—Effective methylating agent for preparation of rnethyl-substituted oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur compounds.

—Methylation is usually carried out in the pres­ence of an alkali. While the first methyl group re­acts more readily than the second, both groups react readily in an essentially anhydrous system.

CORROSION CHARACTERISTICS —Anhydrous Dimethyl Sulfate is inert to iron

Dimethyl Sulfa te, a highly reactive compound,

is a useful methylating agent in organic syn­

thesis. Of fer ing economy in methyl-substitu­

tion reactions, it is more reactive a t low tem­

pera tures than most other methylating agents,

a n d has a high boiling point (188.8°C.) which

permits its use a t atmospheric pressures.

A clear, colorless l iquid, Dimethyl Sulfate

is soluble in alcohol, e ther and benzene. It is

used in the manufacture o f a number o f syn­

thet ic drugs, including caffeine, codeine, anti-

p y r i n e a n d methyl hydrazine sulfates. In a d ­

di t ion, it finds application in the manufacture

o f d y e intermediates.
