MARIANNA VARDINOGIANNI'S SPEECHDURING THEOPENING EVENTOFSOCIAL STRUCTURES

Social Structures

Dear Bishop, Sir Mayor, Mr President of

Club for UNESCO ofPiraeus & Islands,

I am deeply touched and it is a great

honor to be here by your side. I feel a great

respect towards to the effort have done by

“Club for UNESCO ofPiraeus & Islands”,

it’s President Mr. Ioannis Maronitis, and to

our fellow citizens, the people of Social

Structures we are opening today, who will

find here a shelter and support.

The establishing ofthis Center which will

service the region Keratsini, Drapetsona,

Perama, like those has been established at

the region of Piraeus, and those that is to

operate at the region ofNikaia and Corinth,

is a notable initiative and a great social

contribution.

During this difficult period for Greece,

each of us has to work hard and with

responsibility and love to stand by our

fellow citizens, victims of the economical

crises. Initiatives like this are an example

for the whole society, which gives us HOPE,

for the future that comes. Our country needs

projects like this and people who have

visions and make them true, people who

dare, who are planning, who are utilizing,

and whose creativity never stops.

Mr. Ioannis Maronitis, together with his

team, is a person for whom only talking is

not enough. I follow them and collaborate

with them years enough to honestly

congratulate them for their sensitivity, their

activeness, their method and their tireless

effort that vindicated daily. Their

paradigmatic effort gives us motives and

ideas and is formatting the message that

Greece is not a static society. Still there is

sense of honour, pride, dignity, sensitivity,

principles, and faith to God that gives

strength, everything which constitutes the

genuine Greek soul.

These modern Structures, which people

of Club for UNESCO have created in a

brilliant mood and careful study, for

offering their services in many fields with

dignity to the beneficiaries’ families, are

innovative and deserve praise.

Page 15: UNESCOPIO MAGAZINE

Social Structures

Meanwhile, these Structures are giving job

to young people and are creating the

conditions for developing a social “chain of

love” based on solidarity. A “chain oflove”

that I strongly support and I wish this

“chain” from local level to lengthen to the

regional by its arrival to many places ofour

state.

I would like to thank Mr. Ioannis

Maronitis for his cooperation and for

inviting me to the Opening of this project

and to the next that will be ready soon. I am

pleasure that a Club for UNESCO is so

active by giving an example to others to

help their local society. That is happening

because ofClub’s President who never stops

looking for creative ways and intervention

project relying on himself and the

possibilities ofyoung people nearby him.

I would also like to thank the mayor of

Keratsini-Drapetsona Mr. Tzannis Luke and

of Perama Mr Pantelis Zoumbouli, hoping

in continuing their support towards this

project.

I would like to congratulate my side all

those who supported this initiative, the local

community and businesses that have

contributed in one way or another to the

success of the project. In social

contribution, time is precious. We must be

people ofprojects and this has always been

the guiding principle in my life. I can see

that in the work of Club for UNESCO of

Piraeus & Islands and I feel even more

hope that we will see more and more related

projects around us, in Greece oftomorrow.

I wish good start for Structures; I hope

strength for their staff and good luck to the

Club!

A promise from me: I'll always be beside

you and I you are always in my thoughts

and in my heart.

Thank you! (Tuesday, September 10, 2013)

INTERVIEWby Club for UNESCO of Piraeus & Islands of

the Responsible of the Insurance Company

"VIP Insurance Brokers"

MrsAggeliki Pitsoli for supporting SOCIAL

STRUCTURES AS FOR THE IMMEDIATE DEALING WITH POVERTY

Social Structures

- What was the main motivation to support

the Permanent Social Structures as for

Immediate Dealing with Poverty, created

by Club for UNESCO ofPiraeus & Islands

in cooperation with municipalities of

Nikaia – A.I. Rentis, Piraeus, Keratsini –

Drapetsona – Perama and Corinth?

