MAY 31 : PENTECOST

After the Saviour's Ascension into the Heavens, the eleven Apostles and the rest of His disciples,

the God-loving women who followed after Him from the beginning, His Mother, the most holy Virgin

Mary, and His brethren-all together about 120 souls returned from the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem.

Entering into the house where they gathered, they went into the upper room, and there they persevered

in prayer and supplication, awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit, as their Divine Teacher had promised

them. In the meanwhile, they chose Matthias, who was elected to take the place of Judas among the

Apostles.

Thus, on this day, the seventh Sunday of Pascha, the tenth

day after the Ascension and the fiftieth day after Pascha, at the

third hour of the day from the rising of the sun, there suddenly

came a sound from Heaven, as when a mighty wind blows, and it

filled the whole house where the Apostles and the rest with them

were gathered. Immediately after the sound, there appeared

tongues of fire that divided and rested upon the head of each one.

Filled with the Spirit, all those present began speaking not in their

native tongue, but in other tongues and dialects, as the Holy Spirit

instructed them.

The multitudes that had come together from various places

for the feast, most of whom were Jews by race and religion, were

called Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and so forth, according to the

places where they dwelt. Though they spoke many different

tongues, they were present in Jerusalem by divine dispensation.

When they heard that sound that came down from Heaven to the

place where the Disciples of Christ were gathered, all ran together

to learn what had taken place. But they were confounded when they

came and heard the Apostles speaking in their own tongues.

Marveling at this, they said one to another, "Behold, are not all

these which speak Galileans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?"

But others, because of their foolishness and excess of evil, mocked the wonder and said that the Apostles

were drunken.

Then Peter stood up with the eleven, and raising his voice, spoke to all the people, proving that

that which had taken place was not drunkenness, but the fulfillment of God's promise that had been

spoken by the Prophet Joel: "And it shall come to pass in the last days, that I shall pour out of My Spirit

upon all flesh, and your sons and daughters shall prophesy" (Joel 2:28), and he preached Jesus of

Nazareth unto them, proving in many ways that He is Christ the Lord, Whom the Jews crucified but

God raised from the dead. On hearing Peter's teaching, many were smitten with compunction and

received the word. Thus, they were baptized, and on that day about three thousand souls were added to

the Faith of Christ.

Such, therefore, are the reasons for today's feast: the coming of the All-holy Spirit into the world,

the completion of the Lord Jesus Christ's promise, and the fulfillment of the hope of the sacred disciples,

which we celebrate today. This is the final feast of the great mystery and dispensation of God's

incarnation. On this last, and great, and saving day of Pentecost, the Apostles of the Saviour, who were

unlearned fishermen, made wise now of a sudden by the Holy Spirit, clearly and with divine authority

spoke the heavenly doctrines. They became heralds of the truth and teachers of the whole world. On this

day they were ordained and began their apostleship, of which the salvation of those three thousand souls

in one day was the comely and marvelous first fruit.

31 ΜΑΪΟΥ : ΠΕΝΤΗΚΟΣΤΗ Μετά την ανάληψη του Σωτήρος στους ουρανούς, οι ένδοξοι Απόστολοι και λοιποί μαθηταί του,

καθώς και οι θεοφιλείς γυναίκες που από την αρχή τον είχαν ακολουθήσει, η Παναγία Παρθένος Μαρία

η Μητέρα του και οι αδελφοί του, όλοι μαζί ψυχές ίσαμε 120, γύρισαν από το όρος των Ελαιών στην

Ιερουσαλήμ και, μπαίνοντας στο σπίτι όπου έμεναν, ανέβηκαν στο υπερώο, δηλαδή τον απάνω όροφό

του και εκεί, προσκαρτερώντας με προσευχή και δέηση, περίμεναν την επιστροφή του Αγίου Πνεύματος,

σύμφωνα με του θείου διδασκάλου την υπόσχεση. Εκεί στο μεταξύ, εξέλεξαν και τον Ματθία και τον

συναρίθμησαν με τους ένδεκα Αποστόλους.

