Message from the Editorial Team

Building on its business model that focuses on transparency and long-term value, National Bank of Greece was named, for the second year running, the company with the “Best Corporate Governance – Greece” by Capital Finance International (CFI.co), in recognition of the Bank’s endeavours to maintain a strong and healthy corporate governance framework.

The Bank has always sought to function in a spirit of responsibility and with integrity, and this includes of course respect for its workforce and people, and tangible recognition of the key role played by staff in the branch network. As a consequence, the Bank rewarded its staff for sales of i-bank POS with a three-day trip to Venice, while likewise Ethniki Insurance rewarded its staff for car insurance sales in the second half of 2016 with a trip to Saint Petersburg in Russia. In addition, NBG’s i-bank platform gained no less than six prizes at this year’s Mobile Excellence Awards.

The Bank also attaches particular importance to cultivating its customer-oriented focus. In this regard, NBG participated in National Customer Service Week organized by the Hellenic Institute for Customer Service. This reflects the Bank’s stance toward the community in which it operates, the economy more generally, and the business community, which it has supported throughout the years, as stated last September at the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair. Support for business activity is a key pillar of NBG’s strategy, which is currently seeking to enhance collaboration with new, innovative and creative fintech firms. Against this backdrop NBG takes on competition, upgrading its products and services on an ongoing ba-sis, and thereby succeeding in remaining –through constant improvements and adjustments– a flexible organization within today’s banking system, as well as a bank in which Greek society has absolute trust. We wish all of you a Happy New Year!

For the second consecu-tive year, NBG was named "Best Corporate Governance - Greece" by Capital Finance Interna-tional (CFI.co). The activi-ties of CFI.co enjoy the support of international

bodies and organizations such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

For yet another year NBG participated in the 82nd TIF with China as the honored country. A key fea-ture of the 82nd TIF was the intense business fo-cus and emphasis on export activity, which in combination with the great number of the partici-pating exhibitors and the increased number of visitors, made it the biggest TIF of the past de-cade. On Saturday, 9 September the opening of the NBG Branch at the TIF venue was celebrated, with proceedings led by Mr. Takis Thomopoulos, Chairman of NBG, Mr. Leonidas Fragkiadakis, NBG CEO, and many senior NBG executives.

NBG's presence at TIF this year aimed at pro-moting the development of entrepreneurship, alternative payment networks, as well as its initia-tives to support the economy and society.

On Thursday 7 September, NBG Management, as every year, organized a gala dinner at Makedonia Palace, for its business clientèle in Northern Greece. Business representatives and customers visited our Branch during the opening ceremony, besides NBG's Board members and executives.

Acceptance of China UnionPay (CUP) cards by NBG's ATMs and POS

As part of its strategy to expand and enhance its payment card acceptance and settlement services, National Bank of Greece entered into an agreement with China UnionPay (CUP) in order to accept card transactions with this particular scheme. Set up in 2012, China UnionPay is the only Chi-nese card scheme that provides services to all Chinese Banks. It collaborates with nearly 400 domestic banks and has issued over 3 billion cards by end-2012, making it the lead card issuer throughout the world. By the end of 2012, the China UnionPay network provided services at 1.5 million ATMs, 10 million POS, and 8 million merchants. The same year, interbank transactions reached a total value of €3 trillion. At the end of 2012, UnionPay International was established (a subsidiary of China UnionPay) with a view to not only enhancing card acceptance but also enhancing the issue and use of UnionPay cards worldwide. UnionPay International ope- rates in 141 countries, and has a network of 3 million POS and 1 million ATMs, and its transaction volume amounts to some €50 billion. By the end of the same year, 27 countries and 97 banks had issued 17.7 million UnionPay cards.

The new service supports CUP card acceptance, compatible with magstripe and chip, at the NBG ATM network for making balance enquiries and cash withdrawals and purchases at the i-Bank POS terminals. At a later stage, the service will be broadened in order to support contactless transactions using the CUP cards, and it will expand to other providers collaborating with the Bank (Cardlink, Euronet and others) that clear card transactions.

This collaboration is of great importance for NBG, as Greece is a tourist destination for China UnionPay cardholders. In addition, this agree-ment will enable retailers and other businesses to further enhance their sales, especially in areas of tourist attraction.

On Monday 11 September 2017 National Bank of Greece launched its new Card Management System (CMS), stepping up its efforts to upgrade its systems and develop innovative products and services in order to effectively address competition.

By setting up a state-of-the-art and flexible platform for the management of NBG cards, the Bank lays the basis for developing a new business card model, cost-effective, with a competitive advantage in the market and centralized management capability. The new CMS will:

support the Bank's Business Units needs in developing innovative products and services, today and tomorrow

reduce significantly, at Group level, the IT costs for card support (in-house & outsourcing)

release the Bank from the need to make significant outlays in the future and constant changes to the Card Systems, in

order to comply with International Organizations' mandatory directives as well as the payment systems as applicable in each country where the Bank operates achieve synergies between Units, both in

operational management and in developing new products.

