Fractional Laplacians – Navier vs Dirichlet

Nazarov A. I.(St. Petersburg Dept of Steklov Institute

and St. Petersburg State University)

Let Ω be a bounded domain with smooth boundary. We compare two naturaltypes of fractional Laplacians (−∆)s, namely, the “Navier” and the “Dirichlet” ones.We denote their quadratic forms by QN

s,Ω and QDs,Ω, respectively.

Theorem 1 Let s > −1, s /∈ N0. Then for u ∈ Dom(QDs,Ω), u 6≡ 0, the following

relations hold:

QNs,Ω[u] > QD

s,Ω[u], if 2k < s < 2k + 1, k ∈ N0;

QNs,Ω[u] < QD

s,Ω[u], if 2k − 1 < s < 2k, k ∈ N0.

Moreover, for u ∈ Dom(QDs,Ω) the following facts hold (here F (Ω) stands for the

class of smooth and bounded domains containing Ω).

QDs,Ω[u] = inf

Ω′∈F (Ω)QN

s,Ω′ [u], if 2k < s < 2k + 1, k ∈ N0;

QDs,Ω[u] = sup

Ω′∈F (Ω)

QNs,Ω′ [u], if 2k − 1 < s < 2k, k ∈ N0.

We also give a quantitative version of the last statement.

The following theorem gives pointwise comparison of fractional Laplacians.

Theorem 2 Let 0 < |s| < 1, and let f ∈ Dom(QDs,Ω), f ≥ 0, f 6≡ 0. Then the

following relations hold:

(−∆Ω)sNf > (−∆Ω)sDf, if 0 < s < 1;

(−∆Ω)sNf < (−∆Ω)sDf, if −1 < s < 0.

Here all inequalities are understood in the sense of distributions.

This talk is based on joint papers with Roberta Musina, see [1-3].
