Repentance is very important in the life of a Christian. In Math: 4:17 it says (Repent) were the first words of Christ when He began preaching. It is our repentance that God desires, not our re- morse. We sorrow for our sins, but we do so in the joy of God’s mercy. All Orthodox Christians are called to make a special spiritual effort to rediscover their rela- tionship with Christ and get back to the narrow path that leads to salvation. Let’s not try to justify our sinful life if we are not following Christ in the right way. If the Church says we need to fast, then we need to fast. There is no getting around it. If you have a medical problem that would keep anyone from fasting then you do what your Doctor tells you. But if you’re healthy we should all learn to fast, and pray, just like the as- cetic fathers did through their Spiritual journey to Christ. The Orthodox rules for Lenten fasting are the monastic rules. No meat is allowed after Meat fare Sunday, and any eggs or dairy products after Cheese fare Sunday. I would also like to add that no source of entertainment should be allowed dur- ing the Lenten period. These rules exist not as a Pharisaic “burden to hard to bear” Luke 11:46 but as an ideal to be striven for, not as an end in them- selves, but as a means to spiritual perfection crowned in love. There is nothing wrong in teach- ing ourselves and our children the proper way to fast. An athlete does not become an expert in his first exercise or practice. He or she needs to work on that constantly if you want to have good re- sults. Same with fasting, prayer, and meditation, it takes time to learn to adapt to what the church is asking from us to do. In the Monday Vespers of the first week of lent, it states- “Let us fast with a fast pleasing to the Lord. The Lenten Season is a Perfect Opportunityto Rediscover Our Relationship with Christ

CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

Let us begin the Lenten time with delight… letus fast from passions as we fast from food, takingpleasure in the good works of the Spirit, that wemay be granted to see the Holy Passion of Christour God and the Holy Pascha, spiritually rejoic-ing.

The season of great lent is the time of prepara-tion for the feast of the resurrection of Christ.During this period we are reminded to focus onfasting, prayer, meditation, almsgiving, and mostof all on Jesus Christ and our spiritual journeywith Him. It is also a time of reconciliation andrepentance. It is a season of self examination anda time to take spiritual inventory of our inner life.Repentance is very important in the life of aChristian. In Math: 4:17 it says (Repent) were thefirst words of Christ when He began preaching. Itis our repentance that God desires, not our re-morse. We sorrow for our sins, but we do so in thejoy of God’s mercy.

All Orthodox Christians are called to make aspecial spiritual effort to rediscover their rela-tionship with Christ and get back to the narrowpath that leads to salvation. A special word mustbe said about fasting during lent. Let’s not forgetthat (fasting) is an essential element of the Chris-tian Life. Christ fasted and taught men how to fast.So why does our society, try to dilute the wordsof Christ and His practice of fasting. In one of myprevious newsletters, I wrote and I quote (Onceyou take that step to follow Christ then you mustfollow Him with all your heart and soul to the endof your life).

Christ said in John 14:23 –“If a man loves me,he must keep my words”. In this verse there is nocompetitive spirit, there is no personal interpre-tation it simply states, It’s either your (Hot) withChrist or you are (Cold) with Christ. Let’s not tryto justify our sinful life if we are not followingChrist in the right way. If the Church says we needto fast, then we need to fast. There is no gettingaround it. If you have a medical problem thatwould keep anyone from fasting then you do whatyour Doctor tells you. But if you’re healthy we

should all learn to fast, and pray, just like the as-cetic fathers did through their Spiritual journey toChrist.

The Orthodox rules for Lenten fasting are themonastic rules. No meat is allowed after Meat fareSunday, and any eggs or dairy products afterCheese fare Sunday. I would also like to add thatno source of entertainment should be allowed dur-ing the Lenten period. These rules exist not as aPharisaic “burden to hard to bear” Luke 11:46 butas an ideal to be striven for, not as an end in them-selves, but as a means to spiritual perfectioncrowned in love. There is nothing wrong in teach-ing ourselves and our children the proper way tofast.

An athlete does not become an expert in hisfirst exercise or practice. He or she needs to workon that constantly if you want to have good re-sults. Dear Parishioners,On Sunday, February 21, 2016,

the newly elected Parish Counciltook the oath of office. FatherMichael made note that thechurch now has six women repre-senting the Parish Council. I amso proud of the nominatingcommittee’s efforts to make theParish Council more inclusive.

I was humbly re-elected asPresident of the Parish Counciland I want to thank FatherMichael L. Pastrikos for his faithin me and constant encourage-ment. There were many timesthat I did not think that I had the strength to continue on, buteach time I was filled with doubt, God gave me a sign that Ineeded to persevere. Sometimes, the sign was a simple smile ona child’s face or a member of our parish agreeing to help with atask. God gives us signs of hope every day, but do we see them? Many of us take for granted the loaves of bread provided eachSunday, the coffee hour on Sunday, the clean parking lot on Sun-day, the snow removal and grass cutting and our beloved de-ceased Psalti Mr. Rossis’ voice. It is easy to criticize or com-plain regarding the operation of the church, but if it is not man-aged properly, and cared for by its parishioners, no amount ofmoney thrown at it will cure its ills.

