Interferon-α-2b
Thyroiditis: case reportA 51-year-old woman developed subacute thyroiditis during
treatment with interferon (IFN)-α-2b for chronic hepatitis B.The woman presented with fatigue, weight loss, insomnia,
irritability and palpitations 6 months after starting treatmentwith IFN-α-2b [dosage not stated]. Thyroid function testsrevealed elevated free T3 and free T4 levels and a decreasedthyroid stimulating hormone level. Thyroid scintigraphy priorto starting IFN-α-2b therapy had shown homogenous Tc-99msodium pertechnetate uptake and mild hyperplasia in bothlobes; at the time of presentation thyroid scintigraphy showeddiffusely reduced uptake in her thyroid gland consistent withsubacute thyroiditis. There was no evidence of viraemia.
The woman was treated with NSAIDs and β-adrenoceptorantagonist therapy, and her thyroid function tests quicklyreturned to normal. IFN-α-2b treatment was continued for12 months without subsequent episodes of thyroiditis.Omur O, et al. Subacute thyroiditis during interferon therapy for chronic hepatitisB infection.
