Σύντομη παρουσίαση για τις δραστηριότητες του Cyprus Community Media Centre (CCMC), που στόχο έχει να υποστηρίζει την οπτικοακουστική αγωγή ανάμεσα στις κοινότητες του νησιού. Στην παρουσίαση θα γίνει αναφορά στην έννοια του ‘community media’ και θα προβληθεί σύντομη ταινία που αναδεικνύει τους τρόπους με τους οποίους το CCMC βοήθα ανθρώπους στο να αποκτήσουν τις ικανότητες και τα εφόδια για να μπορούν να 1

Το Position Among the Stars είναι το τελευταίο μέρος της τριλογίας του Leonard Retel Helmrich για την Ινδονησία, που παρουσιάζει τη ζωή της χριστιανομουσουλμανικής οικογένειας Sjamsuddin. Το τελευταίο αυτό μέρος της τριλογίας αποτελεί τη συνέχεια των πολυβραβευμένων ντοκιμαντέρ The Eye of the Day και Shape of the Moon (που εξασφάλισε το Βραβείο της Κριτικής Επιτροπής Ντοκιμαντέρ Παγκόσμιου Κινηματογράφου στο Κινηματογραφικό Φεστιβάλ Sundance το 2005). Εδώ, ο σκηνοθέτης Leonard Retel Helmrich ολοκληρώνει το λεπτομερές πορτρέτο της Ινδονησίας μέσα από τα μάτια μιας οικογένειας που ζει στις φτωχογειτονιές της Τζακάρτα. H γιαγιά Rumidjah, μια φτωχή Χριστιανή, βιώνει την κοινωνία που αλλάζει και την επιρροή της παγκοσμιοποίησης στις ζωές της νεαρής εγγονής της Tari, και των γιων της, Bakti και Dwi, μουσουλμάνοι στο θρήσκευμα. Position Among the Stars is the concluding part of Leonard Retel Helmrich's trilogy on Indonesia, which follows the Christian-Islamic Sjamsuddin family. This final installment of a trilogy follows the multiple award-winning documentaries The Eye of the Day and Shape of the Moon (winner of the World Cinema Documentary Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival) as filmmaker Leonard Retel Helmrich concludes his in-depth portrait of Indonesia seen through the eyes of one family living in the slums of Jakarta.

Grandmother Rumidjah, a poor old Christian woman, weathers a

changing society and the influence of globalization reflected in the lives of her juvenile granddaughter, Tari, and her sons, Bakti and Dwi, who are Muslims. Modern-day Indonesia is entrenched in a tug-of-war between Christianity and Islam, young and old, rich and poor, and beset by encroaching globalization that threatens the simple life that Rumidjah knows so well. Forgoing interviews and voice-over narration, Position Among the Stars allows each exquisite detail to come together and construct a rich mosaic of Indonesia today. The result is poignant, breathtaking, and a singularly stellar vérité triumph.

Το The Oath παρουσιάζει τις συμπλεκόμενες δραματικές ιστορίες δύο κουνιάδων, του Abu Jandal και του Salim Hamdan, των οποίων οι διασυνδέσεις με την Αλ Κάιντα τη δεκαετία του ’90 τους έχουν οδηγήσει σε διαφορετικές πορείες. Η ταινία καταπιάνεται με την καθημερινότητα του Abu Jandal, οδηγού ταξί στη Sana’a της Υεμένης, και το στρατοδικείο του Hamdan στις φυλακές του Γκουαντάναμο. The Oath, is the interlocking drama of two brothers-in-law, Abu Jandal and Salim Hamdam, whose associations with al Qaeda in the 1990s propelled them on divergent courses. The film delves into Abu Jandal’s daily life as a taxi driver in Sana’a, Yemen, and Hamdan’s military tribunal in Guantanamo Bay prison. Abu Jandal and Hamdan’s personal stories—how they came to serve as Osama bin Laden’s bodyguard and driver respectively—act as prisms through which to humanize and contextualize a world the Western media demonizes. As Hamdan’s trial progresses, his military lawyers challenge fundamental flaws in the court system. As charismatic Abu Jandal dialogues with his son, Muslim students, and journalists, he generously unveils the complex evolution of his belief system since 9/11.

