Theorem

Suppose Σ is a surface, and G is an embedded graph. Then the Eulercharacteristic χ(Σ) := V − E + F is correctly defined.

Euler characteristic and attachments

Question: How does χ(Σ) change when attaching a handle? Whenattaching a Mobius strip?

If Σ′ is Σ with attached Mobius band, then

χ(Σ′) = χ(Σ)− 1

If Σ′ is Σ with attached handle, then

χ(Σ′) = χ(Σ)− 2

Orientable triangulations

Definition

A triangulation of a surface Σ is an embedding of a graph G into Σ suchthat all faces are triangles.

Definition

A triangulation is orientable if all faces can be oriented in a coherent way:

Definition

Similarly for any 2-cell decomposition of Σ.

Surfaces with and without boundary

Recall: a surface (in Rn) is a geometric figure that is locallyhomeomorphic to R2.

A surface with boundary is a geometric figure that is locallyhomeomorphic either to R2 or to the upper half planeH2 = {(x , y) ∈ R2 | y ≥ 0}.Exercise: guess what are some examples.

Surfaces are surfaces with (empty) boundary.

Classification theorem

Theorem

Any compact surface Σ is determined uniquely up to homeomorphism bythe following data:

χ(Σ), orientability , number of boundary components

In particular, orientable surfaces with no boundary are just spheres withhandles. Non-orientable surfaces are just spheres with Mobius bands (morethan one).