Grateful and well aware are all the Parish Council membersof the hours that our tireless and many unseen volunteers dedi-cate to the church. Are the ladies that toll in their homes bakingthe loaves of bread that we enjoy each Sunday, thanked or rec-ognized? Would you know their faces or their names? Do youknow the young man that shows up every Sunday morning clean-ing the church parking lot of broken bottles and discarded trash?Do you know the young man that cleans the snow from thechurch’s steps and keeps the grass well-manicured? Would yourecognize his face or the faces of our many dedicated volunteersthat keep the wheels of our church moving? I pray that youmake an effort to know them because these are the individualsthat fill our pews every Sunday. Yes, it is hard to come to churchwhen you have worked all week long and are staring at loads ofunwashed clothes or shifting through hundreds of unansweredemails. But how are you nourishing your soul? As one GOYAnplainly said, “we should be coming to church to praise God, notso that we can play basketball.” How did we allow ourselves toturn our lives upside down, by putting our jobs, and makingmoney first before our families and our God?

Prayer is the most powerful way for us to communicate withGod. So, pray with me for the new members of the Parish Coun-cil that they will have the wisdom and God’s love to witness andencourage their children, family members, cousins, friends tocome to church each Sunday and share their faith with the lost sothat we may bring more people into the Orthodox religion. Prayfor personal resolve to may stop living a life upside down.

In Christ,Demos Anastasiades, Parish Council President

Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos, Protopresbyter

The Lenten Season is a Perfect Opportunity toRediscover Our Relationship with ChristCONTINUED FROM PAGE 1vice at midnight. The Lenten Season is a perfect opportunityto rediscover our relationship with Christ by receiving theSacrament of Confession. Remember, Repentance is the be-ginning and also the condition of a true Christian life. To be-come more fully human, we have to face our failures, and oursinful actions against our Creator.I conclude with the Vesper Hymn that summarizes our intentand reminds us of our goal in life. “Let us set our joy upon the

season of the fast and prepare ourselves for spiritual combat.Let us purify our soul and cleanse our flesh, and as we fastfrom food, let us abstain also from every passion. Rejoicingin the virtues of the spirit, may we persevere with love, andso be counted worthy to see the solemn Passion of Christ ourGod and with great spiritual gladness to behold His Holy Pass-over (Pascha).May you have a blessed Great Lenten Season and may our

Lord truly open your eyes to your future life in Christ.

HOLY RESURRECTION SERVICE,HOLY PASCHA NIGHT

Pascha is the inauguration of a new age. It reveals the mysteryof the eight day. It is our taste, in this age, of the new and unend-ing day of the Kingdom of God. All Orthodox Christians shouldbe present and participate in the Midnight Paschal Matins and Di-vine Liturgy. (Resurrection Service at midnight). Unless specialcircumstances do not permit, missing this once a year opportunityto witness as an Orthodox is a “No-No”.

It is remarkable that those who have no problem whatsoeverattending New Year’s Eve parties, and drinking, eating, and danc-ing at wedding receptions, yet give excuses that “it is too late, toolong, and too tiresome to attend the Holy Week services and toattend the Midnight Liturgy. Our children should participate too!We think nothing of driving our children late at night while travel-ing on vacations, or making special trips, or going camping.

We don’t think of the time, when we wake up early on Sundaymorning and take our children to Soccer games. But when itcomes to church, we are always with excuses. I would like to knowwhat excuses we are going to give to the Lord on Judgment Day.Coming to church should be a family experience, and we as par-ents should encourage our children to participate. Remember whatJesus said in (Luke 18:16)”Let the little children come to Me, anddo not forbid them.

Our Paschal celebration will continue following the Liturgywith blessing of the Eggs and a Paschal Feast after church. We lookforward to being with all of you for this blessed event in the life ofthe Church celebrating our Lord’s Holy Resurrection.

By Dr. Costas G. FountzoulasThe struggle of the enslaved Greeks against their ruthless rul-

the Annunciation of the Theotokos. Unofficially though, therevolution of the Hellenes against the Ottoman Turks startedone day after the fall of Constantinople on the 29th of May 1453,and continues until today. However, about 20 actual unsuccess-ful uprisings took place before the 1821 revolution that managedto liberate about 25% of the Hellenes residing in the Ottomanempire.

The culturally superior Hellenic world, as represented by theEastern Roman Empire, also known as Byzantine Empire, in1453, fell to the nomadic Asian Turk, and further failed to civi-lize and assimilate this new conqueror as it had previously donewith the Romans. The Moslem Turk adopted the material partof the Byzantines but not its Hellenic intellectual and culturalheritage. Under penalty of death, no Turk could be Christianizedbut many Christians, for their survival, converted to Islam. Thus, the probability that many of today’s Turks are descended fromthe Greeks is high.

