Archaeological Museum of Kalymnos

By Chrysopigi R.

Kalymnos is an island near the Carian Coast (Asia Minor). This island

has been inhabited since the Neolithic Age by the Carians. Kalymnos

has found the Carian Writing.

The Archaeological Museum of Kalymnos is at the capital of the island.

In the lobby of the Museum’s chief archaeologist Koutellas Michael

made a brief introduction that informed the visitors, us, about the

long history of Kalymnos spanning a period from the Neolithic Age –

5000p.X to Turkish Holding, i.e. 7,500 years!

In the first room of the museum are finds from the Neolithic to the

Mycenaean period (5300 – 1180/1065 BCC.) from the excavations in

the caves of Kalymnos Santa Barbara Teachers and Choiromantres.

Exposed obsidian tools (calcareous material), used by people of the

Neolithic era, knives and needles, pots, crockery exhibit the most

important Minoan bronze worshiper who has his hand on the

forehead. Displayed particularly large marble Cycladic idol.

There are features exhibits from Milos, two of the Cyclades, which was

marketed as a vase of Troy from the Neolithic era and a lamp of the

Minoan era (Neolithic and Bronze Age) from the Cave Daskalio of

Kalymnos. Also exhibited tools from animal bones, clay pots put wine

(Neolithic) and sacred vessels, also Mycenaean vases found at Troy and

Cyclades.

The next room down has statues of important religious and political

center of ancient Kalymnos, the Temple of Dali (Delion, the Dorians

used a instant of e) Apollo, who was the protector of Kalymnos and

indicates that the large number of offerings found. Sanctuary was a

large space dedicated to the worship the Gods, and was dedicated to

the worship and politics. In sacred spaces were specially modified with

the offerings, statues, vases etc. Those who had no money for making

sacrifices many animals to ask for something orthank him for what he

got, he madesmall figurines gift in the form of animals. Humble,

however, these tributes endured over time and made famous the poor

who devoted. Many belong to the Geometric period, a time of Homer

(8th century p.C). Some have Greek letters on it. The Greeks took the

Phoenician alphabet had only consonants, found the use of vowels and

invented the alphabet(8th century p.C.) we use today. In Mycenaean

times, later, the island was conquered and occupied by the Dorians

who came from Epidaurus.

Homer responds with the name ‘Kalydnai Islands “(Iliad, raps. B, f 676-

677: “They had Nisyros’ island and Krapathon and Cléon and Kos a

very large big city, and Kalydnos islands (= with good drinking water).”

Indeed, together with the surrounding islands (Kalymnos, Pserimos

Leros (maybe) along with Nisyros, Karpathos, Kos and Kasos) took part

in the war against Troy with force thirty ships under the leadership of

Feidippos and Antiphon, sons of Thessaly) with information from the

book by Michael J. Koutella, archaeologist, “Kalymnos, History,

Archaeology and Culture ‘, Kalymnos 2006, pp.18.).

In the original oil pressure room there is a roller mill in which we can

find in the hills in there to put the olives in a row and went to the

press to compress.

Because they could not have animals and necessarily alternated to

move all that weight, took the olives and put them in a large wooden

box, but in the early 20th century, it replaced with other objects. This

stone was with olives and together they made a liquid drink.

Then they put them in bags that were made of goat hair for leave to

pass the juice and make the oil. So taking the bags with drink and

fermented olives when they did this back and forth he went back and

compress, but when it reached a point was not enough to force these

people only hands to compress further, there were other people here

who roamed this vertical axis and grew strength. ALL these are

traditional items used in the old days to ease the lives of mankind.

You can see the place and here in greek the same things we here

describe to you.

Church of the Presentation of the Lord (Ypapanti), Pothia

Kalymnos by Kokona and Irene

In our small island, Kalymnos, at who prospered our

ancestors, our grandparents and parents, the place where

we live today, history is everywhere. The story, however, the

island was written mainly in our churches. Deeply religious

our sea people, raised majestic temples of divine worship,

similar to spogue work, its delivery of his appeal to

literature and the arts.

This church is originally built before the Church of the

Visitation, there was a small chapel dedicated to Saint

George. In 1890 in the district of the hatch, the church of

Saint George was extended and built the present Church of

the Presentation of the Lord, named “Ipapadi”. The district

hatch calls two separate Kalymnians young painters George

Economou and Michael Alachouzos, who will narrate the

magnificent marble temple and the entire church, with

images of great artistic value. Even the Church of the

Visitation is another important example of the art of the

modern artist of our island, Antonis Karafyllakis. It is the

"Presentation of the Lord" that we see across the entrance to

a large size. But the Virgin of the Visitation were written and

11

Page 13: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

two separate important pages in the book of the newer

church of our island.

When first opened in 1894 in the church the new elected

bishop of the Metropolis of Leros, Kalymnos and Astypalea

Anthimos Tsatsos also addressed the church services:

'Blessed Guild of sponge divers” because from the first years

of the establishment of the Church of the Visitation, as the

district was sponge center. The feast of 2 February, was

established as an official celebration dedicated to the

sponge.