- The main motivation was the offer to ourfellow citizens, who live below the povertyline, through my professional capacity as aninsurer, supporting the work of the Club forUNESCO ofPiraeus and Islands.

- What were your first impressions whenyou visited the 4 houses for poor people?

- I felt very touched and I thought howmany goods in our daily lives, both tangibleand intangible, we take for granted, when infact the truth was in front of my eyes…Nobody knows the next day of his life.Today some of our fellowmen are in thisposition. Tomorrow maybe I will. Thisfeeling gave me further impetus to offer asmuch as I can.

- Tell us about your offer in our

Structures…

- As “VIP Insurance Brokers” we insure 4homes for people in need, for all risks, including fire and related disasters thatcause damage to buildings, for to berepaired as soon as possible, through thecompensation procedure.

I could not imagine a single day ofinability to service our fellowman. If oneday a little poor child wanted a warm plateof food, a bathroom or a corner with gameswhere could he find it? Looking at myfellows waiting to order, I said to myself,“Not a single day I do not want be wastedto reopen the structure after damage”.

Page 18: UNESCOPIO MAGAZINE

February 2014

1 7

Social Structures

In addition, we insured all beneficiaries, forany accidents that may occur during theirstay in Structures. Finally, because we love, empathize and

understand the offer of employees of theStructures we take care for their insurancetoo. All employees of the Structures deserveour support, because they offer not onlytheir work but their love too.

- What is the contribution of the Social

Structures to Greek society?

- This is a huge social offering and projectbased not at the sign but to practice. We areused to seeing enough people remain at thesign without a substantial work.

- A message to the readers of

“UNESCOPIO”…

- The Office “VIP Insurance Brokers” islocated in Nikaia, a city of painful past ofrefugee and poverty. I am a grandchild ofrefugees from Asia Minor. I grew up and I

reside professionally and personally inNikaia. The refugees knew well what poverty is

and were helping their fellow citizens, despite their own difficulties and privations. My husband and head of the enterprise, Mr.Politis Vrettos, is a child from Mani whogrew up in a poor neighborhood in Piraeus, the neighborhood “Maniatika”. The peopleof Mani, during the difficult times arebecoming one body and are fightingtogether.

Our origins, leads us to support Nikeaand the surrounding area of Piraeus. Inaddition, our enterprise because of theeconomic crisis, allocated financialpackages with favorable benefits for alleconomically vulnerable groups to ensurethat no man will not remain without the“gift of health & property insurance” ofhimself and his family. We all we can offer. However, the most important contribution ishappening when we have economicaldifficulties too.

- How and to what extent can the arts

contribute to any effort to support our

fellowmen who are challenged by the

consequences ofthe economic crisis?

- Aristotle said that the goal of art is torepresent not the outward appearance ofthings, but their inner significance. Thus,we can assume that through the arts, peoplecan have a view of the internal world, anawakening of the hidden truth and thereforean awakening of what is important forpeople around us. In this way, we arebecoming aware of the importance of socialservices to our fellow citizens. The hardshell that covers us like wrapper has thematerial of selfishness and our personalinterest. Somehow, the light of art dissolvesthis. Art elevates and creates a climate ofunity. Through this unity is born the spiritof solidarity. Let’s allow art to take us to thestreets of social contribution and solidarity.

- How did you feel when you visited our

Social Structures?

- I was surprised that I came across personsthat raise no trace of self-pity or misery. Imet smiles and a kind of happiness that one

feels when looked after through an excess. This excess exists mainly due to Mr.Maronitis who cares people in theseStructures like they are all his children.Believe me; all these voices were raised tosing with us had not a single note of self-pity or anger, or sense of injustice. Theywere all forgiven in the atmosphere ofgratitude, warmth and unity that cures thefeeling of loneliness. These SocialStructures are shelter of kindness.Congratulations.

- What is the contribution of our Social

Structures to Greek society?