Κατά δε τη σημερινή Κυριακή, δεκάτη μεν ημέρα μετά την

Ανάληψη, πεντηκοστή από το Πάσχα, ιγ΄ τότε του Μαΐου, περί την

Τρίτη ώρα της ημέρες από την ανατολή του ηλίου, ξαφνικά έγινε

τέτοιος ήχος απο τον ουρανό κατερχόμενος, όπως όταν πνέη δυνατός

άνεμος, και γέμισε όλο το σπίτι όπου καθόνταν οι Απόστολοι με τους

λοιπούς. Ευθύς μετλα τον ήχο, φάνηκαν γλώσσες πύρινες, που

διαμερίσθηκαν και κάθισαν πάνω στον καθένα. Και όλοι οι εκεί

έγιναν πνευματέμφοροι και άρχισαν να λένε, όχι στη μητρική τους

γλώσσα, αλλά σε άλλες γλώσσες και διαλέκτους, όπως και ο, τι τους

υπαγόρευε το Πνεύμα το Άγιο.

Τότε τα πλήθη που είχαν συρρεύσει για την εορτή από

διαφόρους τόπους, Πάρθοι και Μήδοι και Ελαμίται, κλπ., Ιουδαίοι

μεν όλοι το γένος και τη θρησκεία, έτσι δε ονομαζόμενοι από τον

τόπο όπου, διασκορπισμένοι από πολύν καιρό, είχαν γεννηθεί και

ανατραφεί ο καθένας, αυτοί, λέγω, οι τόσων διαλέκτων

ετερόγλωσσοι Ιουδαίοι που κατά θεία οικονομία βρέθηκαν τότε

στην Ιερουσαλήμ ακούοντας εκείνο τον ήχο να κατεβαίνει από τον

ουρανό εκεί που ήσαν οι Μαθηταί του Χρίστου, έτρεξαν όλοι για να

μάθουν τι άραγε είχε συμβεί. Αλλά έμειναν εκστατικοί όταν ήλθαν

και άκουσε ο καθένας τους Αποστόλους να μιλούν τη μητρική του διάλεκτο. Και θαυμάζοντας έλεγαν,

«Μα δεν είναι όλοι αυτοί που μιλούν έτσι Γαλιλαίοι; Και πως ακούμε ο καθένας να μας μιλούν στο

διάλεκτο του τόπου μας;». Άλλοι δε από τη πολλή τους μωρία και κακία, ίσως δε πάλι οι τυφλοί

Γραμματείς και Φαρισαίοι, χλευάζοντας το θαύμα, έλεγαν τους Αποστόλους μεθυσμένους.

Τότε στάθηκε ο Πέτρος με τους άλλους ένδεκα Μαθητάς και υψώνοντας τη φωνή δημηγόρησε

ενώπιον όλων αποδεικτικά, λέγοντας ότι το γεγονός εκείνο δεν ήταν αποτέλεσμα μέθης, αλλά ήταν η

εκπλήρωσης της υποσχέσεως του Θεού, που δόθηκε με τον Προφήτη Ιωήλ: «Και έσται εν ταις εσχάταις

ημέραις, εκχέω από του Πνέυματός μου επί πάσαν σάρκα και προφητεύσουσιν οι υιοί υμών και αι

θυγατέρες υμών...» (γ’1). Κατόπιν κηρύττει τον Ναζωραίο Ιησού και με πολλά αποδείχνει ότι αυτός είναι

ο Κύριος, ο Χριστός, που οι μεν Ιουδαίοι σταύρωσαν, ο δε Θεός τον ήγειρε εκ νεκρών. Μετά απ’αυτό,

πολλοί κατανύχθηκαν και έχοντας αποδεχθή τον λόγο βαπτίσθηκαν και προστέθηκαν την ημέρα εκείνη

στην πίστη του Χριστού ψυχές έως τρείς χιλιάδες.