As the years go by, in May 1912, the Italians occupied

Dodecanese and installed as conquerors displacing the

Turks.

Quickly find the great fact, that the main basis of national

consciousness of the people is closely interwoven from the

depths of centuries, the Orthodox Eastern Church. This

large obstacle to the design of Italians de-Hellenization of

the islands trying to weaken and neutralize it.

In Kalymnos the Metropolitan Apostolos is facing a hostile

climate of clergy and people. On October 19 1934 the

holyclergy of Kalymnos meet at the Church of the Visitation

and "the Christian conscience and the fear of God," swears

by the altar 'as follows:' denounces the Metropolitan and will

only mention the patriarchal name, will carry sacred struggle

12

Page 14: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

until it found a sound solution from the Patriarchate. If one

of the priests arrested by the authorities will close the

churches and any ritual or sacrament will not be performed

(The archimandrites Anthimos petals and Sophronius

bosom, priests Ioannis Zografos and Savvas Cutter, Saint

Savvas etc.).

The work of the church in society. The church apart from the

religious tasks and performs a social project. Develops

volunteering at parish level in society. Trying to bring people

closer to the church. Also, sick people who have no

relatives, church visits.

Even in poor families provide food and medicine or in

othercases to students who need financial support provides

student grants.

Besides all this, the church today preserves cultural

traditions and customs of the place.

Finally, examples of all the priests and their acts we

strengthen our morale, especially in front of the difficult

times we are experiencing today.

Religion – Churches- Holy Mother of God named Virgin Hosti”

by Kapella Themelina and Mary Zairi (Chrysopigi brought us)

Once upon a time, a night of Easter, many people have gone

deep in the church of the Virgin Mary, located in the harbor

of Rina. The priest chanted “Christ is Risen”. Everyone with

their candles lit in the yard, happy and laughing does the

sign of cross.

Suddenly it was heard a loud voice “e, e, e, Kyra Panagia,

chosou (Virgin Mary, our lady, go deep in the earth).” The

voice came over from the chapel of Agia Irini which is up

high in the mountains on the opposite side. And

immediately, it was like the earth was opened and swallowed

up the church along rammed with them were attending the

holy function.

What had happened? Those years had many pirates. They

went everywhere, especially on small islands, unattended,

and made many disasters. Stole what they found,

slaughtered, they get slaves for their ships. So that evening,

a pirate ship came. Because it could not, arrives in the port

of Rina, which every evening was closed by a thick chain,

moored off. The Pirates got out, went up the mountain and

began to descend toward the Deep. Then Saint Irene saw

them and “Mary” shouted to the ram, to save the Christians

will slaughtered everyone without fail.

The place where the Virgin Mary is built, only dirt and stones

were left. But those who went out of there, not knowing

anything, sometimes voices heard and felt an beautiful scent

of incense.

Once they decided to dig and found underneath the church.

14

Page 16: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

When the church was again up the earth, people gave it the

name “Virgin Hosti” which every summer works as main

church.

A few years ago, a night that will soon hit the bells for the

Resurrection, two shepherds, arrived at the port of Rina with

their boat. They came from Palionisos island and brought

dry cheese and fresh cheese. They did not have time to go

to the town of Potheia and they had to stay there. They said

therefore one to look after the boat and the other to go high

to shares that priest.

Holy Mother of God named "KyraPsili" (very high at the top

of Mountain) by Helen Magkou, b2, 2nd High School of

Kalymnos (Chrysopigi brought us the information)

Always down of the mountain at the island people could see

at the old days up there a light shimmering. The thought

was that it was a star in the sky. One day a goat that had

escaped from the herd, it returned to the muzzle wet. One,

two times, three times. Then the shepherd came in the wake

and found a cave where the rock came from water. In one

corner stood a smiling Madonna. It was the icon of Panagia

Kyra – Psili. He picked it up and went down to the priest. He

put it in the Church. The morning was not in the position

they had put it. They went up the mountain and found it at

the same position that the shepherd had found it. This was

done three times. Then they realized that Holy Virgin,

Mother of God wanted to stay there. So they decided to build

in that part a church. The difficulty, however, was how to

carry up there materials. Then a monk in his dream saw a

woman who suggested the place to dig to find sand and

lime. Really dug into that part and found materials like saw

in his dream the monk. This solved the problem and built

the church of Kyra – Psili who since became the most

pilgrimage place of the island.

The Church of Saint John the Theologian in Kalymnos

by Alexander K.

