New English Department Online Writing Lab - Resource For Students

The New Hartford Senior High School English Department has launched a new resource for students. The Online Writing Lab was the Concept of Tenth Grade Honors Eng-lish teacher, Ms. Kelly Ann Nugent. Ms. Nugent created it with input from other members of the English Depart-ment. Through the site, students can access tools to help

them write essays and research papers--whether they

are at home or in school. Here's the link: http://www.newhartfordschools.org/nholwl

News from the Counseling

Department

Curriculum Night is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb-

ruary 8th at 6:30pm in the JAMPAC. This is a great

opportunity for families to hear from each Department

on what courses are offered for grades 9 through 12.

To Parents of Seniors: It is hard to believe that we

are at the mid year point in the busy life of a senior!

Most of the college applications have been filed by

now. Although a big part of the process is over, now

is the time that students should be focusing on a

strong finish to this year. Mid-year grade reports

will be submitted to all 4-year colleges by February

10th. The mid-year report is a copy of the student's

transcript with final semester averages listed for the

fall. The transcript will include updated cumulative

grade point averages (weighted and unweighted). As

students receive acceptance letters, the reality of the

cost of college hits! This is about the time we have a

steady stream of students come in and ask for scholar-

ship information. Students should be checking Navi-

ance on a weekly basis for scholarship infor-

mation. Seniors who have difficulty accessing the

information in their Naviance account should see their

counselor. A reminder, if you are interested in receiv-

ing financial aid, the FAFSA (Free Application for

Federal Student Aid) must be filed.

To Parents of Juniors: This is the time for the jun-

iors to really start thinking about next year and their

post graduation plans. Counselors will begin course

selections for the 2017-2018 school year with juniors

the week of February 6th. An option available to stu-

dents in their senior year is the New Visions program.

Parents and students are encouraged to attend the

Open House at BOCES on March 8th from 6:00 to 8:00

p.m. for more information. Course choices for senior

year should be made with consideration given to post

graduation plans. In October we shared information

regarding transcript, college testing, college search

process, and career information. Included was an ex-

planation of their transcript and general information

about what a college is looking for when they see a

student's transcript. College admissions testing op-

tions were also explained to students. By this time

students should have decided on which of the tests

and dates (SAT – March, May, June and/or ACT –

April, June) this spring they will test. Students can

register for the SAT at www.collegeboard.org and the

ACT’s at www.act.org. If students have not devel-

oped a potential list of colleges already, now is the

time to do so! The colleges should be listed in Navi-

ance. Some families may even want to visit a few col-

lege campuses during February and/or April break. If

you would like additional assistance as you go

through the college search process, please do not hesi-

tate to set up a meeting with your child's counselor.

The National College Fair in Syracuse is scheduled

for Wednesday, March 8th from 5 to 8pm at the SRC

Arena, Onondaga Community College.

To Parents of Sophomores: It is hard to believe we

are half way through the year! And yet, we are al-

ready turning our attention to the 2017-2018 school

year. Counselors will begin the course selection pro-

cess with sophomores during the week of February

6th. The Career and Technical Education programs at

BOCES are an option for a student’s junior year

schedule. Because these programs are a major time

commitment, students and parents are encouraged to

learn as much as possible about the programs before

making their selection. Counselors will make ar-

rangements for students interested in visiting a BO-

CES class in early March to see if such a class is right

for them. Parents and students are also encouraged to

attend the Open House on March 8th from 6:00 to 8:00

p.m. at the Career and Technical Education Center on

Middle Settlement Road. Students who are en-

rolled in AP European History or AP Chemistry

may want to consider taking the related SAT Sub-

ject Tests in June. Competitive colleges generally

require two or three Subject Tests in addition to the

SAT Reasoning Test. It is best to take these hour-

long tests at the completion of the cours-

es. Information regarding these tests, as well as regis-

tration, can be found at www.collegeboard.org or in

the Counseling Office.

New Hartford Communica-tions Club’s Legacy The Communications Club at New Hartford Senior High School is the legacy left by New Hartford Senior High School graduate and student athlete, Cooper Deck. Cooper and his father, Fred Deck, started New Hartford Central Radio when Cooper was a high school jun-ior. Cooper and his father cov-ered and broadcasted New Hartford sporting events. Ini-tially, they concentrated on Spartan Football away games and then decided to broadcast the final two home games of the season. Cooper stated, “Once I began to notice how much of an impact I was having and the thrill I got from broadcasting games, that’s when I knew this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Soon other students were involved and Cooper’s father decided to step aside and leave the entire operation to the students. Jack Angelucci, Ryan Falo, Matt Abraham and Joe Puccio became part of the NHCR organization. After the new scoreboard was donated to the district for Don Edick Field, the role of NHCR expanded dramatically with the organization running the score board at home

games for multiple sports starting with football. New Hartford Athletic Director, John Banek recognized the im-portance of NHCR and was a moving force in establishing a Communications Club at the high school after Cooper gradu-ated. High School Science teacher, Tom Krol took on the roll of

Faculty Advisor for the Communications Club bringing ad-ditional resources and technology. Jack Angelucci and Matt Abraham, both heavily involved in NHCR and the New Hartford Communications Club credit Cooper’s energy and his leadership qualities for getting

the whole thing started. Presently members of the Communications Club broadcast a variety of home and away Spartan sporting events. The club has approximately 29 members. Cooper was recently quoted in the Observer Dispatch, “The most important thing is that I get to give students opportunities I didn’t have until I created this. There are opportunities that can overlap into the real world and po-tentially, I hope, inspire students to go into this field if they really enjoy it.” Cooper always dreamed of attending Penn State. As a part of the application process, he wrote an essay about NHCR and believes that starting NHCR gave him the kind of experience and resume that admissions officials at Penn State were looking for. Cooper has been accepted at Penn State for the spring semester of 2017 where he will major in broadcast journalism with a concentration in sports.