Ιδού όλο το θέμα της παρούσης εορτής. Την έλευση δηλαδή του Παναγίου Πνεύματος στον

κόσμο, την πραγματοποίησι της υποσχέσεως του Ιησού Χριστού και την εκπλήρωσι της ελπίδος των

ιερών του Μαθητών εορτάζουμε σήμερα. Αυτή είναι η μεθέορτος και τελευταία εορτή του μεγάλου

μυστηρίου της ενσάρκου οικονομίας του Θεού. Κατ’ αυτή την εσχάτη και μεγάλη και σωτήριο ημέρα

της Πεντηκοστής, οι Απόστολοι του Σωτήρος , οι πρώην αγράμματοι και ακατάρτιστοι ψαράδες,

έχοντας γίνει σοφοί κατά Θεόν μονομιάς από το Άγιο Πνεύμα, θεολόγησαν σαφώς τα ουράνια δόγματα

και έγιναν οι κήρυκες της αληθείας και όλου του κόσμου οι διδάσκαλοι. Αυτή την ημέρα άρχισαν την

αποστολή τους, της οποίας ο ωραίος και θαυμάσιος πρώτος καρπός υπήρξε η αυθήμερον σωτηρία

τρισχιλίων ψυχών.

CHRIST IS RISEN! ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ ΑΝΕΣΤΙ! Words cannot express how thankful we are for everybody who made this Great Lent, Holy Week and Pascha such a success! The Board of Directors, GOYANs, Altar Attendants, the Ladies who decorated the Epitaph, the chanters, everyone who brought red eggs an Easter lilies to church; those who carried the Epitaph and banners, and everybody in the background who helped out – you know who you are and we thank you from our hearts. And especially those who took pictures – many of them are here on the website.

Πεντηκοστάριον Η περίοδος από το Πάσχα ως την Πεντηκοστή είναι η λαμπρότερη περίοδος στη ζωή της

Εκκλησίας. Οι ημέρες της νηστείας έχουν τελειώσει. Ο Χριστός είναι ανάμεσά

μας αναστημένος. Η Εκκλησία πλέει στο φως της Αναστάσεως καί της

ουράνιας ζωής.

Κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της περιόδου η Εκκλησία θέλει με το

λειτουργικό της κλίμα να κάνει αισθητή την παρουσία του αναστημένου

Χριστού καί της λυτρωτικής Του δυνάμεως. Γι’ αυτό δείχνει πρώτον, πώς ο

αναστημένος Χριστός καθαρίζει τον άνθρωπο τόσο απ’ τα συμπτώματα, που

είναι η σωματική αρρώστια όσο κι από τις ρίζες της αμαρτίας που είναι τα πάθη

καί κυρίως ο ανθρώπινος εγωκεντρισμός. Δεύτερον, δείχνει πώς τον ανασταίνει

όταν είναι πνευματικά νεκρός, τρίτον πώς τον φωτίζει όταν έχει στερηθεί το

φως καί βρίσκεται στο σκοτάδι καί τέλος πώς αποκαθιστά στην αρχική της

κατάσταση καί την κανονική της σχέση με το Θεό τη φύση του πού έχει διαφθαρεί από την αμαρτία.

Η περίοδος αυτή αρχίζει με την Διακαινήσιμο εβδομάδα κατά τη διάρκεια της οποίας τελείται

καθημερινά η πασχαλινή λειτουργία, αφού ολόκληρη η εβδομάδα είναι η ογδόη ημέρα, καί τελειώνει με

την Κυριακή των Αγίων Πάντων, που είναι η αρχή μιας άλλης εκκλησιαστικής περιόδου.

Η πρώτη Κυριακή μετά το Πάσχα είναι η Κυριακή του Θωμά. Είναι η παρουσία του Χριστού σε

μας, συνηγμένους στην Εκκλησία των "θυρών κεκλεισμένων", καί μας δείχνει πώς εμείς πρέπει να

ανταποκριθούμε σ' αυτή την παρουσία καί πώς πρέπει να συναντήσουμε τον αναστημένο Χριστό.

Η Κυριακή των Μυροφόρων περιγράφει το θείο έρωτα που πρέπει να φλογίζει την καρδιά του

ανθρώπου για να επιτύχει αυτή τη συνάντηση.

Η Κυριακή του Παραλυτικού μας λέει ότι έχουμε θεραπευθεί από το Χριστό με το νερό του

βαπτίσματος πεθαίνοντας καί ανιστάμενοι με Αυτόν σε καινότητα ζωής καί με την ψυχοσωματική

θεραπεία του παραλύτου δείχνει την καθαρτική δύναμη που έχει πάνω στον άνθρωπο η θεία ενέργεια.