The church of Saint Theologian built in 1848, but in 1932

the parishioners of the church decided to expand their

church. Because many people had moved to Kalymnos from

above islands (ie Patmos) and had to be a church to serve

the needs of the parishioners. Leading to demolish a part of

to construct new kommati.I church is built of stone and

generally these materials came from Kalymnos. The costs of

construction came from donations Olympitou families

Theodore Anfredou, Zervos (Zarafti) and family Nikita and

Maria Cretan whose specific donation chrisimopoiithike for

the creation of the belfry and from Parishioners of the

church who already contribute with icons that are present in

the church today. The church was painted mainly by

Anthony Karafyllaki who made the temple, the center of the

church, the apostles, and the Panntokratora Angels .Omos in

the 90 'a young painter from Mount Athos painted the sides

of the main temple and the Sanctuary . I.. Fillipotis created

the gateway to the Sanctuary and the staircase which leads

to the site to which recites the Gospel. Originally the church

was built in place before the cemetery, due to the needs, but

the parishioners decided to transfer the bones and build the

temple.

Traditional Kalymnian House

Comments on a video about

The video for the Kalymnian house describes the wedding traditions that had

Kalymnos and the costumes of Kalymnos women’s. It states the following

traditions:

Firstly, the day of the wedding the friends of the groom went and took him from his

house accompanied by violin, to take him to church. Secondly, the mother when

entering the new house of her son and the bride of, scatter on the floor nuts and

shouted good luck to break the matchmaking (she did this only when her parents

were living).

Moreover, for a time not planted nor alive nurtured, because they wanted the power

of fruiting go to the couple to make a lot of children. In addition, when a couple

marry, behind wreaths a daughter, with alive parents, cut a piece climate and put

it there which had three knots, symbolized the Holy Trinity. The climate placed

behind the wreaths, as I mentioned before and hold up with white thread .

Now as far as women's clothing, daughters whose mothers of small wore them

kerchiefs (google it) which was silk and hand painted. The wedding day, the

kerchiefs was opened, for the womans to show the gold jewelery and the them

necks . Another special details are, that the kerchiefs had two views , one side

had the eagle that symbolized freedom and this was woren from free daughters,

unlike the other side had a wreath with two birds which symbolize marriage, so

25

Page 27: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

locals could understand if a girl was available or not .

Traditional Life/Ancient Occupations- Chrysopigi

Occupations on Ancient Times :

Klaofores, the women were picked up branches for fire

Many times as I throw my look at our mountain of the slopes, I

suppose that even seeing women “klaofores” (they carry on their

soulders bradches of trees for fire), loaded head the bundle branches.

Maybe because I always liked watching them from afar, since they were

shown on top and quinoa slowly, first as an undetermined volume that

moved and only as approaching the low edges of mountain of the

human figure.

One of the heavier work of the old cover was to go for collecting

branches for fire and oven. Heavy work, however, necessary and close

to homemade own bakery, with branches illuminated and warmed the

humble house in winter frost. In older times, many were those who

went on the branches. And if they are not going, but were

experiencing, and has remained as a beautiful memory.

This work later was left in the parliamentary bundle branches to

klaofores, who were doing for occupation: to sell the bundle branches,

27

Page 29: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

to feed their family as it was miserable or to study children and

siblings, can they issue scientists with their heavy toil.

Slowly the war, and he was lost, especially since each housewife

ceased to knead and bake bread of whole the week.

But even all of our generation remember the klaofores to descend the

slopes of the mountains, with huge bundles branches in the head and

then cross the narrow streets of the village and of Pothia to go to put

away in the house RAPID ordered .

From afar I imagine stand up similar to ancient statues, only with his

head slightly bowed, he lifted that weight wholeness, but with firmer

body and bouncy step, small, jumped, because it was imposed by the

pressure of the bale from above …

No longer were like women, they look like little goddesses, fairies of

the mountain, priestesses they were far from their goal, but me

purpose, to keep unquenchable fire of their home, sacrificing sleep

and paying it disproportionate to their wives forces.

Filled our mountains of twigs, but to find large branches are klaofores

be they issue whole sheaf had to go away, two or three hours away

many times, climbing peaks, descending ravines to succeed virgins

kalymniestopous with thyme a hug each and chinopodia.

Always they were started for the branches, with three or four or more,

never a nun of. How to start the nun, it was still night, three or four

Traditional life – Kalymnos Greece – Dances – Chrysopigi

The dance is danced in various events such as weddings, feasts and festivals and is much

loved. It is purely a male dance. It is a representation of the "gripped" mechanic, that the

diver who was diving with scuba and caught, having suffered the disease of divers was

hemiparalysis.

This dance began almost 50 years ago, but the roots of the actual dance with a hero truly

caught mechanical, dating from the end of last century. Then we had the first engineers

and first "stiff". The complete ignorance of diving rules, was the reason there were many

unfortunate victims of this type, that is "flat" and "caught." According to history, the

engineer vibrates, falls down and gets up again to dance accompanied by special melody

of engineering inspired by sfoungaradiki bravery and valor.

“The old man and the old woman,” by Themelina Kapella and

Mary Zairi

Once upon a time there was an old man and an old woman.