During the 400 years of Ottoman occupation complete lackof schooling resulted in illiterate, superstitious and ignorant

Hellenes (especially in their culture, his-tory and language). Interestingly, thesame Turkish policy continues todaywith the Kurds! systematic abduction ofChristian children forming the infamousand cruel Jenisaries, faithful only to Sul-tan? moderate religious freedom wasgranted to those minorities who ac-cepted the Sultan as their despotic leaderand paid their taxes churches wereturned into mosques and icons were de-stroyed (usually by poking out the eyes

of the depicted saints, as it is happening in the conquered northpart of Cyprus today, at the end of the 20th century).

However, the Hellenes living in the occupied Hellas reactedto the oppression, lack of education and freedom by continuousuprisings against their Ottoman overlords (kleftes and armatoloiwere a continuous headache for the Turks) obtaining elementaryeducation in the Hidden Schools (for reading and writing only),formed and covertly operated by the church (at the same timethe Europeans, through the discovery of Hellenic classics, beganthe renaissance, after many centuries of darkness) always beingreminded of their glorious past and the contribution of their an-

cestors to the world by the surrounding ruins of ancient temples, theaters and stadia; thus keeping their historical identity alive be-coming successful international ship owners and merchants(Turks were not very successful as sea merchants, thus bringingthe European ideas of democracyand freedom back to the enslavedHellenes and at the same time in-forming the Europeans of theirstruggle (AGON) for independenceand human dignity—the contribu-tions of the fleet of Spetses, Hydraand Chios were of extreme impor-tance to the success of the revolu-tion).

The struggle of the Hellenes forindependence was coordinatedfrom abroad. The Hellenes ofDiaspora were the strategic and fi-nancial brains behind the revolution(Secret Society of Friends [Filiki Etaeria], Sacred Band [IerosLohos], Ypsilandis, Koraes, Kapodistrias and many othersraised the interest of the European and American intellectualsand Phil-Hellenes (Lord Byron, Dr. Samuel Gridly Howe, andDaniel Webster to name a few).

The Hellenes of mainland Hellas formed military groups andcarried out most of the burden of the fighting against the Otto-man Turks in Hellas; Kolokotronis, Karaiskakis, Papaflessas,Androutsos, Botsaris, Bouboulina, and Miaoulis were some ofthe heroes and military leaders suffered most of the conse-quences of their revolution against the Turks (burning of Chiosand Psara) proved to the enslaved peoples of the Balkans(Aemos peninsula) that the Ottoman army was not invinciblethrough their determination and self-sacrifice (Souli, Alamana,Messologi, Maniaki) they achieved significant victories over theTurks, thus liberating within 2 years Attica, Peloponnese andSterea Ellas, which comprised in 1823 the first free Hellenic Stateforced the allied victory at the battle of Navarino, 1828, thus ac-celerating the demise of the Ottoman Empire.

The Holy Alliance, comprised of Austria, Russia, England,France, and Germany, tried to put an end to the revolution. Therevolting Hellenes had been characterized, mainly by the Aus-trians, as agitators or terrorists using today’s language. How-ever, their fight for independence inspired many Europeans Phil-Hellenes, who gave their life for their righteous struggle. It isworth mentioning that there were Phil-Hellenes from every European nation exceptAustria and Czarist Russia (however, theIeros Lohos (Sacred Band) was formed inRussia).

The struggle of the Hellenes for Indepen-dence eventually resulted in the demise of theOttoman Empire and the liberation of the en-slaved Balkans (Haemus Peninsula) from theOttoman yoke—it is also worth mentioningthat the only people in the Balkans whofought against the Ottoman Turks were theHellenes, something never forgotten by thecontemporary Turks, and the creation of the contemporaryHellas State, an oasis of peace, democracy and stability, not onlyin the Balkans but in the Eastern Mediterranean as well.

✟ SATURDAY OF THE SOULS/æÀÃO™∞µµ∞∆∞

The three Saturday of the Souls will be March 5 and March 12 and 19. The Orthros will begin at 8:45 a.m. and theDivine Liturgy at 9:30 a.m. These Services are for those who have fallen asleep in the Lord. During these three Saturdays, the tradition of the Church is to send the names of your departed family members to be read and prayed for, and to bringkolliva (boiled wheat) to the Church to be blessed. We ask that you write the names clearly and correctly. Please note:All the names will be read for all three Saturdays. Therefore, you do not need to send in your names each Saturday. Onlyone memorial list is needed. We ask that you bring the kolliva into Church before the Divine Liturgy begins, so as not todisrupt the order of the service. May God give rest to your departed family members and may their memory be eternal.∂ʤÙÔ˜ Ù· æ˘¯ÔÛ¿‚‚·Ù· ı· Â›Ó·È ª·ÚÙ›Ô˘ 5 Î·È ª·ÚÙ›Ô˘ 12 Î·È 19. ŸÚıÚÔ˜ ı· ·Ú¯›˙ÂÈ ÛÙȘ 8:45 .Ì.
