Now, for the first t ime, methyial (dimethoxy-methane) is ava i l ab le in quantit ies which justify large scale experimentation a n d pi lot p lan t development. Celanese' pure methyial holds promise of extensive appl icat ion in processes that require a low bo i l ing , extremely high power solvent.
As a solvent for plastics and other organic compounds, methyia l is superior to ether and acetone in many respec ts -its relat ively high water solubility and abi l i ty to be salted out of solution are characteristics of specific value. Its low boi l ing point (42°C) a n d stabi l i ty toward alkalies points to its value as a vapor iz ing, extract ion or reaction solvent.
