HISTORIC AMPHIPOLIS AND POTIDAEA. IBy Paul Dickson 1998 held by author. Introduction. Amphipolis and Potidaea are both real places in the northern part of Greece, and both were the sites of major conflicts during the Peloponnesian War. This article recounts what led up to the founding of the cities, and the subsequent conflicts that each city faced. It stops at the Roman period.[2] I make no attempt to reconcile recorded history with events in XWP, but I do note parallels where found.
Analysis of written texts from after the adoption of the new writing system revealed that the people living around the Aegean were speaking distinct but, for the most part, mutually intelligible dialects. The Ionic dialect spoken in Athens and along the coast evolved into modern Greek. Amphipolis and Potidaea might have spoken the same Ionic dialect except for one thing: Potidaea was a settlement from Corinth, where the people, descendants of those fun-loving Dorians, spoke the Doric dialect. Same as Sparta. (Ominous music should begin now).

After a short partnership with his stepson Hieronymus, he published independently at Basle. One of his first independent works was the Demosthenes of 1532. [33] Erasmus wrote the dedicatory Preface and Johann Oporinus added a note to the reader. The romance of Heliodorus was published for the first time by Herwagen in 1534.34 It was unknown in modern times until its discovery among the manuscripts of Matthias Corvinus, king of Hungary, during the sack of Buda in 1526. Our copy bears Herwagen's handwritten dedication to Janus Cornatius (Frankfurt 1535). Printers at Basle often collaborated. Herwagen in 1538 worked with Andreas Hartmann (Karthander=Cratander) and Johann Bebel in publishing an edition of Galen. We have Plutarch's Parallel Lives printed by Hartmann and Bebel.35 Simon Grynaeus dedicated this work to Johann Oporinus. The latter was a professor of Greek at Basle from 1538 and opened his own printing shop in 1544. He remained basically a scholar, however, printing fine editions while malting little profit. His 1549 StobacUS [36] is a reissue of an earlier publication from his shop, as is the Sibylline Oracles of 1555. [37] In the following year he published a volume of Dionysius Periegetes. [38] 0porinus published so frequently, in fact, that he often had to employ the facilities of printers from other cities. Such fervid acti. y of native printers and the constant arrival of fugitive printers from other countries made Germany and Switzerland the leading publishers of Greek texts in the second half of the fifteenth . Before retiring in 1567 Oponnus published an edition of Lycophron with translations by William Canter and Joseph Scaliger. [39] Oporinus shared the labor with Peter Pema, an Italian from Lucca who studied at Basle and began printing there in 1538. We possess one last product of Basle which is rather mysterious. The title page bears the word "Basileae," but the dedication by Johann Birchmann is dated "Cologne, 1542." No publisher is mentioned. [40].

The word ism was first used in 1680 and can be found in the works of such well-known writers as Thomas Carlyle, Julian Huxley and George Bernard Shaw. In the present day, it appears in the title of a standard survey of political thought, Today's ISMS by William Ebenstein, first published in the 1950s, and now in its 11th edition. For the coins excavated in 1928, 1931 and 1934, I have followed Clement's typology in Olynthus 9. In the publication of the coins of 1938 in Olynthus 14, Robinson inexplicably used a different typology. Where there were definite correspondences between the 1938 typology and Clement's, I have used Clement's. Sweet, viscous liquid food, dark golden in colour, produced in the honey sacs of various bees from the nectar of flowers. Flavour and colour are determined by the flowers from which the nectar is gathered. Some of the most commercially desirable honeys are produced from clover by the domestic honeybee. The nectar is ripened into honey by inversion of the major portion of its sucrose sugar into the sugars levulose (fructose) and dextrose (glucose) and by the removal of excess moisture. Honey is stored in the beehive or nest in a honeycomb, a double layer of uniform hexagonal cells constructed of beeswax (secreted by the worker bees) and propolis (a plant resin collected by the workers). Honeycomb is used in winter as food for the larvae and other members of the colony. It is commonly sold by beekeepers as a delicacy, or the wax may be extracted for various purposes.Honey contains about 18 percent water, is water soluble, and may granulate between 50 and 65 F (10 and 18 C). Somewhat acid, it has mild antiseptic properties and has been used in the treatment of burns and lacerations. One of the most easily assimilated foods, it is widely used in baked goods, candies, prepared fruits, cereals, and medicines.Honey was almost the only source of sugar available to the ancients and was valued for its medicinal benefits.
