Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom

• All Christians are to teach and confront one another nouthetically

Rom 15:14 I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, complete in knowledge and competent to instruct one another.

• Paul was convinced the Roman disciples were able to nouthetically confront one another

1 Thess 5:12-14 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. 14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.

• Both the leader/pastor and each other are involved in the work of nouthetic counseling

Col 1:28-29 We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.

• The goal of nouthetic confrontation is to present others perfect in Christ

Acts 20:31 So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.

• It was Paul’s practice to nouthetically confront

In what manner?In what manner?

1 Cor 4:14 I am not writing this to shame you, but to warn you, as my dear children.

• The goal of nouthetic confrontation is never to shame

2 Thess 3:14-15 If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of him. Do not associate with him, in order that he may feel ashamed. Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.

• We confront nouthetically as a brother, not as an enemy

To Whom?To Whom?

Eph 6:4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

• We must teach and nouthetically confront our children with God’s will

Titus 3:10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him.

• We confront even a divisive person nouthetically

Teaching [didasko] doesn’t imply any problem, but admonish [noutheteo] always implies a problem or obstacle to overcome

Nouthetic counseling presupposes the need for change in the one confronted. It is to effect personality & behavioral change

This training is done in a verbal manner The purpose and motive is to benefit the other

ScriptureScripture

2 Tim 3:16-17 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

• The bible is a tool that is useful for all the goals of nouthetic confrontation

2 Tim 4:2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-with great patience and careful instruction.

• Timothy was directed to use the scriptures nouthetically, so nouthetic confrontation is scriptural confrontation

The 3 aspects of counseling The 3 aspects of counseling

• The three ideas found in the word nouthesia are confrontation, concern, and change.

1. The counselee has problems resulting from sin that must be resolved God’s way.

2. These problems must be resolved by verbal confrontation using the Scriptures.

3. The resolution must be done out of love for the counselee to help him love God and enjoy Him in his life.

• To put it simply, nouthetic counseling consists of lovingly confronting people out of deep concern in order to help them make those changes that God requires.

Who?Who?

• There are always three persons involved:

1. The Holy Spirit

2. The Human counselor

3. The counselee

The Holy Spirit & CounselingThe Holy Spirit & Counseling

John 14:15-17 "If you love me, you will obey what I command. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever- 17 the Spirit of truth.

John 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

John 15:26 "When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.

John 16:7-8 Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:

John 16:13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.

What are the Qualifications? What are the Qualifications?

Rom 15:14 I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, complete in knowledge and competent to instruct one another.

• He needs (first of all) to know God's Word well: the Word of Christ must "dwell within him richly."

• Secondly, the nouthetic counselor needs to be full of wisdom.

• Thirdly, there is the essential quality of goodness.Gal 6:1 Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who

are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted.

• The fourth qualification, being helped by another Christian: "You who are spiritual."

Page 19: Company LOGO Biblical Counseling. Counseling What?

CounseleeCounselee

• They have a problem

• They have to confess any sin

3 Dimensions of Problems3 Dimensions of Problems

1. Presentation problems – Answers the question, “why are you here?”

• e.g. “I’m depressed”, “I an overweight”, “I don’t have any friends”, “Nobody knows the real me”

• (Often presented as a cause when really an effect)

2. Performance problems – This is the cause of the symptoms or presentation problem

• e.g. “I haven’t been much of a wife”, “I eat when I get emotional”, “I get angry and yell often”, “I don’t open up or get real”

• (Often presented as an effect when really a cause)

Page 21: Company LOGO Biblical Counseling. Counseling What?

3 Dimensions of Problems3 Dimensions of Problems

3. Preconditioning problems – This is the root of the performance problem

• e.g. “I avoid responsibility whenever the going gets tough”, “I don’t give my problems over to God”, I don’t process anger well”, “I don’t trust people”

• (Often presented as an effect when really the underlying cause, the habitual response pattern, the long-standing underlying pattern of non-biblical responses, of which the performance problem is but one instance; the preconditioning problem generally does not come fully into focus until its relationship to the first two has been understood)

• In counseling, the three problems need to be distinguished and considered separately

• Take the presentation problem seriously in order to get to the deeper problems

THEMES of SINTHEMES of SIN

• Genesis 3 shows this with Adam & Eve

1. Rejection of God

2. Rejection leads to serious consequences

3. We run, in order to hide and avoid, or to cover up

4. We also shift blame to others

Page 23: Company LOGO Biblical Counseling. Counseling What?

ChangeChange

• Biblical change is the goal of counseling• Ephesians 4:17-24

So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do… 22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

• Change is a two-factored process

Authority in CounselingAuthority in Counseling

• Counselors who exercise the authority of God, are not authorities in their own right

• We make many kinds of statements, we must know what is biblically binding

• Which statements are proper and which are improper uses of counseling authority
