FEBRUARY 2014 3

I would like to wish each of

you and your families a

happy, healthy, and prosperous

New Year. Our community

kicked off the new year with a

successful New Year's Eve

celebration, sponsored by our

PTO. The next morning, we

celebrated the Feast-day of Saint

Basil with the Divine Liturgy.

We are reminded that, with

every endeavor, we must always

begin with God, and this

includes the dawning of the New

Year when we are granted an

opportunity by Almighty God to

renew our faith and zeal. We are

given an opportunity to make “New Year's

resolutions” not only for our earthly lives, but also for

our spiritual lives.

We enter the New Year with a renewed zeal to eat

healthier and to exercise more. We should also

approach the New Year with this same zeal to renew

our baptismal vows by embracing the sacrament of

repentance and forgiveness. Christ taught us that the

way into the Kingdom of Heaven is through inner

transformation and repentance. Repentance is the

conversion of our hearts to love and forgive those who

hate and persecute us. If we begin this inner

transformation on an individual

level, we can achieve a

transformation on a community

level. Therefore, let us all come

together united in Christ to

make this year an even holier

one

As we transition into the New

Year, I would like to thank

George Mourizakis, our former

parish council president and his

wife, Maria, for their years of

service, love and dedication to

our Church. I thank him for his

many accomplishments over the

years and pray that he will

continue to use his talents for

service in Christ’s vineyard.

I would also like to welcome

our new parish council board

and the new president of our parish council, Kostas

Vlamis and his wife Effie and family. I wish him and

the entire parish council the blessings of our Lord

Jesus Christ and pray that God gives Kostas strength

and guidance as he leads our Holy Trinity Community

forward into the future.

It was a blessing to have Archbishop Demetrios here

with us to celebrate the New Year, and we thank him

for his paternal blessings and support.

Again, Happy New Year to all of you!

New Year 2014 by Father Andreas Vithoulkas

Our Parish by Constantinos Vlamis ,

Parish Council President

S even years ago, I

decided to join the

Parish Council

thinking I needed to give

something back to God by

offering my services to my

Church. My son, Raphael,

was finally home, we were

weaning him off oxygen,

and he had just started

taking baby steps with a

walker. The fact that he

could breath on his own

gave me energy enough to move

a mountain. It was a sign from God to have a beautiful angel

with us who essentially was not

expected to survive a year

of his life. That's when I

knew it was my time. I

joined the Parish Council.

Seven years later, on this

past Sunday, I took Raph

by the hand, and took him

up to receive Communion .

He walked up to Father

Andreas, opened his

mouth , and received. We

didn't even have to hold

him up! Seven years later,

it was time to step it up for

my community, my

Church, and God!

With health, hope, faith,

and humility,

“How many ears must one man have before he can hear people cry?”

Ladies

Philoptochos

Society by Lena Protopapas, President

K A Λ H X Ρ O N I A -

XAΡOUMENO TO 2014

J anuary is a month with a

lot of celebrations. My

favorite are two: St.

Basil’s Day and the Three

Hierarchs’ Day.

The first one brings back

memories of the time when I

was a little girl and my father

would dress up as Santa Claus,

bringing us the gifts in a big

bag, when the old year was

leaving us and the new one was

starting. St. Basil, the Greek

Santa, was coming and would

bring a lot of gifts that would

give us joy for a whole year!

That night, we couldn’t sleep

because all of us kids were playing

together with our new toys.

The next day, my Grandma

would take all of our old toys

and became “Santa,” giving

them to the less fortunate kids

in the orphanage.

St. Basil taught us that the

“Bread in your box belongs to

the hungry, the cloak in your

closet belongs to the naked, the

shoes you wear belong to the

barefooted, the money in your

vault belongs to the destitute.”

Following his teachings, in 1944,

the Ladies of Philoptochos

Society established St. Basil

Academy to provide a home,

food, clothes, education, and

happiness to less fortunate

children, giving them a warm

place filled with love, the way

Jesus Christ taught us.

