As a chemical intermediate, pentamethylene gly­col opens the door to a wealth of new organic compounds. Linear and cyclic esters and poly­esters are readily obtained by reaction with various acylating agents. A new class of high molecular weight linear polymers can be produced by heating with alkyl formais. Dehydration and oxidation yield tetrahydropyran and glutaric acid, re­spectively.

Esters and Polyesters of pentamethylene glycol are valuable plasticizers for certain types of resins and may find applications in the textile industry as plasticizers for fibers such as cotton, rayon, wool, mohair, silk and nylon, increasing their elasticity and flexibility. Cyclic esters may be useful in the preparation of perfumes.