Ο εορτασμός της Μεσοπεντηκοστής είναι η προσφορά του ύδατος της αληθινής λατρείας, της

νέας ζωής της Βασιλείας του Θεού που μας πλημμυρίζει με το πνεύμα του Χριστού του εκ νεκρών

Αναστάντος.

Η Κυριακή της Σαμαρείτιδος αναγγέλλει τη σωτηρία ολόκληρου του ανθρωπίνου γένους με την

Ανάσταση του Χριστού, πού είναι το φως των Εθνών καί δείχνει τη δύναμη του Χριστού να ανασταίνει

τον πνευματικά νεκρό άνθρωπο.

Η Κυριακή του Τυφλού είναι το δώρο του φωτισμού των ανθρώπων για να δουν καί να

γνωρίσουν το νόημα της ζωής μέσα απ’ τη νίκη του Χριστού καί με το φως της Αναστάσεως.

Η Ανάληψη ολοκληρώνει το έργο της απολυτρώσεως με την αποκατάσταση της ανθρωπίνης

φύσεως στην κανονική της κατάσταση καί την είσοδο της στα τρίσβαθα της θείας ουσίας δια του

ενσαρκωμένου Ιησού Χριστού που τη φέρνει μαζί Του παίρνοντας τη θέση Του στα δεξιά του Πατρός.

Τέλος η μεγάλη ημέρα της Πεντηκοστής είναι η έλευση του Αγίου Πνεύματος σε μας, η σφραγίδα,

η υπόσχεση καί η θεία εγγύηση της παρουσίας της Βασιλείας του Θεού ανάμεσα μας που υλοποιείται με

το γεγονός της Εκκλησίας.

Κάθε Κυριακή της περιόδου αυτής είναι μια βαθιά πνευματική εμπειρία του μυστηρίου της νίκης

καί της δυνάμεως του Χριστού. Κάθε Κυριακή έχει το Πασχαλινό της θέμα. Όλα τα Ευαγγελικά

αναγνώσματα των Κυριακών αυτής της περιόδου κάνουν λόγο για νερό. Η προβατική κολυμβήθρα του

παραλυτικού, το πηγάδι της Σαμαρείτιδος, η χρίση καί η πλύση των ματιών του τυφλού. Με τη μορφή

του νερού παρουσιάζεται όχι η φύση αλλ’ οι ενέργειες του Αγίου Πνεύματος που όπως καί το νερό είναι

"άλλόμενον", ζωντανό, καθαρτικό, αναψυκτικό, καρποφόρο καί μέσα σ’ αυτό καί μέσα απ’ αυτό γίνεται

δυνατή η νέκρωση του παλαιού ανθρώπου καί η ανάσταση του νέου.

Η περίοδος αυτή είναι μια ιδιαίτερη ευκαιρία πού μας δίνει η Εκκλησία για να συνευρεθούμε με

τον αναστημένο Χριστό, να τον αγαπήσουμε καί να γνωρίσουμε την απέραντη δύναμή Του τόσο πάνω

στον υλικό όσο καί πάνω στον πνευματικό κόσμο.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT THE RESURRECTION Q: Who appears to have seen the resurrected Lord first? Who actually saw the risen Lord first? A: Mary Magdalene is cited by St Mark as being the first to see the risen Christ:

Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. (Mark 16:9), part of the 3rd matins resurrection Gospel, Mark 16:9-20)

This scripture would seem to decide the matter, but the holy tradition of the church, which is able to discern things spiritually, speaks otherwise. The very fact that from Pascha till the eve of the Ascension the church chants the beautiful hymn:

"The angel cried unto her who is full of grace, [saying] 'Rejoice, rejoice O Pure Virgin;

again I say, rejoice! For thy Son is risen from the grave on the third day.'"

(St. John of Damascus) serves to indicate that there is a hidden story in the scriptures concerning the Mother of God and her risen Son. St Gregory Palamas eloquently explains this hidden treasure of knowledge, in a sermon about the Holy Myrrh-bearers. Only a small part of that sermon is shown below, so that you will see this wonderful truth.

