Reactions 986 - 31 Jan 2004 Interferon-α-2b Thyroiditis: case report A 51-year-old woman developed subacute thyroiditis during treatment with interferon (IFN)-α-2b for chronic hepatitis B. The woman presented with fatigue, weight loss, insomnia, irritability and palpitations 6 months after starting treatment with IFN-α-2b [dosage not stated]. Thyroid function tests revealed elevated free T3 and free T4 levels and a decreased thyroid stimulating hormone level. Thyroid scintigraphy prior to starting IFN-α-2b therapy had shown homogenous Tc-99m sodium pertechnetate uptake and mild hyperplasia in both lobes; at the time of presentation thyroid scintigraphy showed diffusely reduced uptake in her thyroid gland consistent with subacute thyroiditis. There was no evidence of viraemia. The woman was treated with NSAIDs and β-adrenoceptor antagonist therapy, and her thyroid function tests quickly returned to normal. IFN-α-2b treatment was continued for 12 months without subsequent episodes of thyroiditis. ¨ Om¨ ur O, et al. Subacute thyroiditis during interferon therapy for chronic hepatitis B infection.
