Geometric Art is a period of greek Art, characterized largely by geometric patterns in vase

painting. It flourished from 1100 BC to 750 BC. Its centre was in

Athens and it was diffused among the trading cities of the

Aegean.

Page 7: Geometry in Art

Vases in the Geometric style are characterized by several horizontal bands that cover the entire vase.

Between these lines the geometric artist used a number of other

decorative patterns such as the zig-zag, the triangle, the circle and

the meander. Besides abstract elements, painters of this era introduced also depictions of

humans and animals.

The students of the fifth grade imitated artists of the Geometric Art and painted amphorae with

geometric patterns.

Mosaics in ancient Greece and during

Byzantine years

Page 11: Geometry in Art

Mosaic is the art of creating images with an assemblage of

small, flat, roughly square, pieces of colored glass, stone, or other materials, known as

tesserae. It is a technique of decorative

art or interior decoration.

Page 12: Geometry in Art

The history of mosaic goes back some 4,000 years or more, with

the use of terracotta cones pushed into a background to give decoration. By the 8th century BC, there were pebble floors, using

different coloured stones to create patterns. These tended to be unstructured decoration. The Greeks, in the 4th century BC,

raised the pebble technique to an Art form, with precise geometric patterns and detailed scenes of

people and animals.

Page 15: Geometry in Art

Folk Art is characterized by the spontaneous expression of a people through Art. The greek Folk Art has its roots in Byzantium. Its pieces of art are creations of people who hasn't been taught any kind of Art form in schools, but they have gained experience near craftsmen. Characteristic features of Folk Art is the combination of usability and aesthetics.

Page 16: Geometry in Art

The creations of Folk Art are an expression of the collective aesthetic of a particular society and not only the personal aesthetic of each creator. It is a conservative art, very close to tradition. It uses geometric patterns and scenes from nature.

The students of the second grade became weavers and created their own works of art with threads, yarns and improvised looms.

Students and teachers enjoyed very much the activities concerning Maths and Art.