They lived on their own because they had no children. But

they was loved and looked after one another.

One day the old man, who was going there, he found a

metal (a coin of small value). Immediately he turned back.

Once she saw the old man she worried.

– What happened to my old man and came back so quickly?

Are you sick?

– No, says the old man, but I found a metal I came to see

what we will do with it!.

In little old lady says: – I found it! We can buy candies to a

little sweetened our means.

The old man did not liked this idea, he said.

Come to your good, wife. Beautiful are the candies, but stick

to the teeth. I say give nuts. He did it well and tell the old

lady says:

– What’s wrong with my husband? Dont think that half the

nuts are shells? Leave that many of them are deaf.

The old man thought it again. Well, then find something that

does not have shells and will not stick to your teeth.

Where were thinking tossed over with the old forums and

says: I found it, I found it.

– What you found so again? Let’s see.

30

Page 32: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

– I found it. We will buycollard greens! what she

remembered!

He did not filled his eyes of the collard greens, but to say

and the right skewed, the collard greens were not shells and

neither stick to the teeth.

So they bought collard greens, they cooked the leaves, they

put plenty olive oil of Kalymnos and they ate fine.

Not even the poster liquid of collard greens go of the hurt.

They put on it olive oil, lemon and salt and drank it and they

were very nice.

With the left over made and a little bed from leaves and

brunches. Goes over the old man, but not the cot sank. Goes

over the old lady is not sunk. Tucked and a mouse, and

tsoup, going under the cot!

It was offered by Chrysopigi. We thank her very much.

Moral and habits of Easter’s Day (Pascha) of Kalymnos     Many customs are separate on the

island of Kalymnos, but the traditions of

Easter is very like improvised explosives

Sunday, the “Moore”, baked in

traditional ovens. Good Friday is a procession of all the epitaph and women

Easter is the greatest feast of orthodoxy, which celebrates the resurrection of

Jesus Christ after the great week of passions. The customs of Easter is one of

the most beautiful traditions of Greece. The red eggs break on Holy Saturday,

the burning of Judas, the altar carrying the Holy Light of the church at home,

the procession of the Epitaph on the streets and fireworks to welcome the

resurrection are some of the most famous Easter customs.

There are other traditions of Easter is not so well known as the sacrament of

In our country every place boasts of some customs, traditions Halloween,

Christmas, wedding etc. This island is known for the Passover. Anyone who

THE LAMB

Previously, the process of Easter from

the middle of Lent with the purchase of

lamb. The Paschal lamb was a big deal for

the kids. In Pothia and the Village – the

villages had their own lambs – parents had

to buy lamb for children. Sometimes prefer

lambs from Kos who were more tame, since the Kalymnos was wild, because

the greatest joy of the children were learning the lamb to follow them. The first

concern of the children just acquired lambs was to weave the “food”, a round

ornament the forehead of lamb made of colorful wool yarn. When returning

from the school, their greatest pleasure was to make the lamb in the pasture,

usually in the company of other children.

Tried the first time that they received to do everything possible to follow them

without a rope and it was a great pleasure when you succeed. The hours were

small lamb to school expecting them tied to railings in the street or the garden.

Of course it was great sadness when their children slaughtered companion

with whom she had spent wonderful moments. Today most families buy their

slain lamb and enjoyable moments of these children lacking. The lamb is

slaughtered the morning of Holy Saturday with the blood of the cross to make

a door.

LAZARUS

The last two Saturdays of Lent they say “Lazarus.” The first Saturday is the

poor man Lazarus and the second, that is to say before Sunday the Vaya is

the “rich Lazarus”. For the poor Lazarus some doubts about the report, but the

wealthy are clearly mentioned that the friend of Christ, the brother of Martha

and Mary.

Both Saturdays Lazarus housewives make lazarakia. Lazarakia made with

flour, sugar, spices and tahini. It filled in the abdomen with raisins and have

the form dead with crossed hands. Symbolize shrouded Lazarus who

resurrected Christ. Lazarakia other hand is the food of the great weeks on the

other housewives give their children who will sing the carols.

Easter for Greece is the most important

feast of the year. But especially in our

island, Kalymnos, celebrating with many

local Easter customs come from ancient

times and kept up to date.

Shortly before the coming Megalovdomada housewives all one after the other

starting to whitewash and paint their houses, stairs and roads and so all the

neighborhoods are clean. Most families buy them live the Easter lamb, which

they grow in their gardens. Mums with children weave a ball of colored yarn

tassels which we call and hang in our neck of lamb.

Saturday of Lazarus getting all children in neighborhoods and say the song

“Lazarus.” On the same day the housewives knead and bake Lazarakos

(Lenten buns with the human form) and buns together with Avgoulas.

On the evening of Holy Thursday all, go to the church to watch the crucifixion

of Christ. Finishing operation, the women remain in the Church and begin the

lamentations of a crucifix which lasts almost all night. The next day at noon

after the deposition of the island’s cemeteries are filled with people where

everyone goes flowers on the graves of its own.

