believe we have reached the end of the sorority year.

First, I want to thank Joyce Willis and Teri Wilkerson for the chairman-ship of the Gospel Jazz Brunch. There was singing, praise dancing, spoken word, a pianist and a saxophonist. Every single act served as a compliment to the event. Extraordinary! Thanks to the Committee for a job well done.

I look forward to continuing this Delta journey with my sisters. I pray that we enjoy a blessed summer that brings us back refreshed, renewed, and ready to continue the work of Delta!

Last, but not least, I’ll see you in Las Vegas, the home of our 53rd Na-tional Convention.

Nothing, but Delta Love,

Kim

A WORD FROM OUR 2nd VICE

Greetings, sorors! I can’t believe it’s been two years since I took on the task of being your 2nd Vice President. I had NO IDEA at the time of what I was getting myself into – the information we would learn, the challenges we would face, the work that would be done. For all that we accomplished together, there is SO much more to be done. We could never have guessed two year ago that we would live in a country that is as divided as ever. We didn’t know that the need for us to be actively engaged in service and social action would increase exponentially. Even as this term ends, my commitment to service and action does not. It is my hope that we will continue to incorporate service and action into all of our chapter programs and pro-jects – including those we traditionally think of as social or membership. We never want to miss an opportunity to serve and impact our community through meaningful social action. I extend my most sincere appreciation to the chairs, co-chairs, vice chairs and members of our social program and action committees. You are the heart of our chapter. Your work to inform, educate and challenge our broader community is priceless. You are our Delta Force! Enjoy your summer, sorors. But please, if you find yourself thinking of some really creative way to reclaim sorors and engage them in our work, let me know! I’ll be thinking too, and I’ll be reaching out to you for help. I look forward to what we’ll do next! I appreciate you and I love you. Your sis, Nan-c M.

Page 9: The Crimson Times...Dresses, Skirts/Dress Pants/Blouses Blazers - similar to a sorority blazer - crest and letters, small lettering above the heart is permitted Business Sweaters,

Sorors, it has been an honor to serve as your Corresponding Secretary. I learned a great deal, but

most importantly, I got to know each of you just a bit more. As I suspected, each one of you is a

unique jewel. I wish our capable, proven, and delightful Soror Carin Boyd, the absolute best as she

takes on this important role!

I remind you that you can truly assist her efforts by keeping your contact information current on the

national website. Each month data is pulled directly from the website to facilitate timely delivery of

information to each chapter member. Examples of information that is routinely distributed include

minutes, newsletter, and Dayton Alumnae Chapter (DAC) email blasts.

Greetings, Dayton Alumnae Sorors!!!

The Healthy Lifestyles & Think BIG Committees

Invite you to continue your self-care this summer!

While summer may be a time to take a break from some things, please remain commit-

ted to caring for your physical, mental, and spiritual needs throughout these

months. You will be better prepared to resume autumn activities if you give sufficient

focus to your own wellness during the summer.

June Tips

Schedule pleasurable activities the same way you would schedule a meeting or an-

other important appointment. Invite a friend or loved one to join you, as spending

time with trusted others makes the activity more meaningful—and you are more

likely to follow through when someone else is expecting you to show up.

Work to challenge negative thinking, as it leads to unpleasant emotions, such as de-

pression, anger, and anxiety. Replace negative thoughts with more positive and re-

alistic perspectives. Speak life into your own situation!

Keep up your physical exercise even when it gets too hot outside by walking or

swimming indoors.

Be safe as you enjoy the warm outdoor activities by using sunscreen, dressing in

lightweight clothing, and protecting your eyes with sunglasses. Also, prevent dehy-

dration by drinking plenty of water.

As you enjoy cooking out, choose extra lean beef

or even tuna or salmon, which are rich in omega-

3 fatty acids. While you’re at it, fill your plate

with grilled veggies.

Happy summer!

FINANCIAL FORTITUDE CORNER

Seven Magic Words and a Couple of Other Things

First, summer is a time when consumer spending can go through the roof! There are vaca-

tions to plan, home maintenance projects like concrete work or a new garage door, and per-

haps a new vehicle. Therefore, we would like to remind you of seven magic words that might

help keep more dollars in your pocket as you contemplate large expenditures.

After the sales person has given you his sales pitch and has thrown out what he considers to

be a good price, your response should be – after hesitating just a bit – “Is that the best you

can do?” You may be surprised at what the salesperson’s response may be. He may come

down in price or throw in an additional product or service to sweeten the pot. Either way, you

are better off than you were before asking the question.

Second, the Financial Fortitude Committee will once again spearhead the “Donate Your Year

for our Debs” campaign. We will begin collecting contributions at Round-up and finish at our

December sorority meeting.

Third, please mark your calendar for the next Financial Fortitude workshop on Saturday, No-

vember 4, 2017. Stay tuned for further details.

Finally, have a great summer and, as always, remember, “If you take of the pennies…”

Linda Nervis and the Financial Fortitude Committee

Delta Emergency Response Team:

Always Be Prepared

Summer Safety Tips

Stay out of cold water. Favorite swimming spots can still be cold in early summer months. Temperatures fluctuate from day to day in many inland lakes. Resist the urge to swim until water temperatures rise above 70 degrees.

Watch out for heat stroke. Know how to identify heat stroke. Limit your exposure to high temperatures and take breaks by going indoors to rest in air conditioning. Try finding a shady spot and be sure children have adequate rest and hydration after play.

Drink water, not a diet cola. You cannot stay properly hydrated on Diet Coke or alcoholic beverages. Drink lots of water if you are going to be in the heat. If you experience dizzi-ness or light headedness, find a cool shady spot, sit down, and drink more water. Know your prescriptions. Many prescription drugs can trigger increased sensitivity to sunburn. Read labels carefully on any medication you are taking before going out in the sun.

Wait before you take a bite out of that peach! Take the time to wash any fruits or vegeta-bles purchased at local farmers markets. It is likely these items have not been washed and may have dirt or bacteria lingering.

Don’t leave kids alone in the car. This warning is simple and very serious. Do not leave your children unattended in your vehicle for any period of time. Within 10 minutes the temperature inside a vehicle rises by 20 degrees and by 40 degrees in an hour. If you see a child alone in a vehicle, call 911. Be a water watcher. Whether your children are in a backyard swimming pool, at a com-munity center or swimming in a lake, always watch them. Swimming pools are the most common site for drowning among children 4 and under.

Pick out the right shades. Bring along a pair of sunglasses that provide adequate UV pro-tection. Most brands come with labels stating if they are effective against the sun’s harmful rays. Grab your kids a colorful and fun pair too.

Always assume the fire is hot. A good rule of thumb is to stay away from a fire pit for 24 hours after use. Coals don’t have to be glowing red to be hot and dangerous.
