T he original Olympics began in Ancient Greece somewhere around 884 BC as a religious
festival, honoring different Gods and deceased heroes. Interestingly, no fighting whatsoever was allowed among soldiers during this time, since it was a time to
respect the gods and a time of peace
among one another.
The ancient Greeks believed strongly in
the concept of agon, or "competition," which explains why the original games were called Olympic Agonas. Therefore,
the Olympic Agonas. became about being the best person you could be, physically, ethically and spiritually, and winning an Olympic game was considered the highest honor a citizen could achieve.
The word "athlete" is comprised of the words athlo and
ego, which means someone who strives to improve.
With the secularization of the Olympic Games around
420 AD, they still retained some of the original significance that we see in today's games, such as individuals engaging in rigorous discipline to be the best
athletes they can be, which is truly admirable. Moreover, to this day, the Olympics still represent peace, unity, and diversity, bringing all of humankind
together.
There is a strong correlation between the virtues of the Olympics and our Orthodox faith. For the ancient Greeks, the Olympics meant becoming the best
individual for the various gods, which was what was most important to them first and foremost, which they did in communion with one another, as we do through
the liturgy and sacraments of the church. In this sense, the church becomes our individual and communal spiritual "stadium" where we train to be the best possible Christians we can be, working towards Theosis,
which is the journey of our soul growing closer towards the image of God. In this spiritual stadium, we strive to better ourselves not only physically but also spiritually,
so that can be more like the true God in who’s image we have been created. Becoming God-like is the goal and purpose of our lives, and each year, we embark on this
spiritual journey with the coming of the Triodion and
Great Lenten period.
The Triodion is the preparatory period before Great Lent where we cleanse
ourselves, both physically and spiritually, of our passions so that we may enter into Great Lent. Each Sunday of the Triodion,
the Church provides us with spiritual lessons that exemplify the virtues we must strive to attain, and the vices we must
disregard.
One lesson is on the first Sunday of the Triodion, the Sunday of the Parable of the Publican and the Pharisee. Through this
parable, Jesus teaches us that in order to begin on the journey of salvation, we must first embrace the virtue of repentance and
humility and renounce pride and arrogance, which is the first and most important lesson for our souls as athletes in Christ, since without humility, we cannot attain any
of the other virtues.
Humility is the queen of all virtues because it forces us to look at ourselves and not to judge others. When the Pharisee went up to the temple to pray, he was
arrogant and boastful. His prayer was about himself and how he thanked God that he was unlike other men. Even his posture denotes a certain arrogance and self-
centeredness. He stood up proud and looked down on others. While on the other hand, the Publican prostrated himself to the floor and beat his chest and humbly prayed, “God be merciful to me a sinner!” The Publican
recognized his unworthiness in front of God and asked
for His mercy.
We are reminded with the beginning of the Triodion
that we are not in a position to judge our brother or sister. We must leave that to God alone. We must enter this spiritual stadium with a contrite heart, without any
anger, or hatred, as in their wisdom did the ancient Greeks. We should also follow the discipline laid out for us by the ancient church fathers, which include fasting, prayer and almsgiving towards others in order to
become spiritually fit so that we may fight against sin, weakness and temptation. Lastly, we can take to our journeys the lessons of our Olympians, both ancient and
modern, that the highest virtue we can obtain as human beings is to respect and love others and to engage in
philoxenia at all times.

“Faith makes all things possible... love makes all things easy.”

“The first duty of love is to listen.”
Our Parish by Constantinos Vlamis , Parish Council President
“C h r i s t e m o u ,
Panagia mou, please, help me,
my family, my children, mother,
and father. Keep us safe! Keep us from the evil around us and protect us!” These are common
words we use to pray when we need our Lord’s help.
"St. Paul made this point: 'For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who
was preached among you by us-by me, Silvanus, and Timothy-was not Yes and No, but in Him was
Yes.' (2 Corinthians 1:19). For God, the word 'no' would show a lack of freedom. Reaction rather
than action. Resistance rather than affirmation." (The Freedom to say "Yes," The Ladder)
We ask for forgiveness. We ask
for health, love, prosperity. When in need, we ask for it today,
tomorrow, the day after ; for time
in need is short. There are no standards in our prayers . We ask our Lord Jesus Christ , “Please heal me, my child, my parent, my
friend , unconditionally.” Yet, when all is well and we need not any help, or sometimes when we
are angry and bitter , we quickly forget what we've asked from God. We set conditions, such as "Me,
talk to him? Never! My ego will not allow me! My hatred runs too deep to ever let go and forgive or be forgiven." Our Lord on the
Cross forgave all for what they did to Him. Shouldn't we try to follow His example just a little bit,
willing to reach out to our enemies and try to squeeze the hatred out of our hearts by filling it with love
instead? We need to cherish our church ,
take care of it, help it grow, make it flourish. Who do we really hurt
by neglecting our obligation, our commitment, our duty towards our home?
During the recent months we have been hit hard with the
winter’s cold. It's wrath has
brought frigid temperatures, ice , and snow. According to the weather forecasters, the average snowfall for February is about 17
to 18 in. We have had more than 50 in. this year, with more to come. Being that it is the start of
the year, Stewardship Offerings are not flowing in fast enough. With all of our recent expenses for
snow removal and heat, our accounts are being depleted at a rapid rate . Many of you - parishioners, friends, family - have
approached me to congratulate me for my new position. You’ve told me that whatever I need, you will
try to help me with. Today, I ask for that help. Please, send in your stewardship offering. Don't
procrastinate until the latter mon th s . We n e e d yo u r contribution now. Let us help our community do more than just
survive. Let’s help it flourish and grow with wealth until the spring sun brightens and the flowers
bloom.
την εκκλησία µας, ώστε να ακµάζει πάντα. Πραγµατικά ποιόν βλάπτουµε αν παραµελούµε την υποχρέωσή µας και το καθήκον µας προς την εκκλησία µας;