Already in each parish and one hanging Judas made of straw which we burn

Sunday of Easter.

To the great Friday evening young girls and women dress myrrhbearers and

sing in the church square, accompanied by the praise of myrrhbearers and

parishioners. After we finish with the procession of the Epitaph go to church

and pass beneath the epitaph.

    The big Saturday morning men

slaughtering lambs so that housewives

to clean and prepare them to bake in

the oven in the afternoon. At 12:00

noon, many people go to the main

square to watch the spectacle with

dynamites are beginning to fall from

the mountains once the bell rang for the first Resurrection. Afternoon

collected in previous days. Once we put in enough warm clay containing our

lambs, “berry” and close the oven door with stones and mud.

On the evening of Holy Saturday everyone goes to church to receive the Holy

Light and hear “Christ is risen.” After the church gathered in homes and

families eat the Easter podokefalo. On the morning of Easter Sunday in the

ovens going and get our berry. The evening is the evening prayer of Love,

where he told the priests the Bible in 7 languages and distributes Despot red

eggs.

In the evening we all go to the square to watch the show with their dynamite

dropped simultaneously from the two mountains.

For me and for many others, the traditions of Kalymnos Easter stand out from

CLIMBING ON KALYMNOS

Climbing in Kalymnos began in 1997 when an Italian climber discovered and opened its first 40

tracks. Later the municipality laid the foundations for how to open routes, which nowadays is 2,500

and each route has its own equipment, around 10-15 gait. Also it worths mentioning that Kalymnos

has emerged as the first world climbing determination.

THE CONTRIBUTION OF CLIMBING THE ISLAND OF KALYMNOS

Below we will see how it has helped finance climbing the island. Climbers reinforce the locals when

you dine in our restaurants when staying in our hotels when they buy their basic needs and when

they go out for walks. Finally, our island is advertised by multinational companies such as North Face

and other miscellaneous. So the island is widely known throughout the world, so every year we have

more and more profits from climbers according to recent studies.

49

Page 51: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

As part of t he presentation of our country web

project etwinning, our European School Journal, my town, we visited the

Maritime Museum of Kalymnos, where Aspropotamitis Mr. John and Mr.

Drossos guided us with great eagerness and told us about the history of

diving. There is video of a tour that just able to overcome technical difficulties

will move in our newspaper.

According to the tour, the first name of Kalymnos was Kalydnai or Kalydna

(because it was cool, good water). Later in describing travelers and find the

old maps and Kalymnos. Has an area of 109 square kilometers and is located

183 nautical miles from Piraeus. Its capital is Kalymnos that the locals called

longs (= desirable). It is a city with a lively commercial traffic island and

intense color. Opposite the village “Myrties” 700 meters is the small island

Kalymnos, which was united with Kalymnos as in 535 AD by a powerful

earthquake which was excised from Kalymnos. Today they live only a few

fishermen. During the Turkish Kalymnos sponge had special permission and

fees.

50

Page 52: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

Aristotle describes the sponge as “zooid” no plant has no roots. Are

microorganisms with circulatory system, membrane

and water quality makes them grow and grow properly. The sponge feeds on

zooplankton and microorganisms. It takes five years to become a small

sponge, like a fist. There are 5000 species of sponges. The five types on the

market, such as Melates the Elephant Ears, the seal, the ear of the elephant.

When clicked the fish away to leave the film and the adhesive containing the

sponge and then washed and spread on deck to dry. After entering bagged

and stored in the hold. Every fifteen days taken off and eliazan to prevent

molding.

In 1850, at the end of the Industrial

Revolution in natural sponge was valuable for its antiseptic properties and

necessary in Medicine, Pharmaceuticals, Cosmetics, Paint (cleaning brush) in

the manufacture porcelain, ceramic in (treatment) and wanted to markets

leading to Kalymnos ploutisei and gain edge commercial and cultural. In 1986,

however, observed for the first time the disease sponges. The water was

contaminated, possibly from contamination of Chernobyl and sponge rips and

become unfit for the use intended. This occurred in the area of crisis and

Kalymnos sponge lost its resource wealth. Other causes for the disease of

spon ges is

suspected that the greenhouse effect, the undersea earthquakes and

sulphurous gases released from the sea floor.

The boats that fished sponges consisted of Bratsera the main vessel with

storage and supplies and small ships that came and saying “achtarmades”

because it was all scrambled aboard, diving equipment, gear, etc. They left

and went around Easter in October. Main destination of North Africa. Sextants

had to watch their progress based on the stars after the Polaris always points

north. Famous diver was John Knee, has been fishing in California, USA,

Tarpon Springs, inhabited today Kalymnians a great community Kalymnos

and also dealing with the sponge.

In the mid 1860’s one Frenchman, Auble brought in the Southern Sporades an

unknown diving equipment, scuba. It was over 50 pounds the outfit they wore.