Σε μια πυκνοκατοικημένη συνοικία της Αθήνας, κάθε μέρα μετά το σχολείο, η Αλεξάνδρα, ο Βλαντ, η Χρύσα και η υπόλοιπη παρέα μαζεύονται μπροστά στο σπίτι του Χρίστου για να παίξουν μπάλα μέχρι την ώρα που θα πάνε για ύπνο. Με το που ξεκινούν το παιχνίδι, οι γείτονες προσπαθούν να τους σταματήσουν με φωνές, απειλές ή ακόμα με τη βία. Τα παιδιά τους αψηφούν απροκάλυπτα, καθώς δεν έχουν πού αλλού να πάνε. Η Αλεξάνδρα αποφασίζει να μιλήσει με το Δήμαρχο και επιμένει να’ρθει ο ίδιος να δει με τα μάτια του την κατάσταση. Έτσι αρχίζει μια μακρόχρονη εκστρατεία για να πείσουν το Δήμο να τους φτιάξει ένα χώρο για παιχνίδι. Σε όλο αυτό το χρονικό διάστημα αποκαλύπτονται οι

ζωές και οι αντιλήψεις των παιδιών, ενώ η αποφασιστικότητα και η φιλία τους τροφοδοτούν την ικανότητά τους να αντιμετωπίζουν καταστάσεις και ενισχύουν την αυτοπεποίθησή τους. Η ταινία προσφέρει πρόσβαση στις προσωπικές στιγμές μιας αξιοθαύμαστης ομάδας χαρακτήρων.

In a crowded part of Athens, each day after school, Alexandra, Vlad, Chrysa and the rest of their crew gather in front of Christos’ house to play soccer until bedtime. But as soon as they begin, the neighbors assault them with curses, threats and sometimes violence. The kids’ reaction is fiercely defiant. There’s nowhere else to go. Alexandra decides to talk to the mayor and insist that he sees the situation for himself. Thus begins a yearlong campaign to get the town to build them a play area. Over this time the kids’ lives and perceptions are revealed while their determination and friendship fuels their coping skills and sharpens their resolve. The film offers an intimate access to a remarkable cast of characters.

Η ρωσική βιομηχανική πόλη Chelyabinsk είναι σήμερα μια από τις πλέον ραδιενεργής περιοχές του πλανήτη. Την περίοδο του Ψυχρού Πολέμου ήταν μια από τις μυστικές πόλεις της Σοβιετικής Ένωσης και εδώ δημιουργήθηκε η πρώτη ατομική βόμβα. Σήμερα, η πόλη είναι γνωστή για τη μόλυνσή της από τη ραδιενέργεια, ωστόσο διαθέτει ταυτόχρονα και μια από τις πιο ζωντανές σύγχρονες χορευτικές σκηνές της Ρωσίας. Η ταινία παρουσιάζει δύο νεαρούς χορευτές, τον Vova και τη Masha, παγιδευμένους σε μια πόλη που τους κάνει ν’αρρωστούν. Χρησιμοποιούν το χορό ως μια μορφή τέχνης, για να δημιουργήσουν ένα χώρο όπου μπορούν να αντλήσουν πίστη και ελπίδα για το μέλλον.

The Russian industrial city of Chelyabinsk is currently one of the world's most radioactive sites. During the Cold War it was one of the Soviet Union's secret cities and it developed the first atomic bomb. Today the city is known for its radioactive contamination –

but it also has one of Russia's most vibrant contemporary dance scenes. The film follows two young dancers, Vova and Masha, who are stuck in a city that makes them sick. They use dance as an art form to create a space where they can find faith and hope for the future.

