BEYOND THE FLYLEAF An Introduction to Scientific Research.
Ε, B . W I L S O N . xiii + 375 pages . McGraw-Hill Book Co., Inc., 330 West 42nd St., New York 3 6 , Ν . Υ. 1952. $6.00. Reviewed b y N A T H A N L. DRAKE, University of Maryland.
T H I S text i s "an at tempt to collect in one place and t o explain as simply as possible a number o f general principles, techniques, and guides for procedure which successful investigators in various fields of science have found helpful."
The chapter headings give an excellent picture of the scope of the work. They are: T h e Choice and Statement of a Re-search. Problem; Searching the Literature; Elementary Scientific Method; The Design of Experiments; Classification, Sampling and Measurement; The Analysis of Experimental Data; Errors of Measurement; Probability, Randomness a n d Logic; Mathematical Work; Numerical Computations; and Reporting t h e Results of Research. A section on "notes and refer-•ences" concludes each of the chapters except the first and last. Derivations so lengthy t h a t they would destroy the continuity of the text, and leading references thus follow t he subject matter to which they refer. T h e sections dealing wi th the design of apparatus, the analysis of expcri-
indispensable information for agriculturists, chemists, all users of
starch products
STARCH Its sources, production a n d uses
By CHARLES A. B R A U T L E C H T Chemical and Industrial Consultant
Professor Emeritust University of Maine Here in one handy illustrated volume is all the basic information on the sources, technology and uses of starch.
Major emphasis has been placed on white potato starch.—its characteristics, specifications, methods of analysis, uses, and the economics of various plant materials. Full information is also included on other starch sources such as sweet potatoes, corn, tapioca, wheat and rice. Latest processes and equipment in all types of starch production are fully detailed. 1953 400 pages lllus. $10.00

mental data , and errors of measurement are considerably more extensive than t h e others and are very well done. Numbering of sections makes finding cross references easy.
T h e author stresses t he broad application of the principle under discussion; a specific example is frequently used to drive home a point, b u t principal emphasis is upon the applicability of t h e principle to many fields of scientific endeavor.
The mathematics used is not unduly complex; one section or another of the mathematical discussions may b e unfamiliar to a scientist operat ing in a particular field, bu t the t reatment is sufficiently elementary, and the notes are sufficiently extensive, so that he should have no difficulty in using the principles discussed.
Intended primarily for graduate students about to begin a career of research, t he book could be read profitably b y any re search scientist. Here t he novice will find a well-ordered discussion of guiding principles. T h e experienced man will b e familiar with most, if not all, of these principles, bu t it is of advantage for him to have a discussion of them available in a reasonably small volume for ready reference. T h e pa th of the research scientist is strewn with pitfalls; t he book under discussion should be a great he lp to any scientist in avoiding these hazards. Typography and binding are excellent.
Neutron Cross Sections, A Compilation of the AEC Neutron Cross Sections. AECU 2040. Office of Technical Services, Depar tment of Commerce, Washington 25 , D . C. $1.00. Reviewed by I. P E R L M A N , University of California.
T H I S compilation, mainly in the form of graphs, presents a critical evaluation of neutron cross section data b y a group of authorities in the field. T h e bulk of the volume is taken up with total cross sections of the elements, and da ta are available over a surprisingly w i d e neutron energy range; in some instances complete curves are shown from ~0.01 e.v. to 100 m.e.v. Most of the information shown consists of atomic cross sections since data on separated isotopes are sparse.
Irregularly throughout t h e table will be found curves for t h e radiative capture reaction and for others such as (n , p ) , (n, α ) , and fission. A complete table of known activation cross sections for thermal neutrons is given and can b e used to calculate yields of radioactivities produced with thermal neutrons. Tota l absorption cross sections and scattering cross sections are also listed in this table.
In bringing together and attempting to reconcile all experimental information on the subject, the compilers of this volume have pe r fo rmed a real service. The large
amount of information t h a t bas grown u p in t he past few years is impressive when brought together, bu t the compilation also serves to outline t he m a n y gaps in our knowledge.

. Key to Chelation Chelation (pronounced "Key-lat ion") is the new chemistry that may prove to be the key to your own chemical problem. Chelation gives you mole-for-mole control over contaminating cations in solution. By grasping and binding these offending contaminants into strong chelate structures, Versene ( the most powerful Chelating Agent known) , prevents them from interfering with the normal reaction involved.
The Versenes are chemistry's most precise chemicals. Extremely stable a t elevated temperatures throughout the p H range, they are made only under patents originated, developed a n d op erated by F. C. Bersworth. Qua l i ty and uniformity of complexing power are guaranteed by gram o r car load. Wr i t e Dept. A for sample and Technical Bulletin No . 2.
