Interferon-αFatigue, anorexia, anxiety and depression: casereport
A 57-year-old man, who had a history of diabetesmellitus, developed fatigue, anorexia, anxiety anddepression following treatment with interferon-α formetastatic renal cell carcinoma.
The man began treatment in April 2007 with IM naturalhuman interferon-α [Sumiferon] 3 × 106IU three timesweekly for bulky lung metastases. The day after eachinjection, he developed a fever. After seven injections, hisdose was increased to 6 × 106IU and maintained for fiveinjections. Soon after, he presented with general fatigue,anorexia, a high level of anxiety and depression.
Interferon-α was discontinued. Two weeks later, theman’s mental status normalised and he was maintained on6 × 106IU once a week. Interferon-α was withheld in April2009 after 88 administrations due to worsening of hisdiabetes. He remained in complete remission 14 monthsafter stopping interferon-α.Orikasa S, et al.