Πώς είναι να διεισδύει κανείς στη ζωή ενός αγνώστου; Σε αυτό το συλλογισμό βασίζεται το μυθοπλαστικό αυτό ντοκιμαντέρ, που γυρίστηκε εξολοκλήρου με κινητό τηλέφωνο. Με στόχο να διαπεράσει τον τοίχο της ανωνυμίας στο αστικό περιβάλλον, ο σκηνοθέτης συνομιλεί με διάφορους ανθρώπους στους δρόμους του Λονδίνου. Μέσα από την επικοινωνία αυτή αναδύονται τρεις βασικοί χαρακτήρες: Μια βραζιλιάνα καλλονή με το όνομα Sandrine, σε αναζήτηση συζύγου, ο ναρκομανής Steve και η τραγουδίστρια και ποιήτρια Precious. Δεν υπάρχει σενάριο. Κάτι που αρχίζει σαν μια ασαφής ιδέα μεταμορφώνεται σταδιακά σε ένα μπερδεμένο πρότζεκτ και ο σκηνοθέτης Boris Gerrets αρχίζει να αμφισβητεί σοβαρά το δικό του ρόλο σε όλη αυτή την ιστορία. Όταν δημιουργεί δεσμό με τη Sandrine, μετατρέπεται από παρατηρητής σε συμμετέχοντας στην ίδια του την ταινία. Παράλληλα, συμβαίνουν πράγματα που δεν θα μπορούσαν ποτέ να συμβούν χωρίς την κάμερα. Η κινηματογράφηση δημιουργεί μια στιγμή, ενώ ταυτόχρονα καταστρέφει μια άλλη. Σύμφωνα με τον Gerrets, αυτό είναι το παράδοξο που ορίζει τη σχέση του κινηματογράφου με την πραγματικότητα.

What would it be like to enter into the life of a complete stranger? That’s the premise of this docu-fiction, which was shot entirely on a cell phone. In order to break through the wall of urban anonymity, the filmmaker talks to various people on the streets of London, out

of whom three main characters materialize: a Brazilian beauty named Sandrine, who’s looking for a husband, a drug addict named Steve, and Precious, a singer and poetess. There is no script: what begins as a vague idea gradually metamorphoses into a confusing project, and filmmaker Boris Gerrets begins to have grave doubts about his own role in all of this. When he ends up having an affair with Sandrine, he goes from observer to participant in his own film. At the same time, things happen that would never have been possible without the camera. Filming creates one moment while simultaneously destroying another. According to Gerrets, that is the paradox that defines cinema’s relationship to reality.

Ο Jasper Naaijkens, μοντέρ της πολυβραβευμένης ταινίας Position Among The Stars του Ολλανδού σκηνοθέτη Leonard Retel Helmrich, θα παρουσιάσει την τεχνική της «μιας και μόνο λήψης», μια τεχνική κινηματογράφισης την οποία ανακάλυψε και εξέλιξε ο ίδιος ο σκηνοθέτης και τον έκανε παγκοσμίως γνωστό. Παρών στο Μaster Class θα είναι και η παραγωγός της ταινίας, Hetty Naaijkens, η οποία θα μιλήσει για τις μεθόδους παραγωγής της ταινίας. Το Master Class προσφέρει την ευκαιρία γνωριμίας με την δουλειά ενός από τους σημαντικότερους σκηνοθέτες ντοκιμαντέρ σήμερα.

Jasper Naaijkens, editor of Leonard Retel Helmrich’s award winning film Position Among The Stars, will present the ‘Single Shot Cinema’ Technique, a method of cinematography that was invented and developed by the director himself. Present at the Master Class will be the producer of the film Hetty Naaijkens, who will talk about the production methods of the film. This is a rare opportunity to participate in a Master Class on one of the most interesting and innovative documentary makers around today.

