Dear Citizen and Visitors of Luebeck!Luebeck is moving forward! This year will be the third time the citizens of Luebeck will show how wonderful interacting with people from the most extraordinary walks of life and backgrounds from uncountable regions of the world can be. Under the motto “we. luebeck.” we cordially invite you to our third intercultural summer.The hallmark of the intercultural summer in Luebeck is its pinpoint focus on the direct interaction between people. In this way low-threshold opportunities are offered to meet and to experience new things, and we all have the opportunity to get to know each other. By learning new traditions we also start to reflect on our own. I find it thrilling and enriching to witness this exchange.Once more our organizers in Luebeck offer wonderful opportunities to experience the diversity of cultures. I am very grateful for this. Without the many organizations and institutions most of which serve as volunteers, the abundance of cultural life in Luebeck that we maintain and enjoy would not be possible at all. I am particularly charmed that the volunteers are becoming increasingly involved in the community, and are organizing cooperation events such as our tour through several city districts on the 20th of May.On the 23rd of July, we will meet for a cozy picnic on the Holstenwiese in front of the Holstenhalle. Here, in the presence of the Holstentor, our aim will be to play, have fun, enjoy the fellowship, and to share the experience. Delicacies from the open-air buffet, music, and children’s games from all over the world: together we want to share and experience this. It would be wonderful if you could be there too! Let yourself be inspired by the feeling that is steadily blossoming and growing. Here in Luebeck, we really have good reasons to look forward to the many possibilities of being with one another. Intercultural Summer 2017 Foreword / GreetingAs this year‘s co-patron I am delighted to be able to speak a few words to those taking an interest or taking part in an event.The third intercultural summer will take place at venues all over Luebeck, with more than 50 contributing parties.I am especially delighted about all the involvment by the VHS Luebeck , because I am a representative of the “GEMEINNÜTZIGE “ and therefore I am an active participant myself.Our Showcase of Nations will embrace a variety of activities which come from all possible angles. All activities are dedicated to the friendship between the citizens and the guests of Luebeck to promote mutual un-derstanding, represent art and culture from many different backgrounds, and are meant to show the sheer joy of being and celebrating together.We must never forget this shared joy, because it is what helps us cope with the problems and the down sides of everyday life. And this common everyday life is what will prove how ‚intercultural‘ we really are, and what we all, each to his or her own, have learned about Luebeck‘s communal life, especially through this Intercultural Summer.I am glad to be able to invite and welcome you. Make use of our nu-merous offers and attend the opening ceromy on May the 20th 2017.We will start off at the media docks at 10:40 p.m. with an intercultural tour through four city districts. Our 3rd intercultural summer in LuebeckThe intercultural summer 2017 offers once more a wide range of events with a clear focus on meeting other cultures, changing perspectives and the desire to shape our lives with one another for a healthy com-munity. In this program you will find about 100 events made by more than 40 actors, some of them as a cooperation project. We are especially looking forward to the series “showcase of nations” that will enrich our intercultural summer for the third time. There is an event in this issue to match even the most exquisite of tastes, and the-re is an event for every age. Bilingualism is a first this year: if you turn the program booklet, you will find the German version. We are confident that with this addition we will be able to reach and interest many new individuals for the intercultural sum-mer events. And now we cordially invite you to join us on the opening day. We will be in four city districts of Luebeck with a colorful parade!

This year, we are celebrating the start of the intercultural summer with an intercul-tural move. A city bus will take us from the media docks to various parts of the city and then back to the market square. We will stop at four stations and we would like to visit people and invite them to the events. At the stations the two patrons will greet the guests, and at each station there is a small cultural program as well as infor-mation on the various events from May to July. A cycling group of the ADFC will ac-company and animate the tour under the motto „Velo for welcome“. All” Lübeckers” are very welcome to be there!

• On the meadow: Make your own color-ful pinwheels with children outside. Our motto: Fresh wind not only for a summer!

• A colorful clothesline: Bring a piece of clothing and hang it on the clothesline and watch it flutter in the wind. For a do-nation of 1 € per piece, you can choose what you like and take it home. The col-lected donations are used to support a cooperation project.

• Learning to swim at a young age is desir-able, but it is also completely possible to learn how to swim as a senior. Come visit us at our information desk of Luebeck’s swimming pools. In addition, we offer information about our apprenticeship program „Fachangestellter für Badebe-triebe“.

• Enjoy the game, the fun, the exchange, the conversation and the music that will enrich our community.

Colorful picnic for everyone

On this day we invite all citizens to a color-ful picnic on the “Holstenwiese” beside the Holstentor. On a long table we will build an international buffet with the meals brought by the participants. Bring a picnic blanket, some folding chairs, a thermos, and good vibes!

presents a compilation of homemade in-struments. You are invited to play, exper-iment, and find your own sound

• In the art gas station of Defacto: A jungle of questions - an installation by Michaela Berning-Tournier. A big map consisting of a selection of nearly 3000 questions - filling the room in the form of an over-sized mobile suspended from the ceiling and throwing a kaleidoscopic light on the Zeitgeist of the people in 2012.

• In the Garage 33 of Defacto : Jasna Ma-ria Meyer offers painting experiments for children, adolescents and adults.

• Atlas Palimpsest - a collaborative art work - searching for words with values: a palimpsest in ancient times was a papy-rus scroll or a parchment on which writ-ing was erased or washed off to be filled with new content. As mentioned above, the first part of this year’s third Showroom of Nations, on the topic of South Africa, will take place on May 24th at 6 pm in the gardens behind the “GEMEIN-NÜTZIGE”, which are accessible via the Bürgergärten adjacent to the right of “Heiligen-Geist-Spital” (Hospice of the Holy Spirit). The presentations will then continue with China on May 31st. Altogether we will offer nine presenta-tions with a colourful mix of countries, some of which were deliberately chosen to give an insight into the home coun-tries of some of our newly immigrated fellow citizens. You can look forward to nations such as Canada, Estonia, Moldova, and Brazil.Admission is free of charge and in case of rain a tent will be provided.

An Art Project - Stories of TimeAbout 11 school children, immigrants and non - immigrants, all members of the Baltic Primary and Comprehensive school along with Franziska Koschmidder and Rainer Hoffman are producing a book about the meaning of “Time”. We. Stories of time. An art projectThe pupils participating in the project will work with the mentor to create stories that tell tales from their personal life. Reading and writing your own stories does not only improve the imagination but also the reading and writing skills of the children. We have been working on these books since the beginning of January 2017. The stories of “their time” (about topics such as my time - your time, time spent together, time with the family, time spent at home with our parents / grandparents, con-cepts of time like back then and nowa-days ...) will be illustrated along with the artist over the course of six weeks. The students will be taught various printing and painting techniques (wood and linoleum printing, monotype, frottage). The design will be discussed and created with experimental techniques. Around 20 artistically designed pages are planned, which are matched to the content of the stories. The finished book is printed in small a volume.Visitors are very welcome.