On January 12, 2014, our

Parish celebrated the traditional

cutting of the Vasilopita bread ,

which reminds us of the special

commitment we have to the

children of the Academy of St.

Basil. The Ladies Philoptochos

Society has the responsibility of

being the primary financial

supporter, and is also the

coordinator of the National

Vasilopita tradition, which St.

Basil left for us to continue.

Congratulations to G.O.Y.A. ,

who received the golden coin in

their Vasilopita piece. We wish

you the very best, and God

Bless you. We would like to

thank all of you who attended

and contributed to our Vasilopita

Event, making it a success.

On January 25th, 2014, we

will visit Saint Basil Academy

together with P.T.O. to cut the

Vasilopitas there and bring some

gifts to the children.

Ι want to thank all the ladies

who helped in our reception for

celebration of Vasilopita. We

also offered to all of our

children brownies and juice on

that day. Τους ευχόµαστε Υγεία

και Καλή Πρόοδο για το νέο

χρόνο.

The second big celebration

is the three Hierarchs’ Day, on

January 30th, when we celebrate

all three together - Basil the

Great, Gregory the Theologian

and John the Chrysostom. The

three Hierarchs are the

protectors of the Greek Letters,

the Teachers and the Students.

All three of them fought not

with weapons, but , with their

teachings (always in Greek

Language ) to establish the

Christian Religion the first

difficult centuries of

Christianity. Think about how

much courage they must have had

to fight with the hostile

authorities of the time and teach

the truth of Jesus Christ ‘s

teachings. They demonstrated

their love to the people by

e s t a b l i s h i ng Ho s p i t a l s ,

Orphanages, Libraries , Schools ,

and Centers for the Poor. I

admire them for their Great

works and their success in

glorifying the Christian Paideia

during those difficult times. Later

on, their followers were arguing

on who, among the three, was the

greatest ! Our Church resolved

the issue by establishing a

common day for celebration of all

three together.

February is Heart Disease

awareness month. Please show

your support by wearing Red.

We continue to collect

coats, children’s pajamas (new) ,

and books. Please be generous!

Also, we start the Food

Collection for Easter (for

Americans and Greeks). Please

be generous again. Thank You.

The date for our Regular

Meeting is February 4, 2014, at

7 PM.

This month, we will make

Dinner for 250 people at the

Rescue Mission Center. We

need your Help. Thank you.

It will be a fun event for all!

We are completing our Let’s Keep Them Warm

Drive. We had a very successful year and have given

out over 1,000 items to twelve charities such as

Hospital. We would like to give a big thank you to all

who donated and made a difference to all those in need.

We would also like to acknowledge all those people in

the greater Bridgeport community who left us hand-

knitted items in all our collection boxes. We would also

like to thank the business that supported us by

having a box collection box in their stores. It

all made a difference.

2014 will bring another year of Acts of

Kindness. Look out for the dates of our mini-

drives, which will be held on dedicated

Many thanks to the Philoptochos

for sponsoring the annual Vasilopeta

celebration. All proceeds went to-

wards St. Basil Academy. The win-

ner of the coin was found in the

GOYA piece. Much good luck to

our youth. Also, many thanks to the

P.T.O. for providing the Vasilopetes

for the Sunday School.

The P.T.O. is presently working

on their annual Valentine's Dance.

They did such a fantastic job in

sponsoring the New Year's Eve Gala

that we are sure that this, too, will be

outstanding. Please support them

with tickets or ads for they are con-

stantly dedicated to our children.

The Dance is February 8th (with a

snow date of February 15th).

Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs.

Christos Katsetos on the engagement

of their lovely daughter "Soula". A

Spring wedding is planned and we

wish the couple "happy planning".

Congratulations to John Johnson

on recently receiving the "Medal of

Honor" from France. John was one

of our soldiers, with his group, who

went into France during World War

II to help liberate their country. He

was presented the Medal at a beauti-

ful ceremony held at the French

High School in New York. We are

very proud of John and indeed of all

of our veterans who so gallantly

fought during that War to preserve

our freedom.

