Σε παρατηρώ με προσοχή. Σκέφτομαι πως σε γέν-

νησε η ανάγκη της φυγής από το παρόν και από τη

θλίψη που κατακλύζει μια πληγωμένη γενιά. Τα

μάτια σου πάντα υγρά και εκφραστικά με εγκλω-

βίζουν. Είσαι συχνά ένα οικείο μου πρόσωπο• η

μάνα, ο αδελφός, μια αγαπημένη φίλη, ένας γείτο-

νας που παίξαμε μαζί το πρώτο μας παιχνίδι.

Φλερτάρεις με το κολάζ. Παίζεις με γράμματα της

αλφαβήτου αφήνοντας υπονοούμενα. Τριγύρω σου

παλιές φωτογραφίες-απόδειξη ενός καλά φυλαγ-

μένου ενσταντανέ που σε σημάδεψε. Παντού σύμ-

βολα προσωπικά δηλώνουν πως πρόλαβες να

απελευθερωθείς από κατεστημένους ρόλους και

να επαναπροσδιορίσεις την σημασία τους.

Δεν είσαι μονάχα ένας νοσταλγός• είσαι ο φύλακας

της μνήμης. Μιας μνήμης - γέφυρας που σε βοηθά

να οδηγηθείς στον προορισμό σου. Σαν την σιτα-

ρήθρα είσαι• το πουλί σ'εκείνον το μύθο που

άκουσα κάποτε. Τότε που δεν υπήρχε γη, παρά

μόνο αέρας και πουλιά που έκαναν κύκλους γύρω

γύρω. Μια μέρα πέθανε ο πατέρας της σιταρήθρας

και δεν ήξεραν τί να κάνουν με το σώμα του καθώς

δεν υπήρχε στεριά πουθενά. Έτσι, εκείνη αποφά-

σισε να θάψει τον πατέρα της στο πίσω μέρος του

κεφαλιού της. Αυτή -λένε- ήταν η αρχή της μνή-

μης. Γιατί πιο πριν κανείς δεν μπορούσε να θυμη-

θεί τίποτε. Μόνο πετούσαν σε κύκλους. Πετούσαν

συνέχεια σε τεράστιους κύκλους.

I carefully observe you. I think you were born by

the need to escape from the present and by the

sorrow that overwhelms this wounded genera-

tion. Your eyes, always moist and expressive, they

hook me. You are always a familiar face; mother,

brother, a beloved friend, my childhood neighbour

I played my first game with. Flirting with collage.

Playing with letters of the alphabet, conveying in-

nuendos. Old photos around you; proof of a well

kept snapshot that marked you. Personal symbols

everywhere state you have managed to liberate

yourself from roles of the establishment and re-

define their meaning.

You are not just a nostalgist; you are the keeper

of memory. A bridge kind of memory that helps

you navigate to your destination. Just as the sky-

lark, you are that bird I heard about in that myth

once upon a time. There was no land then; only

air and birds that flew in circles. One day the sky-

lark’s father passed away, but nobody knew what

to do with the body, as there was no land to bury

it in. So, the skylark decided to bury her father in

the back of her head. And that is how memory

began. Because before that moment nobody

could remember anything. They just flew in cir-

cles. They constantly flew in huge circles.

O Βασίλης Σελιμάς γεννήθηκε το 1983 στο Αγρίνιο. Σπούδασε

ζωγραφική στην Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών του Αριστοτέλειου Πανε-

πιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης(2003-2008). Ζει και εργάζεται στην

Αθήνα.

Vassilis Selimas was born in Agrinio in 1983. He studied painting

at the School Of Fine Arts of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