Daughters of
Penelope by Kathy Yiannoulis , President
T hank you to everyone who made our Penelope’s Café a success. We would like to congratulate Sylvia Bal
who won our Koulouraki contest along with Phoebe
Leask as our runner up! Thank you to all our bakers including Maria Bothos, Helen Yeotsas, Eleni Spyrou, Mary Papandreou and Kathy Angelos who did a
wonderful job. Thank you GOYA for being our judges. Looking forward to next year’s contest!
We have begun our Acts of Kindness in memory of the victims of the tragedy in Sandy Hook. It will be our prayers and our acts that will honor these innocent souls who lost their lives. These small acts of kindness are to
make a difference in people who need a hand, a kind gesture or something that will just make a difference for them. To name one act, we have shopped for the
Bridgeport Council of Churches Transitional Housing Program. Household items were purchased for houses to
be used for victims of domestic violence who are trying to transition to a new and safer life.
We also have two mini-drives planned. One drive is for Soldier Support Packages, which
will end on March 16th. We will also have a mini-drive for pet food supporting the Animal Center in Newtown, which will take place on April 6th. See our flyers for more information.
Look out for our annual Spring Raffle
supporting our scholarship fund. We will be raffling gift
cards to local grocery stores just in time for the Easter holiday! Each ticket is only $1 with ten prizes to be drawn on April 13 (Palm Sunday).
Please look out for the date for our March meeting.
It is being changed so as not to conflict with church services held during Lent. During this meeting, we will
be discussing our Acts of Kindness and all upcoming activities.
Please visit us at http://holytrinitybridgeport.org/daughters.html. Our chapter email is [email protected]. Lastly, “Like” us
on Facebook at Daughters of Penelope - Bridgeport "Hermes" Chapter 41, District 7. Please consider being a part of our group. We would love to have you!

Letters and the Three Hierarchs Sunday, an Artoklasia for the living and a Memorial Service was held
for the deceased brothers and sis-
ters of our Greek School. Flowers were presented to all teachers and to all those who have assisted the
Greek School Department in any way. It was a lovely presentation and a lovely way in which to honor
all our teachers, helpers, and stu-dents.
Many thanks to those who at-
tended "Penelope's Cafe" - the an-nual Daughters of Penelope lunch-eon. The luncheon was delightful.
The "Koulouraki Contest" was fun, and we appreciate our GOYA as-suming the role of judges. The
winner of the "Koulouraki Contest" was Sylvia Bal. A children's book sale (covering Greek traditions such as Vasilopita and the red East-
er eggs) was held, and the author was present to sign the books. It was lovely that it fell on the same
day as Godparents' Sunday. It was so nice to see the children receive Holy Communion with their God-
parents and then, together, enjoy the luncheon.
We must commend the P.T.O.
for all their efforts and dedication to observe their annual Valentine's Dance. All who attended had a
great time. They always do a terrif-ic job on whatever project they un-
dertake. Thanks to them for their
constant dedication to the children of our Parish.
Marriage Preparation Seminars are now being held throughout the area for 2014. Please contact Fa-
ther for further information if you are planning a wedding this year.
The Community expresses its
deepest sympathy to the following families: To the family of Susan Shola. She
was a lovely intelligent individual and will be missed; to the family of John Agronis. He was a fine
gentleman, a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather and will be missed by many, especially his grandchildren; to the family of
Estelle Hawie. She was a past pres-ident of the Daughters of Penelope. She was a kind, compassionate
individual, a loving wife, a dedicat-ed mother, and a devoted grand-mother who will be very much
missed; to Panayiota Koukoulias and family on the re-cent death of her brother in Greece; to
Fay Hasiotis on the death of her brother-inlaw in Stamford; to Peter Halkias on the recent death of his
brother-in-law in Australia. May all their Memories be Forever
PTO by Effie Vlamis, President
I t may seem redundant to keep
thanking everyone who has supported the PTO over and over
again, but without your help, our major events would not happen as they should. That being said, our fundraisers are done, and for the next few months we
will focus our attention on our spiritual well-being,
and also on having some fun with our
youth. The month of March is busy, and we will follow through with our faith and tradition, looking forward to Lent and
then Easter. For March, we have the following events and activities planned:
March 3rd, Monday—Kathari Deftera, from 5-
7pm Lenten potluck in the Aegean room. The
