RESEARCH EXPERIENCE •

Documentation and optimization of new suspension grouts based on pulverized fly ash or microfine cements, investigation and prediction models of the injectability and penetrability of suspensions in soils, mechanical properties and behavior of grouted soils, design and construction of special laboratory apparatus for the production of grouted soil specimens, development of procedures for grout and grouted soil testing. The research on Grouting for Soil Improvement was conducted through two research projects. The first one (PENED-89ED434) was financed by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology of the Greek Ministry of Industry, Energy and Technology (Principal Investigator: D.K. Atmatzidis, Professor). Democritus University of Thrace, University of Patras and TITAN Cement Company S.A. have participated in the second research project (PENED-03ED527), which was co-financed by the European Union – European Social Fund (75%) and the Greek Ministry of Development – General Secretariat for Research and Technology (25%) (Principal Investigator: I.N. Markou).

Grouting for Soil Improvement

• Investigation of the mechanical behavior of geosynthetic reinforced soils and evaluation of soil – geosynthetic interaction by triaxial compression (development – documentation of a new method) and conventional or large-scale direct shear testing. Six sands, one fine-grained soil and approximately 40 geotextiles and geomembranes were used for the production of specimens with various dimensions for triaxial compression testing.

Geosynthetics

The research on Geosynthetics was conducted through three research projects. The first one (PRENED-99) was financed by the Research Committee of Democritus University of Thrace (Principal Investigator: I.N. Markou). Democritus University of Thrace and Thrace Plastics S.A. have participated in the second research project (PAVET-AMTh 25), which was financed by the Greek General Secretariat for Research and Technology

(Principal Investigator: S. Pantazopoulou, Professor). The third project was funded by ETAA (Principal Investigator: I.N. Markou).

Experimental investigation of the relationship between the residual shear strength and the swelling characteristics and behavior of swelling clays, based on the results of ring shear and reversal shear box tests. The research in this field was conducted mainly through a research project financed by ETAA (Principal Investigator: I.N. Markou).