Η αναγνωρισμένη προγραμματίστρια φεστιβάλ, λέκτορας και σκηνοθέτης Rada Sesic θα παρευρεθεί στο Φεστιβάλ υπό την ιδιότητα της ως μια από τους κύριους προγραμματιστές των Sarajevo Film Festival (www.sff.ba), Φεστιβάλ IDFA (www.idfa.nl), IFFR Rotterdam (www.filmfestivalrotterdam.com) και Utrecht Eastern Neighbors IFF (www.enff.nl). Στην παρουσίαση, η Sesic θα δώσει πληροφορίες για τη διαδικασία αίτησης και συμμετοχής σε διεθνή φεστιβάλ, καθώς επίσης και για διάφορα εκπαιδευτικά προγράμματα στα οποία σκηνοθέτες και παραγωγοί μπορούν να συμμετάσχουν. Ιδιαίτερα στο Rough Cut Boutique, μια νέα πρωτοβουλία του Sarajevo FF για σκηνοθέτες ντοκιμαντέρ στην οποία μπορούν να συμμετάσχουν και Κύπριοι σκηνοθέτες και παραγωγοί.Με την Rada Sesic θα διευθετηθούν επίσης και ατομικές συναντήσεις (μετά από σχετική αίτηση) με επαγγελματίες κινηματογραφιστές.

Acclaimed festival programmer, lecturer and film author Rada Sesic will attend the Festival in her capacity as the main selector of the documentary competition at Sarajevo Film Festival (www.sff.ba), one of the programmers at IDFA in Amsterdam (www.idfa.nl), IFFR Rotterdam (www.filmfestivalrotterdam.com) and the programming director of a new film festival in Utrecht Eastern Neighbours (www.enff.nl). In the presentation, Sesic will give information about festival participation, selection process and about various international workshops and initiatives which the filmmakers can become involved in. Focusing especially on Rough Cut Boutique, a new initiative of Sarajevo FF, for documentary film makers to which Cypriots can also apply. In addition to the presentation, selected

projects (following application procedure) will be discussed with Rada Sesic in dedicated, scheduled one-to-one meetings.

Naked Finnish men in saunas speak straight from the heart and, in the warmth of rusty stoves, cleanse themselves, both physically and mentally, towards the film's deeply emotional and unforgettable finale. The film travels through Finland joining men from all walks of life in many different saunas to let us hear their touching stories about love, death, birth, and friendship ─ about life. Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος των ορυκτών που χρησιμοποιούνται για την κατασκευή κινητών τηλεφώνων προέρχεται από τα ορυχεία του ανατολικού τμήματος της Λαϊκής Δημοκρατίας του Κονγκό. Ο δυτικός κόσμος αγοράζει τα ούτω καλούμενα ορυκτά της σύγκρουσης και χρηματοδοτεί με τον τρόπο αυτό έναν εμφύλιο πόλεμο ο οποίος, σύμφωνα με οργανώσεις ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων, αποτελεί την πιο αιματηρή διένεξη από το Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο. Ο πόλεμος θα συνεχιστεί ενόσω ένοπλες ομάδες μπορούν να χρηματοδοτούν τις εχθροπραξίες τους πουλώντας ορυκτά. Το Blood in the Mobile αποδεικνύει το συσχετισμό μεταξύ των τηλεφώνων μας και του εμφυλίου πολέμου στο Κονγκό. Ο σκηνοθέτης Frank Poulsen ταξιδεύει στη Λαϊκή Δημοκρατία του Κονγκό όπου βλέπει με τα μάτια του τις παράνομες εργασίες εξόρυξης. Εξασφαλίζει πρόσβαση στο μεγαλύτερο ορυχείο κασσίτερου του Κονγκό, που ελέγχεται από διάφορες ένοπλες ομάδες. Εδώ μικρά παιδιά δουλεύουν μέρες ολόκληρες σε στενά τούνελ για να εξορύξουν τα ορυκτά που θα καταλήξουν στα κινητά μας τηλέφωνα. Μετά την επίσκεψή του στο ορυχείο, ο Frank Poulsen καταβάλλει τεράστιες προσπάθειες να επικοινωνήσει με τη Nokia, τη μεγαλύτερη εταιρεία κατασκευής τηλεφώνων στον κόσμο. Της ζητά να του εγγυηθεί ότι δεν αγοράζει ορυκτά που είναι προϊόν των συγκρούσεων και συνεπώς ότι δεν χρηματοδοτεί τον πόλεμο στο Κονγκό. Η Νokia δεν είναι σε θέση να του δώσει αυτή την εγγύηση.