- It is an important example to sensitizemore and more institutions and individualsto collaborate helping their fellow citizenswhere is necessary. God exists where thereare more than two people. The commonefforts make the difference and create newpaths.

- A message for the readers of

“UNESCOPIO” . . .

- I think with these efforts and with the loveand support shown to the arts, Club forUNESCO of Piraeus & Islands awake theheart of citizens and of the state, to light acandle in the darkness that always exists intimes of crisis. Let's keep this candlelighted as much as we can with our self-sacrifice, against everything that wants itoff to control all things. Only then, theHumanity will shine again.

THE GREAT INQUISITORBY FYODOR DOSTOYEVSKY

THIS MONTH

At the theater, “Alkmini” is presented“The Great Inquisitor” (Monologue) ofFyodor Dostoyevsky (from the BrothersKaramazov) under the aegis of Club forUNESCO of Piraeus & Islands (Alkminis 8,Gazi) every Monday and Tuesday at 19:00.The legend of the Grate Inquisitor is a

chapter from “Brothers Karamazov” writtenby Dostoyevsky. Ivan, one of the threebrothers and the most philosophical, narrates to Alyosha, the most religiousnovice friar at that time, his imagined poem. The history that Ivan narrates to his brotherAlyosha, is about the Christ’s return toearth, and particularly to Seville during the15th century. All people welcome himhaving deep emotion, but the Inquisitor, rejected Jesus and put him in jail. Duringthe night he visited him in his cell.

The Grand Inquisitor proves to Jesus usingarguments, that what he brought to theEarth can not take place. That's becauseChrist misunderstood the nature of peopleand in his attempt to do the good, he did thebad. At the beginning, the audience ispersuaded that the Grand Inquisitor is right. But gradually, the audience understands theweaknesses of his arguments, which is theweakness of every dictatorship, religious orsocial. Thus, if someone may follow thestructure of arguments then will deeplymeet the questions that dominate the world, today more than ever.

“The core ofthe myth is timeless. It refers toall types and forms of dominated power. It

is like an amazing anatomy of human’s

nature, both individually and collectively,

over the question “power or freedom?”.

The three Karamazov’s children represented

the three tenses (“elemental Russia”,

“European culture”, “folk roots”) that

prevailed in Russia at the Dostoyevsky’s

era. These three points, that characterize

the thought ofthis great Russian writer, also

constitute the mindset of the modern world

and are the basis of social and economic

problems that concern us lately. Therefore,

the project mirrors modern society.”,commented the President of Club forUNESCO of Piraeus & Islands and VicePresident of World Federation of UNESCOClubs, Centres and Associations (WFUCA)for Europe and North America Mr. IoannisMaronitis.

The musical performance “Comedy ofLove” by Ipsen for the first time in Greecepresented under the aegis of the Club forUNESCO of Piraeus & Islands, theNorwegian Embassy and the CulturalOrganization of the Municipality of Athensat Theatre STUDIO Kypselis – hall “VilmaKyrou”.This is the “COMEDY OF LOVE”, a

youthful and tender comedy, written withmany songs - modeled on the “Peer Gynt” -with a heretical issue: the claim of everyyoung person for the opportunity to live adreaming life, faraway from theconventions defined by State’s laws, theChurch and the moralism. Wants and hopesof youth come to this project in starkcontrast to the rules of a society in declineand decay. A poetic, love story becomes aheretic musical. Fifteen actors sang live in adream scene that brought us to the gardenof a stone guesthouse in Norway. The President of Club for UNESCO of

Piraeus & Islands and Vice President ofWorld Federation of UNESCO Clubs,

Centres and Associations (WFUCA) forEurope and North America Mr. IoannisMaronitis commented, “This was a highquality theatrical performance that takes

audiences into meaningful moments of

entertainment and concerns on life. It is

very good that young artists looking for

classic projects to convey the beat ofperiod

we are living through the filter ofthe past.”