It consists of a dress and

the diving suit, a bronze helmet, which was connected with a cord or rope that

was tied to the diver and the machine that gave oxygen and called taps. The

Diving Bell and screw were entered from uniform in uniform. Had the role,

“mantzaroli” = timer count where the diver how much remained below the

seabed. Should be left alone under 40 minutes and then he went up required.

53

Page 55: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

There was a machine that was connecting the diver to the boat with a long

cord which channeled air. The breath after 40 minutes was dangerous,

nitrogen filled lung and paralyzed, Escazu. But when he found the “engineer”

the diver dives, very sponge, cut the air to stay longer to gather more sponges

or paralyzed and die when brought to the surface. From 18641970 we had

10,000 casualties, 20,000 disabled and 1012% mortality. Described in the

book “The saga of the sponge.” Reports also find and ‘Kalymnos Chronicles “.

Divers ate only once a day after fishing of sponges in squalid conditions, only

feeding on crabs, boiled and roasted meat to hold much and rice without

vegetables. When they were been eaten by sharks, or when they died from

the plague of divers they were benn burried in unknown graves. They were

been fallen at the sea or at small islands unknown buried them. In place of

their  tombs, back at their homes, were containing the personal objects. Other

risks of phishing sponge was a substance on the sponge, the radian causing

dermatitis and pains. The captains who insisted lot of money forced the

fishermen to dive for sponges necessarily more than they ought to, there was

true feature the ratio “or sponge or ass!”

The residents took scuba apprehensive. In

violence tried to prevent its use. They stopped using it for three years. Despite

the uprising of the people, however, were introduced in diving suits  to work of

fishing spongues restricting the naked divers and other traditional ways of

fishing. Towards the end of the century, annual production reached larger

sizes. Nevertheless, many people lost their lives.

Charles was Flegel and Greece of Vilia came from Lithuania. He came to

Greece in 1892 to learn the Aegean islands. When he arrived in Kalymnos, he

55

Page 57: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

saw everywhere cripples, widows, orphans. So he decided to settle in

Kalymnos and devote his life to the struggle for the liberation of the sponge

from the curse of diving and finally made it!

In 1922 the system was adopted Fernez. The air was given carefully and

safely and there were fewer accidents.

To protect divers in Greece today are three decompression chambers, where,

with the help of oxygen paralyzed when the diver enters the chamber and is

well again. Kalymnos in Vouvaleio Hospital, there is one active

decompression chamber of the three.

The climb is now within eight proposed for the Olympic Games of 2020 and for

people with disabilities.

Kalymnos is the first destination in the world for sport climbing, sport, leisure

and recreational climbing. It has two thousand paths and sixtyfour safe areas

nearby climbing rocks morphology with stalactites and spectacular views.

In 1997   ʹthe Italian Andrea Duvall discovers and reveals Kalymnos as the

most appropriate to begin to deal with someone climbing.

Conditions for climbing

Climbing should always be two people together with special equipment,

special power cord that is, to have a smooth decline, climbing two rings and a

special area, special shoes and helmet anyway. The supplies have been

tested before being placed on the market and thus ensure a climber safety

and strength needed to keep the area the rope with the help of rings, because

when the climber falls tripled the weight of (a person who weighs 50 kg in fall it

weighs 150 pounds). The second person accompanying the climber

necessarily have “purse” or safety mechanism and stays on the ground.

60

Page 62: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

How the climber chooses where to go?

There Kalymnos organized fields and levels, so the climber can pick and

choose their targets.

The person who stays on the ground, the insurer looks to be all right, holds

the locking mechanism, and he wears a belt and tied with a knot eights.

Traditional Architecture – Kalymnos Greece -

The folk architecture of Kalymnos. Writer : Fani Reisi, architect -

engineer – An article brought by Chrysopigi R.

This season has witnessed a shift of societies towards the

traditions, manners and customs, and the keen interest in the

traditions of other peoples. We see, for example, revive forgotten

customs. Local music know worldwide success. Organise festival

with exotic cuisines. And all this surrounded with a newfound

glory.

Much less is unfortunately the interest that we pay as a society to

protect our traditional architecture, even though it is a key piece of

cultural heritage. This gap will try to cover today taking a first look

at our local architecture. Is it a first class opportunity to meet, or

better, to remember, our social and

cultural roots, our habits and traditions? Why examining a

settlement created without presidential decrees, building

conditions, engineers and urban, with only through a few meters of

land, the local ingredients but with much wisdom and love, then we

learn the history of this place. All other historical monuments of

64

Page 66: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

past times preserved in the vast majority of public buildings, can

only tell a story from the side of the powerful, that which prevailed.

If you think about one, the traditional villages are the only ones

that knowing them from within, we unfold the popular culture that

created them.

Chora or Chorio, Main Village of Kalymnos

In Kalymnos particularly, only in 1660, by reducing piracy begins to

be built at the foot of the Castle the new settlement of the village.