We love our cell phones and the selection between different models has never been bigger. But the production of phones has a dark, bloody side. The main part of minerals used to produce cell phones are coming from the mines in the Eastern DR Congo. The Western World is buying these so-called conflict minerals and thereby financing a civil war that, according to human rights organisations, has been the bloodiest conflict since World War II. The war will continue as long as armed groups can finance their warfare by selling minerals. Blood in the Mobile shows the connection between our phones and the civil war in the Congo. Director Frank Poulsen travels to DR Congo to see the illegal mine industry with his own eyes. He gets access to Congo’s largest tin-mine, which is being controlled by different armed groups, and

where children work for days in narrow mine tunnels to dig out the minerals that end up in our phones. After visiting the mine Frank Poulsen struggles to get to talk to Nokia, the Worlds largest phone company. Frank Poulsen wants them to guarantee that they are not buying conflict minerals and thereby financing the war in the Congo. Nokia cannot give him that guarantee.

Family Instinct is a film about incest - social taboo and a violation of religious norms. Zanda is a 28-year-old woman, trying to survive with her two children in a god-forsaken Latvian village. Valdis is serving a year's sentence in prison for physically abusing them. Family Instinct follows Zanda for the duration of that year as she tries to cope with the hardships of poverty and the amorous attentions of several, frequently drunken, local men. During the year the local community forces her to make a difficult choice: to stay with Valdis or with her children. The film provides extraordinarily intimate footage of this group of vulnerable people, drawing the viewer into a claustrophobic but compelling world. The film is at times shocking and heartbreaking in its depiction of life on the edge, but its central characters nevertheless display a wonderful sense of humor and even optimism in the face of terrible adversity.

Η ημερίδα γίνεται σε συνεργασία με τον Ευρωπαϊκό Οργανισμό ‘Sources 2’, ο οποίος ειδικεύεται σε θέματα συγγραφής σεναρίων, ανάπτυξη ιδεών κτλ. Ο Arash T. Riahi, σύμβουλος του ‘Sources 2’, θα παρουσιάσει ένα μονοήμερο σεμινάριο με επίκεντρο την ανάπτυξη ιδέας, την αφήγηση και τη συγγραφή σεναρίου για ντοκιμαντέρ μεγάλου μήκους. Το σεμινάριο απευθύνεται σε δημιουργούς ντοκιμαντέρ (σκηνοθέτες, παραγωγούς κτλ) και στόχος του είναι να εξηγήσει πώς να γραφτεί μια πρόταση ώστε να προσελκύσει ενδιαφέρον και να έχει προοπτικές ανάπτυξης. Ιδανικά, η ιστορία πρέπει να είναι συνυφασμένη με το κοινωνικό και πολιτιστικό υπόβαθρο των συγγραφέων, συνδυάζοντας παράλληλα και μια διαπολιτισμική προσέγγιση. Ευρύτερος στόχος του ‘Sources 2’ είναι να συμβάλει στην εξύψωση του επιπέδου της ευρωπαϊκής κινηματογραφικής παραγωγής και να προσελκύσει και πάλι το ευρωπαϊκό κοινό στις ευρωπαϊκές παραγωγές, τόσο στον κινηματογράφο όσο και στην τηλεόραση.

The ‘Sources 2’ adviser Arash T. Riahi will guide a one-day seminar focusing on concept development, storytelling and scriptwriting of feature-length documentaries. The target group is documentary filmmakers (directors, producers etc). The seminar will focus on supporting indigenous stories of interest to a European audience and with production potential. Ideally, the story should be rooted in the social and cultural backgrounds of its writer yet also have a cross-cultural appeal. The broad objective of ‘Sources 2’ is to contribute to a higher standard of European film production and to win back European audiences for European films, both in the cinema and on television.

