About the GeSiM mbH

Our privately owned company was founded in 1995 as a spin-off from the renowned HZDR research centre in Dres-

den, Germany. Being a key player in microsystems technology and provider for made-to-order micro-components

of silicon, glass, and plastic, GeSiM has evolved into a highly innovative bioinstrumentation company offering five

instrument platforms for sub-microlitre liquid handling, microcontact printing, microfluidics, and other facets of lab

automation.

First and foremost, GeSiM stands for the development of novel and individual technical solutions and applications.

For both end customers and OEMs, our engineers are keen to design components or full systems from scratch or cus-

tomize our existing standard instruments. Researchers and entrepreneurs in the life sciences and other fields around

the globe already rely on our technology. Being a small enterprise, GeSiM is committed to quick decision making and

maintaining close contact to our customers and distributors, and we have helped customers on their way to prosper-

ing businesses. As a high-tech supplier, we have also frequently taken part in research projects.

Microdispensing and Microarraying

with up to 16 of these non-contact dispensers

for spotting microarrays and biochips. The

instrument comes in two sizes and with many

extras, such as droplet volume measurement,

double wash station, cooled microplate and

substrate holders, humidifier, a variety of

GeSiM and third-party dispensers (including

pins), a microscope to read in positions of

small objects, a plate handler, and much more.

The Nano-Plotter is modular and can thus

grow as required, in research labs as well as

in the diagnostics industry.

GeSiM’s first product is a family of patented

piezoelectric picolitre pipetting tips produced

by silicon-glass micromachining. They are the

heart of the GeSiM Nano-Plotter, a platform

3D Bioprinting

The GeSiM BioScaffolder uses air pressure

actuation and other extrusion methods

to build three-dimensional scaffolds from

various biomaterials (e.g. collagen, alginate,

bone cement) and plastic using multiple inde-

pendent Z-drives carrying heatable/coolable

cartridge holders. What sets this system apart

is the integration of piezo microdispensing,

allowing to spot proteins and cells on top or

between scaffold layers, all with an easy to

use graphical user interface. With options

such as CAD data import, core/shell dispens-

ing, melt electrospinning and much more, and

with its open system architecture, the system

is ideally suited for 3D cell culture and tissue

engineering.

tion, was developed. Aside from safety and

flexibility, this system saves chemicals and

runs different synthesis protocols in parallel,

again using a multi-Z head. As always, a clear

graphical user interface helps to freely define

the sequence of events. Heatable reactor, sin-

gle-particle powder dispensing, multi-lumen

pipette with vacuum gripper, flip cap opener,

and handling of disposable tips and Luer

needles are among the endless list of tools;

so the picture on the left shows only one of

the many possibilities. The smaller platform is

suitable for PET tracer synthesis in a hot cell.

Microcontact Printing

Microfluidics

Miniaturization has become central in bio-

analytics and chemistry, as it speeds up

experiments and saves cost. From its earliest

beginnings, GeSiM has devoted itself to the

development of tailor-made miniaturized

components and flow-through systems from

various materials using methods of microchip

manufacturing, in our own clean room. We

also offer packaging, precision mechanics and

software development. This work led to the

development of off-the-shelf systems such as

flow sensors and microvalves, and a mi-

croperfusion system with silicone elastomer

(PDMS) channels for microscopes, the MicCell.

Its specialty is a standardized chip-to-world

interface, easy handling (allowing to reuse

many parts) and modularity. An easy-to-use

casting station, different fluidic system sizes,

a macrofluidic environment (syringe pumps,

valves, software), and accessories such as sili-

con masters, hydrogel microvalves, and micro-

electrodes complete this versatile system.

In microcontact printing (µCP), biomolecules

are transferred from an elastomer stamp to

a surface in a simple way. µContactPrinters

from GeSiM take the risk out of this (often

manual) operation. A patented, pneumatically

controlled stamping technology generates

2D patterns by µCP, but also enables 3D

structures via nanoimprint lithography (NIL),

both down to the nanoscale. Depending on

the configuration, the fully automatic system

includes a stamp casting station, various

stamps, manual or automatic substrate

adjustment/heating, picolitre dispensing, spin

coating, UV illumination, and more. PTFE-coat-

ed silicon masters for easy stamp fabrication

are provided by GeSiM.

Chemical synthesis (e.g. of radiopharmaceu-

ticals), when done manually, always poses

the risk of contamination. For this the BSyS, a

system for unsupervised automatic opera-
