With events like #GivingTuesday and Lexington’s own Good Giving Challenge, there are multiple opportunities to donate funds to organizations you believe in and support. As an added incentive to help your dollars go further, there are many private organizations that provide “matching dollars” for organizations that qualify. For example, Patagonia provides a 100% match to donations made via their Action Works program for environmental preservation causes. Although Pensacola Park isn’t on the list to receive matching funds from Patagonia, as a 501c3, we are qualified and registered for PayPal’s Giving Fund. The PayPal Giving Fund will provide a 10% match to all funds donated to Pensacola Park through the Paypal website or app. What do your donations to Pensacola Park pay for? The majority of funds are used for matching grants to make neighborhood improvements. For example, we recently applied for a grant from Kentucky Utilities for tree replacement in Pensacola Park. However, for us to receive $5K in grant dollars, we have to provide a $5k match. Some grants require a 50/50 match; others only require a 20/80 match. Other projects Pensacola Park is working on include helping to mitigate storm water flooding at the end of Penmoken Park (and the overflow to Pensacola Dr.) by coordinating storm drain replacement with the city and re-designing the green-space at the end of Penmoken Park to help capture some of the excess run- off. Ultimately, the dollars you donate are used directly to improve your neighborhood. Whether you can donate $5 dollars or $50 dollars—every little bit helps and will be used to leverage more grant dollars for our neighborhood. We greatly appreciate your support!!! MEET: Billy Parker LIVES ON: YEARS IN P.P.: 13 years owned / 7 years lived

The love affair with trains began when he was a little kid. From his rural community of Cecilia, Billy Parker and his family would go to Elizabethtown at Christmastime to visit Santa Claus. There, at the lumber company, was not only the best Santa but a gigantic electric train set, or so it seemed to a kid of four.

His love was rekindled when, as a young man, he got a job at Turfland Mall’s Thornbury’s toy store. In the hobby section, he shared his love of trains with customers and started his own train collection. Over a 45+year period, he has created an exquisite town of electric trains and painstakingly-created buildings. Of course, his love of trains isn’t limited to the miniatures. He remembers the excitement of a family trip on the train from Elizabethtown to Toronto, Canada. He’s especially fond of the biggest trains: for one, the Chesapeake & Ohio’s Alleghenies; they were 16½ feet tall and could pull 160 coal cars. Today, of the 60 built, only two survive. And at the California State Railroad Museum, he had an opportunity to see another of the huge locomotives: the Union Pacific Cab Forward.

Billy wants to share his love of trains with Pensacola Park’s children. Children, accompanied by adults, are invited to experience this fascinating world of miniature trains on Saturday, December 21, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. The address is . Carrying on a tradition from his childhood, each child will receive a Christmas candy cane.