τις τελευταίες στιγμές με τα αγαπημένα τους πρόσωπα μέχρι τις πρόσφατες εκταφές που άρχισαν να ρίχνουν φως στην πιθανή μοίρα τους. Καθώς αγωνίζονται να συμβιβαστούν με το τί συνέβη τότε και τί τους επιφυλάσσει το μέλλον, οι ιστορίες τους αποκαλύπτουν πώς τα γεγονότα αυτά επηρέασαν όχι μόνο τη ζωή τους αλλά και τη διαιρεμένη πατρίδα τους.

Some two thousand Greek and Turkish Cypriots went missing during the inter-communal conflicts of the 1960’s and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. Seven relatives of the missing recall their harrowing stories: from those last moments together with their loved ones until recent exhumations began to shed light on their possible fate. As these relatives struggle to come to terms with what happened then and what the future may hold, their stories reveal how these events shaped not only their lives but also their divided country.

Είκοσι πέντε χρόνια πριν διέθετε όλα τα απαραίτητα ενός σοσιαλιστικού παραδείσου: από ξύλινο πάτωμα μέχρι θυροτηλέφωνο, κεντρικό σύστημα ζεστού νερού, φωτισμό στο δρόμο, παγκάκια κάτω από καρποφόρες μηλιές. Κάποιος το αποκάλεσε το ‘Ξενοδοχείο Παράδεισος’ και το όνομα διατηρείται ακόμη. Με τα χρόνια, η πολυκατοικία άλλαξε. Το παρκέ χάθηκε. Το νερό σταμάτησε να τρέχει. Τα φώτα έσβησαν. Αλλά, ο καθένας από τους 1,500 ενοίκους έχει το δικό του σχέδιο για να ζήσει και πάλι το όνειρο ενός χαμένου Παραδείσου. Μια επίκαιρη ιστορία για το κοινωνικό πείραμα της Βουλγαρίας τη δεκαετία του ’70, την προσπάθεια ενσωμάτωσης των Ρόμα στην κοινωνία της χώρας και τις συνέπειες, 25 χρόνια μετά.

The young Demir dreams of a wedding. But his Roma tower block at the outskirts of a provincial town in Bulgaria is no place for romance. 25 years ago it had all it takes to be a panel socialist heaven: from parquet floors to intercom, the coveted hot water central, street lamps, benches under murmuring apple trees. Someone called the place Paradise Hotel – and the name stuck. But

with the years the block gradually changed. The parquet disappeared. The water stopped. The lights went off. But each of the 1 500 inhabitants has a plan on how to get back the dream of Paradise Lost. A timely story about the 70′s Bulgarian social experiment, an attempt to integrate Roma in the mainstream society, and the aftermath of it 25 years later.

Η Ανν υποφέρει από το σύνδρομο Τουρέτ, με αποτέλεσμα το σώμα της να κάνει πράγματα που η ίδια δε θέλει, όπως το να γυρνάει ξαφνικά γύρω γύρω ή να γλείφει τα πάντα. Μερικές φορές, η Ανν δυσκολεύεται να αντιμετωπίσει την αρρώστια της, ιδιαίτερα στο σχολείο. Φοβάται την κοροϊδία και τον εκφοβισμό. Κι έτσι 18

Eleven-year-old Anne is a beautiful girl. The kind of girl you can’t take your eyes off. And the longer you look, the more you see her ‘tics’. Anne suffers from Gilles de la Tourette’s syndrome. This makes her body do things she doesn’t want, such as suddenly spinning around or licking everything. Anne sometimes finds it hard to cope with her illness, especially in school. She’s afraid that others will bully her or laugh at her. Anne therefore tries to keep her tics in check, although that isn’t easy. She prefers ‘flying’ through life, so you won’t notice anything. When flying, she’s at her best. The documentary Flying Anne shows how Anne lives life with her tics. Tics that, in the end, she doesn’t want to lose either...

