IntroductionThe teacher tells the pupils that today’s class will be divided into two parts. In the first part they will be learning new language and in the second one they will be applying their knowledge by creating interactive presentations.

MotivationThe teacher shows the pupils PowerPoint presentation slide filled with images of various insects and asks the students what they see and if they recognize any of the insects shown. The pupils identify some of the species of insects and we elicit names for the species they don’t know in their mother tongue.

Main partThe teacher instructs the pupils to open PowerPoint presentations that are copied to their computers. The pupils’ task is to match the English names of the species of insects and their Croatian translations to the images of insects using Internet dictionaries. We then check the exercise in a way that the volunteers come to the teacher’s computer and match the images of insects to their names.

Teacher asks the pupils what are their thoughts on insects and if they consider them good or bad and asked to give reasons for their opinion in order to elicit a discussion and practice new vocabulary. Pupils express their opinion on various species of insects by raising their hand and giving arguments.

The teacher instructs pupils to do one more exercise in their

PowerPoint presentations. Their task is to read a short text about the anatomy of insects and to fill in the blanks with the correct names of the parts of an insect. We then check the exercise in a way that the volunteers come to the teacher’s computer and fill in the blanks.

After that, the teacher instructs the students to register on glogster.com, a cloud-based platform for presentation and active learning, on which they will create multimedia posters, the so-called glogs, in teams. Once the team finishes their glog, they will give a presentation about their topic to the rest of the class.

The teacher then gives instructions and explains the tasks. The first team is given the topic Insects: The most successful animals on Earth. They are given specific instructions, including the list of questions they have to answer, such as How many insects are there in the world?, How do they protect themselves from predators? and so on and the links to webpages on which they will find information about their topic.

The second team is given the topic Insects as pests. They are also given specific instructions, including the list of questions they have to answer, such as What is the definition of “pest”?, Are there many species of insects that fit in the definition of pests?, and so on and the links to webpages on which they will find information about their topic.

The third team is given the topic Insects: Making the life on Earth possible. They are also given specific instructions, including the list of questions they have to answer, such as What are some useful products of beneficial insects?, How was honey regarded in ancient civilizations? and so on, and the links to webpages on which they will find information about their topic.

The fourth team is given the topic Cockroaches – The Ultimate Survivors. They are also given specific instructions, including the list of questions they have to answer, such as How long have cockroaches been inhabiting the Earth?, How long can they survive without food and water?, and so on, and the links to webpages on which they will find information about their topic.

The pupils work on their presentations.

When the teams finish their glogs, they present them to the rest of the class, one by one, and answer questions the other students ask them. They can choose a team leader to do it, or they can do it in pairs. After they present their work to the rest of the class, they upload their glogs to the 7th and 8th graders’ Facebook group so the other students can see what they did.