Until then, residents living in the castle. Outside, there are only

cultivable land for oil, wheat and honey. The land belongs to the

community and individual properties are limited to trees and plants

(known until today spores). The sponge is already a serious

resource in the economic life of the island In the second half of the

18th century, the development of the settlement of the village form

the neighborhoods that reveal and socioeconomic stratification.

Large houses in Thenia, which is the neighborhood of dignitaries

65

and captains, small houses in Argatza, which is the neighborhood

of sponguedivers.

Pothia - Port of Kalymnos

The late 18th century. characterized by economic prosperity

derived from trade oil, honey, sponge and Kontrabando. Sample

this boom is the construction of Panagia Village. Also, a sample of

the boom is the taxation of the carpenter professions of mason and

several other professions concerned by the Turks. Then, the

construction of the village of Chora and the same period is the

distribution of communal land with imbalance in favor of large

families.

Around 1860 begins the colonization of Pothia. The first Hamlets

and villages areas are created on two opposite sides of the harbor,

the Marasia. There probably were installed auxiliary workers in

sponge diving, who moved from the village in search of cheaper

land and housing that is closer to the workplace. Wealthier families

who move from village installed Choni and Amoudara, and form of

the settlements start acquiring neoclassical features a fashion that

comes from European capitals by traffickers of the sponge that

have members located in Europe.

66

Page 68: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

But the middle class, who lives in the valley lying between Marasia,

copy the forms of the mansions, but more simplified. The Marasia,

still inhabited by the working classes, begin to imitate Ms. these

neoclassical forms, most often simply adding a pitched tiled roof

and gable.

During the Italian occupation, the port is the center of gravity of

economic and social life of the country. Draw roads and the

settlement developed along the road. Consolidate the country

villages and Pothia and extending to rural villages Panormo and

Myrties.

We can safely say that until the mid-19th century. The local

architecture evolve hand in accordance with the needs and

economic growth, but remains without substantial influence from

the architectural currents anaptyssontoai in Europe. We can talk,

that is, to folk architecture of Kalymnos.

Traditional Kalymnian House

In one room, the "Kanja", is the oldest type of Kalymnian house. A

low-ceilinged stone-oblong room, with dimensions 3,50-4,00m.

the narrow side and 7,00-8,00m the long side. On one side there is

the bed and in the other the “paratsa”, the fire place where they

were cooking. The door in the middle of the building. It usually had

two small windows located or both on the obverse or the main and

one on the side. In a window located at the “paratsa” and the other

on the krevattos (=large bed for whole family).

This ensured the correct lighting and ventilation of both while the

home protected from the winter cold. The space was long and

narrow, because the local wooden beamed that must accommodate

it was scarce and of poor quality.

Bed place = Krevatos

“Paratsa”, fire place

So it had to bridge the shortest possible opening. Above the

wooden beams to cover the gaps between them, placed reeds and

later boards, a layer of shrubs, algae and finally patelia

waterproofing house.

Within this small space, they lived in a wonderful way the

multitudinous Kalymnian family. Functionality and economy of

space impresses the visitor today. The bed, which at night is the

bedroom of the couple and all the minor members of the family

are also closet "good clothes. day is sitting, and storage space for

makeshift mattresses and blankets. Under the krevatto was the

pantry. The warehouse had oil, honey, pots of almonds and figs

and everything else can collect the Family to pull out the winter. For

69

Page 71: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

the little leftover from the pot of the day there "refrigerator". A

small hole above the door usually is open all summer and keeps

cool in the basket hanging from the ceiling, where the dish of the

day is saved. The remaining space, which in winter is the kitchen,

dining and living days and sleeping nights for adult family

members, has a built-in closet for clothes, paratsa to cook winter

warms the house and dresser for diners and suppers.

In spring and summer, things are more spacious. All things are in

the courtyard: cooking, washing dishes and laundry by geitonema

and sleep are out. That is why the courtyards is meticulously clean

and whitewashed. It is also clean and whitewashed and the streets

and small squares created between the houses.

Why is the social life of the neighborhood comes from the confines

of the property and is spread all over the space. Private and public

become one, not only utilitarian but also aesthetic and their care is

a matter of every housewife in the section of the road set. Even

today, in some neighborhoods of the village, one finds it difficult to

distinguish where the court ends and where begins the public

space.

The colors that dominate are the natural colors of stone and wood

and lime. The intensity of the sun and shadow and indigo in the

lime gives the houses all other shades and tones.

The houses with the passage of time and economic rise, grow. They

become two floors. Originally, the ground floor is a low ceiling and

the floor is a few centimeters below the elevation of the courtyard.