Η ταινία Waste Land, τα γυρίσματα της οποίας διάρκεσαν τρία σχεδόν χρόνια, ακολουθεί το γνωστό καλλιτέχνη Vik Muniz στο ταξίδι του, από τη βάση του στο Brooklyn, στη γενέτειρά του Βραζιλία και το μεγαλύτερο σκουπιδότοπο του κόσμου, το Jardim Gramacho, στα περίχωρα του Ρίο ντε Τζανέιρο. Εκεί φωτογραφίζει μια εκλεκτική ομάδα από «catadores» - όπως αυτοαποκαλούνται οι συλλέκτες ανακυκλώσιμων υλικών. Αρχικός στόχος του Muniz ήταν να «ζωγραφίσει» τους catadores με φόντο τα σκουπίδια. Ωστόσο, η συνεργασία του με τους εμπνευσμένους αυτούς χαρακτήρες, καθώς αναδημιουργούν φωτογραφικές απεικονίσεις του εαυτού τους μέσα από τα σκουπίδια, αποκαλύπτει την αξιοπρέπεια και συνάμα την απόγνωση των catadores, ενώ

αρχίζουν να φαντάζονται τη ζωή τους μέσα από μια νέα οπτική. Filmed over nearly three years, Waste Land follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker and co-directors João Jardim and Karen Harley have great access to the entire process and, in the end, offer stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.

Η Βρετανίδα θεατρική συγγραφέας Άντρια Ντάνμπαρ ήταν 19 χρόνων όταν, το 1980, το έργο της Η οδός Άρμπορ ανέβηκε στο θέατρο Ρόγιαλ Κορτ του Λονδίνου. Η στυγνή, διεισδυτική απεικόνιση του κύκλου της βίας και της εξάρτησης στο υποβαθμισμένο συγκρότημα εργατικών κατοικιών του Μπράντφορντ αντλεί υλικό απ’ την προσωπική εμπειρία της συγγραφέως, που κακοποιήθηκε και έμεινε έγκυος στα 15 της χρόνια. Αφού έγραψε δύο θεατρικά έργα κι ένα βιβλίο που μεταφέρθηκε στην μεγάλη οθόνη (το άγριο κι αστείο Rita, Sue & Bob Too), η νεαρή συγγραφέας, που χαρακτηρίστηκε ως «η ιδιοφυία από τις φτωχογειτονιές», πέθανε σε ηλικία 29 χρόνων. Η Οδός Άρμπορ της σκηνοθέτιδας Κλίο Μπαρνάρτ παρουσιάζει τη διαδρομή της Ντάνμπαρ και της οικογένειας που άφησε πίσω της, ρίχνοντας κυρίως φως στη ζωή της μεγάλης κόρης της, η οποία ακολούθησε πτωτική πορεία παρόμοια μ’ εκείνη της μητέρας της.

Πρόκειται για ένα μοναδικό ντοκιμαντέρ που περιλαμβάνει αυθεντικές συνεντεύξεις με μέλη της οικογένειας της Ντάνμπαρ, τις μαρτυρίες των οποίων εκφωνούν με playback ηθοποιοί, δημιουργώντας έτσι μια πολύ έντονη ατμόσφαιρα.

British playwright Andrea Dunbar was 19 when her play The Arbor was staged at London’s Royal Court Theater in 1980. Its raw, incisive portrayal of the cycles of violence and addiction on a tough Bradford housing estate was drawn directly from her own experience: She was brutalized and got pregnant at 15. Two plays and one film (the raucous, funny Rita, Sue & Bob Too) later, the young playwright once acclaimed as a “genius from the slums”, was dead, aged just 29. Clio Barnard’s film, also entitled The Arbor, looks both at Dunbar’s life and the experiences of the young family she left behind and in particular her eldest daughter, whose life followed a remarkably similar downward spiral to her mother’s. This is a documentary uniquely told, whereby audio interviews given by family members are lip-synced on-screen by actors to very powerful effect.

