26 A ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY external to the ionization chamber, there is no problem in- volved with outgassing the magnets or removing stray iron particles; and, finally, the tube is automatically self-cleaning because it rids itself of deposited film when operated at the higher pressures in the lowest sensitivity range. 18 Vitamin Ε Ester Heretofore, pure tocopheryl esters have been available commercially in racemic synthetic mixtures but never in pure d-form. Distillation Products Industries has taken vitamin production one step further with its latest product: pure, crystallized d-a-tocopheryl acetate, an esterified form of vitamin E. Rat antisterility bioassays show that the new product is a very potent vitamin E. It is called Type 6-100 and is pre- pared from vegetable oil as a fine crystalline material which melts to a light yellow oil at room temperature. 19 Mercury Receivers Chemiquip Co. has designed a mercury trap which may be installed at both ends of a differential manometer and at the open end of absolute manometers to catch mercury blown from the manometer at normal operating pressures. The capacity of the moly steel Mercureceiver is 110 ml.; that of the stainless steel unit is 125 ml. Each is made with threaded end fittings and porous stainless steel membranes, the flow capacity of which are adjusted to control mercury at a rate proportional to the pressure differential across the porous element. The container may be equipped with membranes having maximum pore diameters from 0.005 to 0.00035 in. The 0.0006-in. pore diameter membrane is capable of pre- venting passage of mercury at pressures under 17 lb./sq. in. When mercury is present in the container, the manometer will not return to zero, preventing incorrect readings. 20 MANUFACTURERS' LITERATURE Vegetable Oleic Acid.
