Introduction The Omega MCU Systems JDM is a simple serial programming interface for PIC microcontrollers. The name JDM is in reference to Jens Dyekjar Madsen who was the first to devise a programmer of this type. It has been tested with both PICPgm and WinPic software and will program a large number of PIC microcontrollers that tolerate 13.3V Vpp. OMS JDM main features:

• 1.6mm FR4 fiberglass board with 1oz copper and HAL tinning for long life

• Industry standard RS232 interface.

• DB9F for use with straight-through serial cables.

• Compact

• Requires no power supply

• Low cost

• Simple to use

Usage 1. Connecting to the Host Computer The OMS JDM is equipped with a standard pin-out 9 pin DBF connector that connects to a host computer through a standard RS232 interface. It should be noted that, due to the low voltages employed, the OMS JDM will generally not work with USB to Serial adapters or cables.

The OMS JDM is configured as a data communications device so when connecting to an RS232 interface, a straight-through cable is required. Depending on which RS232 connector the host computer has, this will either be a 9-pin female to 9-pin male, as shown here. Or, in rare instances, you may need a 25-pin female to a 9-pin male cable. In either case, the 9-pin male end of the cable is

connected to the OMS JDM and the female end to the host computer.

2. Connecting to Your PIC The OMS JDM is not intended as a full in circuit serial programmer. It only produces enough power to adequately power the PIC chip by itself. Ideally, you should arrange to have the PIC placed in a board specifically designed for programming or development with PIC chips. In such cases, make sure the power, if any, is disconnected and that the board is not connected to anything except the JDM programmer, as shown to the right. Having said that, it may still work well in a standard ICSP role, as long as the PIC’s power, Vpp and programming pins are or can be effectively isolated from the rest of the circuit.

Alternatively a solderless breadboard can be utilized. While it is preferable to have a zero insertion force socket to reduce wear and tear on the PIC, using a solderless breadboard is a perfect way to make sure that there is no parasitic power drain on the JDM programmer or the PIC. In either case you should attach the programmer using appropriate jumpers that are as short as practical. 15cm-25cm is an ideal length range. See Table 1 for the OMS JDM pin-out.

As previously mentioned, the OMS JDM has been tested with both WinPic and PICPgm software. Both of these can be had for free. PICPgm can be downloaded from http://picpgm.picprojects.net/software.html and WinPic can be found at http://www.qsl.net/dl4yhf/winpicpr.html. PICPgm will auto-detect the OMS JDM. To use the OMS JDM with WinPic, set the Interface Type on the Interface tab to “JDM (2) for serial port”. Make sure you also select the com port that you connected the OMS JDM on. Refer to the screenshot below.

PICpgm is very nice little program and still actively maintained. It also has the best device support. While WinPic is easy to use and useful software, it has not undergone any new development since 2009. Also, the author has officially stopped supporting it. Other software also supports JDM type programmers. IC-Prog, WinPic800 and others claim to include support for JDM type programmers, however the OMS JDM has not been tested with these. PonyProg claims JDM support, but does not seem to work with any JDM programmer, including the OMS JDM. Device Support Although device support is heavily influenced by the software you use, the OMS JDM programmer will support most PIC microcontrollers that use a 13V-13.5V programming voltage.