Congratulations to our parishioner

Maria Karayiannis, DMD, on the

opening of her new office "My

Smile Orthodontics", located at 865

River Road, Suite 307, in Shelton.

much success in her new venture.

Many thanks to our Golden Senior

that they did during the Holidays,

preparing beautiful items that were

presented to our shut-ins and Nurs-

ing Homes.

Our deepest sympathy to David

and Joanna Bogardus and family on

the loss of David's mother over the

Holidays. Our deepest sympathy to

the family of Eleni (Nitsa) Daoutis

on her recent death. She was a de-

voted parishioner prior to her move

to Florida. She was deeply admired

and respected. After having endured

tragedies in her life, she overcame

them and lived a productive and ex-

emplary life with her deep religious

convictions. May their Memories be

Forever Eternal.

“Better to be silent than to speak without a thought.”

and the night of the dance, and the chairs who

hosted the event. Panta axioies! If you have any photos of the night please post them to our PTO

Facebook page, as these will be added to our Historian’s book.

Congratulations to the Holiday Raffle winners.

One dance over, and the next one, Our Annual Valentine’s Dance, is underway and is scheduled

for Feb 8th (snow date is Feb 15th). Please reserve your table(s), through Effie Vlamis or

Irene Manalis. Look for us downstairs at our

usual spot to reserve a table and to place your heartfelt sentiments in our ad book.

On January 25th, we visited St Basil’s

Academy to deliver the gifts that were collected

from the Giving Tree to the children. More on that in next month’s issue!

Soror i t y G i r l o f t h e M ont h by Stella Katsetos

C ongratulations to our 2014

ABΩ leaders! Eleni Ma-

nesiotis, Irene Bal, Chris-

tina Vlamis, Nikki Hasiotis, Eleni

Demestihas, Nicole Varvaras and

Maria Katsetos. The girls will be taking turns in lead-

ing discussion this year and I can't wait to hear all the

wonderful topics they will be debating.

Maria is up first this month, and she will be re-

searching and presenting on a very interesting topic,

the history of women in film! These discussion are

part of our public speaker program, which will help

the girls not only practice their skills, but will spark

great conversations between them.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Magdalini Geor-

gakopoulos who celebrates on February 14!

Congratulations to Catherine Odendahl, who is

February's Sorority Girl of the Month! Not only is she

an amazing soccer player but she is a gifted trumpet

player. She has auditioned for the Western Regional

Competition and was one of the few children chosen

to play in the concert in March!!

She has also been chosen for her outstanding aca-

demic achievement, and her aspiration to win a Nobel

Prize! I have no doubt in my mind that she will do

just that! Way to go Cat!

SK: Hi Cat, tell us about one of your favorite expe-

riences here at Holy Trinity.

CO: One of my favorite experiences here at Holy

Trinity was the 2013 Valentine's dance. It was a lot of

fun and very memorable celebrating with friends and

family.

SK: Share with us your goals for the future.

CO: I would like to pursue a career in pathology

and work in a biosafety level 4 lab and study viruses.

I would also love to be nominated and win a Nobel

prize!

SK: Tell us about some personal achievements that

you are proud of .

CO: I am proud of becoming a soaring student in

science, math, and behavior. Hillcrest Middle School

strives to have their students S.O.A.R. and mirror the

qualities of S-safety, O- ownership, R- respect and R

- responsibility. I am also very proud to be a member

of the National Junior Honor Society. I also correctly

diagnosed my friend today. It was a first!

SK: If you were elected to be the first female Greek

president of the United States, what would you do

first?

CO: I would strengthen the Center for Disease Con-

trol. With all the possible pandemics and epidemics

that can occur, it is important to make sure that dead-

ly diseases do not get into the wrong hands.

SK: What qualities do you admire in a great lead-

er?

CO: A great leader should be trustworthy, punctual,

fair and responsible

SK: Lastly, tell us about any volunteer work experi-

ences that you enjoy.

CO: I enjoy being a soccer referee and helping

with my girl scouts.