Upon completion of the project, all debit card products issued by NBG successfully switched to the new Way4 system, which is considered a leading software platform globally. Furthermore, besides the switch and service of more than 4 million debit cards in the new system, the operational characteristics and pricing of products were upgraded. In addition, NBG became the first bank in Greece, and among the first globally, to supply credit cardholders with the upgraded secure identification verification method for online purchases, by means of MasterCard Identity Check. By using the new service for online purchases at secure e-shops, the user does not generate a static password, but receives a One-time password (OTP) via sms or email.

In the next phases, NBG's prepaid cards and credit cards as well as the acquiring portfolio will switch platform, and all the activities and services that make up the turnover in card business will thereafter be developed and supported by this state-of-the-art integrated card management platform.

JABBER app

Group IT Operations & Infrastructure Division

Our Bank needed a collaboration tool that would enable continuous and secure communication available both within and outside the "walls". There was a need for communication not to be limited to just between bank staff, but to remain open for customers and associates as well. The point was to forward incoming calls to the direct lines of the staff to their laptops or mobile devices no matter where they are. Users can access the app through their smartphones, tablets, laptops and pc/mac desktops. Accordingly, we designed and implemented an innovative collaboration solu-tion, by linking the Bank's IP phones with mobile devices and laptops, thereby providing a unique communication experience.

Features and benefits: Instant Messaging & Presence: view the

availability of users and initiate a chat

Business-Class IP Voice & Video calls

All-round communication experience

Mobile Collaboration, wherever you are from any device

The system provides HD voice and video calls whether you are in the office or using your mobile device. In cases of remote access, you can use the services outside the corporate network while maintaining the same level of security for your personal data and the connection data. This inte-gration allows you to receive calls via the Bank's IP corporate infrastructure, using any wireless net-work such as LAN/WLAN and mobile data net-works.

With the launch of the new system all smart devices are transformed to registered devices with

the central telephony infrastruc-ture, i.e. they be-come an extension of the cor-porate office desk phone, thus enabling all calls, wherever made, to appear as internal calls. The solution delivers high-ly secure, encrypted, and reliable communications for both your personal data and the data transmitted during calls. Also, voice, video, and instant messaging are accompanied by the Pre-sence service, enabling you to see the availability of colleagues within the organization. You can immediately see who is online, available, away, on the phone, at a meeting, and so on. For the sixth consecutive year, on Thursday 29 June 2017, the tech festival IMPACT BITE Awards 2017 was held, attended by more than 500 leading business representatives. The majority of this year's candidate projects were notable for display-ing innovation, inventiveness, and clear business benefits. NBG received an award for the JABBER app.

NBG's Bank Network staff was rewarded for achieving the vehicle insurance targets for H2 2016, with a reward trip to Saint Petersburg, Russia. Saint Petersburg was once the capital of the Russian Empire. The dazzling palaces, the public buildings, the fine churches, and the picturesque canals make St. Perersburg the jewel of Northern Europe. Our staff was received with a warm "bread and salt" welcome in traditional Russian fashion, accompanied by folk music. The winners of the competition as well as NBG and Ethniki Insurance management representatives, were given a guided tour of the Hermitage Museum, the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoye Selo, the Peterhof Palace, the Summer Palace of Peter the Great with its impressive fountains, and watched a performance of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake at the

Hermitage Theater. They also travelled by river launch on the city's rivers and canals, and had the chance to see the spectacular opening bridges that allow ships to pass through, here where the summer nights last only a few hours.

What made the trip particularly enjoyable for everyone involved was the chance to share expe- riences and exchange views on best practices in the workplace. The successful NBG employees were accompanied by Nelly Tzakou-Lambropoulou, General Manager Retail Banking, Branch Network Division Managers D. Kalogeropoulos, Ch. Asima-kopoulos and A. Nazidou, Regional Managers Ch. Granitsas and K. Melanakis, the Head of NBG Bancassurance D. Nodaros, and senior managers of Ethniki Insurance: Chairman Ch. Sardelis, Deputy CEO S. Konstantas, and Manager of Banc- assurance, Marketing, Advertising & Alternative Distribution Cooperations I. Sifakis.

The members of senior management thanked the staff for the successful operations of the Bancassurance Network, and promised that they will support them in achieving even better re-sults. With incentives such as this, you can be sure that everyone will do their best!

Aivali and Aeolis of Asia Minor was the life-long work of architect Dimitros Psarros, who re-searched and wrote this book over the period from 1969 until his death in 2008. The book com-prises an architectural and urban-planning study that seeks to give a reconstruction of this demo-graphically unique city of Asia Minor, whose po-pulation was almost exclusively Greek until 1922. The research of Psarros, as he stated in his own words, “uncovers step by step the development of the city and its environs, drawing on information found in the written historical sources and on oral evidence”. The book pre-sents drawings and photographs that illustrate the architectural wealth of the city “in an en-deavour to preserve, albeit in images, something of what has been lost or will shortly disappear for good”.

The text traces, parish by parish, the urban deve-lopment of Aivali, Moschonisia and Yenitsaro-chori, and is accompanied by a detailed account of the surrounding areas, including monasteries, chapels, and the islets that make up the nearby archipelago. Last, the appendices include an extensive chronological overview of the region (from 1000 A.D. to 1923), as well as other histori-cal, demographic and anthropological data, followed by a bibliography. The illustrative mate-rial includes photographs from the late 19th century through to our own times, and original topographical and architectural drawings by both the author and Turkish students of the architectural heritage of the lands in question.