The basement has exactly the same function as the “Katza”. It is the

kitchen, the living room and the family bedroom. Upstairs leads an

external staircase. Many times, below this staircase is auxiliary

room, the cistern. Shortly afterwards, the house becomes a normal

two-storey and the space under the stairs, if any, is the kitchen of

the house. Grows the need for concentration inside the house,

70

Page 72: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

grow respectively and the living room, without this meaning that

incapacitated the courtyard as a place of assembly of relatives and

friends.

Two floor Kalymnian House

Upstairs is the krevvatos where sleeps the couple or the guests,

and the official site, the living room. This area, landscaped and

decorated with the best furniture and embroidery, still closed

waiting for the great events that occur in the family ....

The great pleasure and death. Then we will open wide to friends

and relatives of the house, come spontaneously, without an

invitation to participate in the joy or sorrow. The beds are

separated from the remaining space with chat, a light wooden

structure that stands out visually only, space sleep from the rest.

The variant of the pure two-storey with external staircase has

begun to accept the influences of neoclassicism in the form and the

ground plan of the building. The face becomes more strict as to the

symmetry axis and the decor gientai more elaborate. Downstairs is

the kitchen and living room, and floor, the sleeping area.

71

Page 73: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

The introduction of wood from Greece and Europe abolishes the

binding of the rectangular building. It may now be more square and

bigger. The roof tiles, four-sided or pitched, replacing the roof.

The marble decorates the sides. Through separate the uses. The

kitchen, the living room and bedrooms are now separate rooms.

Among them there is a wide corridor for the first time the latrine is

built together with the house. The escalation of the privacy of the

building follows the social status of its owner. The staircase is

internal. The courtyard perimantronetai and differentiation between

private and dimiosiou space is now clear. Along with the new

format display u new colors. The green and ocher tones, the more

yellow to the finest «redcouloured soil” make social contrast and

color.

But when later the Italian conqueror prohibits blue white paint in

homes for antiaircraft protection, then white and indigo Kalymnian

represent the colors of the Greek flag. A peculiar "color war"

begins. The Italians impose vyssali (brick color), the Favatata

(ocher) and the Patelles (violet) to the sides of the houses.

Kalymnians, at evening the whitewashing to have a better target the

enemies of their conquerors. In the morning the Italians repaint

with lampblack, again from the beginning. This intense alternation

of dark and bright colors, the coats of lime which were not

removed but joined laminated, shuffle and other colors together.

They broke new color gradations, more hazy, who managed to beat

only the opaque plastic color that came to Kalymnos after its union

with Greece. This familiarity with the many different and vibrant

colors and use them according to the temperament of the owner of

the house, was until recently the strong differentiation of Kalymnos

from neighboring islands.

72

Page 74: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

Newclassic Houses in Kalymnos

The seemingly simple, humble form of the building is far from

simplistic. It is the expression of the need of lighting and

ventilation of the house, and the proper ratio of "full and empty" as

we often say in architecture. The ratio that is between the walls and

doors and windows, to be such that the building is not only, but

also shows the fixed strong shelter family fort. The axis of

symmetry exists, but the placement of the frames are not

necessarily symmetrical, because it is determined by the rules of

function and aesthetics. The result anyway is the simple, austere

Doric form of the building. Its aesthetic was admired by all

researchers - thinkers of modern architecture but if everyone

recognize the innate talent of the craftsman in shaping harmonious

appearance, the game of volumes caressing and attracts the eye,

we can not but admire the extensive use specialized knowledge

and techniques.

The formula of the golden section (m: M = M (M + m), in a nutshell,

is the one who

73

Page 75: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

gives us the relative length and width featuring classical harmonic

ratio. It is the rule

that extensive use of the Parthenon is one of the reasons that make

him unique

monument in world history of architecture. The implementation of

the rule of the

golden mean we will find the proportions of the windows in most

homes this time lost

when the requirements of neoclassicism Fashion require different

ratios.

Folk wisdom, forgotten knowledge or absolute sense of

harmonious proportions?

Either way, understanding the aesthetic value of such rules, the

selection of their use and the correct application inevitably causes

admiration and our respect. Our folk architecture is the result of

practical problems and solutions provided over the centuries apmi

experts, but with the wisdom of our techniques taught today

relearn by qualified scientists. The new technologies we relearn the

necessity of economy of space material and energy ... respect for

the environment.

But we still have at least the application in front of our eyes. An

application that

endangered because it covers our current housing needs and that

we must

74

Page 76: Kalymnos! its beauties and culture offer!

preserve what is left of it.

But if memories are not enough to make us to respect and preserve

the homes of grandparents and our grandmothers, could we do it

knowing that the ergonomics, technical and art coexist

harmoniously in them? If we are happy with the buildings by which

we replace, then why our eye is magnetized by the other, the small?

We can selectively sensitizes the preservation of our neoclassical or

even the buildings of the Italian occupation and to break down the

monuments of our local culture? The tourist development of high

aesthetics of traditional settlements has so far been the reason for

the conservation of some of them. Today, more than ever, need to

appreciate and unique historical and cultural value, to salvage what

was left and to others.
