The lesson begins with a brainstorming activity asking the students to say as many words related to TEAM SPORTS they can come up with.Expected answers Softball ,football, hockey, basketball, cricket, volleyball, water polo etc.The T asks the question :What is your favourite team sport? Why? Elicit answers, encourage whole class participation. Now let’s talk about a team sport you all know very well ..FOOTBALL!!

NEXT QUESTION WOULD BE …What’s your favourite team?

Scenario: Imagine you are at a football stadium watching your favourite team playing.

It’s the beginning of the match. Nobody has scored. How do you feel? You don’t know what is going to happen… so you feel…… nervous, anxious, worried….

How do you feel when your team scores a goal or wins the match?

Happy, excited, cheerful, enthusiastic, thrilled

Now imagine your team loses. How do you feel?

Angry, sad, disappointed, upset, frustrated.

How do you behave towards the supporters of the other team? Do you cheer them? Are you happy for them? Do you congratulate them? Expected answers:Shout , use bad language (foul language) , fight, hit, punch, damage property(there is vandalism, hooliganism).

Watch this short film and write down how it makes you feel. Mention 3 things.Really proud, happy, fascinated, thrilled, excited, enthusiastic.Teacher says:You said that you support different teams but it seems that you all (as well as all the thousands of people who watched these football matches) feel the same. We all feel proud when our National team wins. So sport does not only have the power to…… divide but it also……brings us together / unites. Then the students read a newspaper article which appeared on Facebook on Greece’s Triumph in the Euro 2004 championship. Students are asked to work individually and then compare their answers in pairs.

The teacher checks the Ss’ answers (the Ss need to justify their answers for the T/F exercise).

It is advisable to check the answers of the Vocabulary exercise first before the Ss proceed to do the T/F exercise.

Then the teacher gives out a handout with proverbs and sayings and asks Ss to say what they have in common with the Facebook article they have just read.

Finally, the teacher brainstorms the writing activity and invites Ss to offer ideas as to what the e-mail should contain.

The teacher writes notes on the Bb.

On July the 4th 2004, the Greek National Team won the European Cup in the greatest upset in sport history. They beat host country Portugal 1-0 (half time 0-0) in the final of the Euro 2004 soccer championship which was played at Lisbon’s Da Luz stadium on Sunday night. Angelos Charisteas scored with a header in the 57th minute following a corner kick by Angelos Basinas. It is the first time in its history that the Greek National Team wins a final in an International soccer championship. Greece, who few believed would even make it to the quarter finals, had also beaten Portugal 2-1 in the opening match of the competition on June 12th. Otto Rehhagel, their German coach is partly responsible for Greece’s spectacular performance. Speaking at a press conference, Rehhagel said that: “It was an unusual success for Greek football and particularly European football. Our team played fantastic football. Our opponents were better than us, but we triumphed. We wrote history.” Da Luz stadium shook with the excitement of Greek fans shouting with happiness as Otto Rehhagel’s ‘Lions’ lifted up the Cup. Greeks all over the world ran into the streets, waving Greek flags and the night sky was lit up by fireworks. A smiling Karamanlis, speaking to TV camera crews in Lisbon after the final, expressed great pride in the players’ achievements, saying that they had given great joy to Greeks in every corner of the world. Former Prime Minister Kostas Simitis said the National Team players “set an example on how battles are won, and congratulated them on their “strength of character and team work”. Athens Mayor Dora Bakoyiannis said ‘this is a unique moment for all of Greece; it is a moment we cannot describe in words. It is a lesson on what we Greeks can do when we truly believe in something. We have shown the world that when we are united, have self-confidence, and dynamism anything is possible. We have triumphed against all odds.” Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Christodoulos, welcoming the Greek team and its coach said: “what you see here tonight is all Greeks united, no matter what political beliefs they have or which football teams they support. We have not seen this for many years. We are grateful to you.” Since last night Greece has been at the lips of the world. The triumph of the Greek National Team is indeed a great celebration for all Greeks. posted on Tuesday 06/07/2004 · Like · · Share · Subscribe