...After the resurrection, the first person who saw Him was a woman, as we heard in Mark's gospel reading: "Now when Jesus was risen in the morning of the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene." (Mk 16:9)

Clearly, it would appear therefore that the Evangelist stated both the time of Christ's resurrection, that is, the morning, and that He appeared first to Mary Magdalene and at precisely the time of His arising. But that is not what it really says, as will be evident when we study the matter a little more closely, because the Evangelist previously said, in agreement with the other Evangelists, that this woman named Mary came to the tomb earlier, "very early in the morning" (v 16:2), with the other myrrhbearing women. And when they found the tomb empty they departed.

Now, there is something mentioned by the Evangelists in a very shadowy way and I will reveal it to you. Indeed the good news of the Lord's resurrection, as is proper and fitting, was received from Him first by the Theotokos, prior to all other men. Also prior to all others, she saw Him and delighted in His divine speaking. And she not only saw Him with her own eyes and heard Him with her own ears, but she alone first touched His sacred feet with her own hands. However, the Evangelists do not say these things openly, because they did not wish to present the testimony of His Mother so they would not be giving unbelievers an excuse for suspicion. But now, through the grace of Him who is risen, we can explain it to the faithful.

I surmise and gather from all the Evangelists, therefore, that the Theotokos was the first person to come to the tomb of the Son of God, accompanied by Mary Magdalene. I conclude this mainly from the Evangelist Matthew, because he says, "...Mary Magdalene came and the other Mary" (Matt 28:1), Who was most certainly the Mother of God, to see the tomb. "And behold there was a great earthquake, for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven and rolled back the stone from the entrance, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightening, and his raiment white as snow. And for fear of him, the keepers trembled and became as dead." (v.2-8)

All the other women, therefore, came after the earthquake and after the guards fled, and found the tomb open and the stone moved away. But the Mother of God arrived at the moment the earthquake was happening, the stone was being moved and the tomb was opened. The guards, although very shaken, were still present, and after the quake they rose up seeking to flee. But the Mother of God rejoiced beholding this

scene. It seems to me that the life-bearing tomb was opened first of all for her, because through her all things were opened to us, all that is above in heaven and below on earth; and for her the angel so shone that, despite the darkness of the hour, she was able to see by the fullness of the angel's light not only the empty tomb but also the grave clothes neatly put aside and testifying to the resurrection of Him Who had been entombed.

Obviously, the evangelizing angel was Gabriel himself, because the moment he saw her rushing to the tomb, he, who in the beginning had said to her, "Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favor with God" (Lk.1:30), hastens now and descends to tell the Ever-virgin the same thing again and to announce the resurrection from the dead of Him Who without seed was born from her, and to lift the stone and display the empty tomb and the grave clothes in order to confirm the good news. Q: How were angels involved on the day of the resurrection? How many angels were involved in announcing the resurrection? A: Angels were heavily involved in making the news of the resurrection manifest, both by announcing it, and by rolling away the stone of the tomb. We first encounter God's messengers in the very early morning:

In the end of the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. {2} And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. {3} His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: {4} And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. {5} And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. {6} He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.(Mat 28:1-6)

Note that in this case, the two women were not bringing myrrh to anoint the Lord, but were only going to investigate the tomb. The "other Mary" is understood to be the Mother of God. After the announcement by the angel, Mary Magdalene went away, but the Theotokos stood by, and it was at this time that the angel gave to her a second "annunciation” that her Son was risen, and then Christ appeared to her. Mary Magdalene was filled with joy and fear, but did not completely believe in the resurrection yet. Because of her ignorance, and with great love, she later hastened to the tomb to anoint the Lord Jesus, and the recording of this incident reveals the agency of two angels:

(Luke 24:1-11) Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. {2} And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. {3} And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. {4} And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: {5} And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? {6} He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, {7} Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. {8} And they remembered his words, {9} And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest. {10} It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles. {11} And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not. (Luke 24:1-7)

In this incident we see that the stone had already been rolled away from the tomb, and two angels announced to the small cadre of women the good news of the resurrection.
