LETTERS W h y a Bonus for Professional M o n t DEAR SIR:

Re the article "Reserve Plan Falters Again," C&EN for June 27, page 2711: As the article points out, dentists, physicians, and veterinarians receive $100 per month as incentive bonus pay. I would assume that the purpose of this extra pay is to induce young professional men to enter into the service of their own accord. If this scheme has succeeded in attracting men into the service, then it should be continued and possibly used by other professions.

However, if the record shows that the bonus is not attracting a sizable number of men, it should be abandoned. I can't conceive of any all-inclusive reason why "drafted" dentists, physicians, and veterinarians, who will at least be working in their profession while in the Army, should receive a bonus.

I do not wish to see the ACS become a lobbying group for the special interests of a few of its members unless some good accrues to the Army's permanent scientific personnel.

GEORGE C. KRUSEN II Riviera Beach, Md.

EDITOR'S N O T E : The Congression-ally granted charter which the ACS holds prevents the ACS from lobbying for or against any specific legislation. Its charter, however, does require that it present its views and proposals to Congress whenever requested to do so by a committee of Congress.

The views expressed by E. H. Vol-wiler in a statement submitted to the Senate were similar to those expressed by him in an earlier appearance before the House Armed Services Committee where he appeared at committee invitation. Views expressed were those of the ACS Board of Directors.

The editors have interpreted the ACS Board's statement to mean that the arguments in favor of a bonus for doctors, dentists, and veterinarians hold equally well for chemists and other scientists. The statement did not discuss the merits of a bonus.

Helpful Hint DEAR SIR:

Coffee-in-the-laboratory is an accepted practice among chemists. After having been opened, however, a can of ground coffee rapidly loses flavor. That loss may be delayed by wrapping a length of Scotch tape around the opening. By folding the outer end of the tape under itself, we make a handle so that the same length may be reused many times.

Hope you have better-flavored coffee.
