Interior Trends

§ Importance of car interior is growing.

§ OEMs upgrading its models by choosing more premium interior materials. More soft-touch materials, dynamic volume growth of material classes.

§ Interior materials and A-surfaces play a vital role to comfort, perceived quality and luxurious appeal.

§ Trend towards light interior colors

§ Multiple migration / substitution effects of interior material classes (upgrading / de-contenting).

§ Growing demand for more sustainable materials and technologies (e.g. water-based, low-emission, green technologies)

§ Leather and coated synthetic trims are the materials of choice for premium car buyers worldwide.

Pre base

Base coat

Three coats in generalStructure of the finish

1. PrebaseLevels the uptake of the leather and is responsable for the adhesion. Many possibilities like adhesion ground, polish ground, buffing ground, impregnation ground

2. Base CoatEssential for the color, unity of the color and for improvement of the physical properties.

3. Top CoatTakes care of the fixation of the leather and for the end look. Also for gloss and grip. Responsable for the good physical properties

Processing of Leather

Some principles

Aniline leather, Pores completely visible, no extra labour on grain side

Semi aniline leather, light pigmentation, pores still open

Covered leather, Surface is covered with resin and pigment

Grained leather, Surface is covered with resin and pigment andthen embossed with a small grain plate, this will give a uniform

grain appearance

Corrected grain leather, natural grain is completely removed. Surface is pigmented heavily with resina and pigment and embossed with a coarse grain plate, this will give also a uniform but artificial grain appearance

Structure of the finish

Top Coat

Today only aqueous top coat systems are used. The film forming of these products are a little different from the NC lacquers.

Processing of Leather: Finishing

Phase 1Water evaporates

Phase 2Particles compress

Phase 3Film forming after plating or embossing

PolyMatte® - how can something “dull” be so exciting?

The challenge■ Matt surfaces are becoming increasingly popular. However,

most matting agents weaken the coating due to its rough structure■ Many finishing technologies are not matt in itself

Our solution■ Polymatte®: a proprietary Stahl polyurethane dispersion technology which

is compatible with water-based, polyurethane coatings. ■ A smooth finishing technology that is matt in itself and gives a warm feel

and pleasant touch■ Exceeds other matting agent technologies in terms of flexibility, scratch

and anti-squeak. Does not polish.

OEM requirements on interior material surfaces

A balancing act tailored to OEMs individual needs

Interior HarmonyQuality consistency of class A surfaces independent of car interior component and substrate used (Leather, PVC, PU,

PVC, TPO, fabrics etc.)

Design / StylingSensorial Experience:

natural appearance, color, low-gloss (not burnish), haptics, softness, smell etc.

Sustainability / EmissionsFogging, VOC, smell, sustainability

criteria

Physical performanceAbrasion, rub fastness, moisture resistance, bally flex, UV resistance, heat resistance, anti-squeak,

anti-soil, anti-stain (dye ingress)

Chemistry-enabled innovations for an enhanced customer-experience.

The desirable “new car smell”:

“Interior Air Quality as emerging differentiating factor to premium OEMs.” Enabler: low VOC technology range for interior materials

The chemical emissions from materials are responsible for it

Premium OEMs: how should leather and “leather-alike” interiors smell?

“VW Leather seats have to smell like leather“

“The best smell to BMW is no smell”

“Neutral smell”

“The only smell is “leather”

“final aim, to avoid any type of smell”

“Minimize all types of smells”

OEM criteria for smell:

Emissions & Smell: highly complex, often subjective topic. Currently “hot” in China.

And demand for surface protection is increasing

Vision: lotus-effect

Soiling: It´s a major pain to all customers in the world

To protect light surfaces against typical stains, we developed Stay Clean.