Ο Ion B είναι ένας 62χρονος άστεγος που ζει στο Βουκουρέστι. Τη δεκαετία του ’70 άρχισε να δημιουργεί κολλάζ στα οποία αναφέρεται ως «οι ταινίες μου». Το 2008, ένας νεαρός ιδιοκτήτης γκαλερί τέχνης ακούει τυχαία για τη δουλειά του Ion. Ο άστεγος άνδρας του δείχνει μια συλλογή από παλιές βαλίτσες γεμάτες με 1000 σχεδόν κολλάζ που έφτιαξε την περίοδο ’70 μέχρι ’90. Ένα μόλις χρόνο αργότερα, το 2009, ο Ion έχει πλέον καταξιωθεί ως ένας από τους σημαντικότερους σύγχρονους καλλιτέχνες της Ρουμανίας. Πρόκειται για την ιστορία ενός αυθεντικού καλλιτέχνη, που ζει στο περιθώριο της κοινωνίας και δημιουργεί τέχνη στην πιο αγνή της μορφή.

Ion B is a 62 year-old homeless man living in Bucharest. In the 70’s he started creating collages that he refers to as “my films”. In 2008, a young gallery owner heard by chance about Ion and his work. The homeless man showed him a collection of old suitcases filled with almost 1000 collages he had made between the 70’s and the 90’s. Only one year later, in 2009, Ion has become one of the most important contemporary Romanian artists. This is the story of a genuine artist living on the edge of society, creating art in its purest form.

Ένα πολύ προσωπικό και συνάμα συγκινητικό πορτρέτο της ζωής και του έργου του ρηξικέλευθου καλλιτέχνη παραστατικών τεχνών και πρωτοπόρου της μουσικής σκηνής Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (‘Throbbing Gristle’, ‘Psychic TV’) και της Lady Jaye, έτερον ήμισυ και συνεργάτιδάς του, με επίκεντρο τις τολμηρές σεξουαλικές μεταμορφώσεις του ζευγαριού για τους σκοπούς του πρότζεκτ “Pandrogyne”. Η ταινία είναι μια σαγηνευτική και βαθιά ρομαντική ερωτική ιστορία μεταξύ του πρωτοπόρου μουσικού και καλλιτέχνη παραστατικών τεχνών Genesis Breyer P-Orridge και της αδελφής ψυχής του, Lady Jaye, τα γυρίσματα της οποίας διήρκεσαν επτά χρόνια. Η ταινία απεικονίζει μέσα από μια εξαιρετικά καινοτόμo προσέγγιση ζητήματα αλλαγής φύλου και ταυτότητας και αφηγείται το χρονικό της σωματικής και πνευματικής συνένωσης δύο ανθρώπων. Η Losier ζωντανεύει αυτή την ήρεμη αφήγηση με πειραματικές τεχνικές όπως ο λαχανιασμένος ρυθμός της εν κινήσει κάμερας 16mm, η επιταχυνόμενη και αργή κίνηση, το γρήγορο μοντάζ, εικόνες σε υπό και υπερέκθεση, αναλαμπές, αρχειακό υλικό και αναπαραστάσεις που δίνουν ζωή σε αυτή τη βαθιά αληθινή ιστορία αγάπης και απώλειας. Η ταινία της Losier αιχμαλωτίζει ακόμη τις μοναδικές προετοιμασίες πίσω απ’τις κάμερες και τις ζωντανές παραστάσεις των συγκροτημάτων τους, ‘Throbbing Gristle’ και ‘Psychic TV’, που χάραξαν νέους δρόμους στη βιομηχανική μουσική, κλείνοντας με τη συγκινητική και σπαρακτική ερωτική μπαλάντα “The Orchids”.

Seven years in the making, the film is a mesmerizing and deeply romantic love story between pioneering musician and performance artist Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and soul mate Lady Jaye. Breaking new ground in its depiction of gender transformation and identity, the film chronicles the physical and spiritual merging of two beings into one. Eschewing the classic talking heads documentary format, Losier's film employs Genesis as the narrator of her own life story. Losier animates this soothing narration with experimental techniques, including the breathless pace of her 16mm moving camera, accelerated and slow motion, rapid montage, over and underexposed images, camera flares, archival material, and reenactments that enliven this heartfelt tale of love and loss. Losier's film also captures unique behind-the-scenes preparations and live performances of their bands that pioneered industrial music, ‘Throbbing Gristle’ and ‘Psychic TV’, closing in perfect form with the evocative and poignant love ballad "The Orchids."
