2 nd Rebetiko Music Summer School in Skyros, 18 to 25 -07-2010 1 The 2 nd seminar of the rebetiko music summer school will take place in Skyros Island 18-25 of July 2010. The decision is based on the tremendous success of the 1 st seminar which took place 19-26 July 2009. Informative elements can be found in the following websites www.teipir.gr , www.faltaits.gr and www.parapetamenoi.gr . Our ultimate goal is still focused on the creation of an Institution that will contribute in the prospective of a global collaboration exploiting the multicultural communication between the European, the Mediterranean basin countries and other countries all over the world. Essential receiver and helper for this effort will be the everywhere Hellenism that creates “values” and culture and friends who have a permanent interest and want to extend their knowledge for the Greek culture. The valuable vehicle for this effort will be the common language of the folk music. The lessons will be given in the form of seminar for a period of one week based on -The urban musical folklore culture and the contribution of some music instruments, such as bouzouki, guitar, baglama- for the formation of the “style” and “moral” of rebetiko orchestra. The lessons will include theory and practice with the instruments, lectures given by experienced researchers and movies and video. Furthermore the 6 days seminar gives the opportunity for collective work and music practice during the student’s free time in the museum’s magnificent area under the magic Aegean moon light and in traditional taverns of the island. The topics encompass a wide range of subjects focused on: A. The mythological and historical course of Skyros and its contribution to the cultural tradition of Greece. B. The Urban-folk (rebetiko) song including the following topics: Historical and social approach Musical approach. The technical characteristics of bouzouki and the rest traditional instruments (organognosia and construction of folklore instruments).

The mythological and historical course of Skyros and its contribution to the cultural tradition of Greece.A brief but documentary proved historical course of Skyros history and the tremendous contribution of the island in the cultural tradition of Greece. A fantastic trip will be helped with the presentation of “Manos and Anastasia Faltaits Folk and Historical Museum”. The Rare publications and historical documents dating back to the Byzantine era and the time of the Turkish occupation, rare publications from the 16th century and onwards together with both published and private documents relating to the time of the War of Independence (1821) will be presented during the seminars period. The exposure of Items (3000 objects and tools) of everyday life, representing Skyrian history and civilisation guarantee a magic cultural trip.

contributed to the formation of rebetiko concept and folklore song generally in Greece.• The display of the early places where the rebetiko made its appearance and the first steps of its

improvement.• The formation of the rebetiko with the crucial appearance of bouzouki and the contribution of social

bodies and key political and social figures that influenced its evolution (particular solists, composers, diskeries, political institutions).

• Selective presentation of historical and social facts that influenced the evolution of bouzouki (wars, dictatorships, social events etc). Subject for discussion covering this topic will be the tremendous contribution of the Skyrian family of Faltaifs concerning the promotion and establishment of the Urban-Folklore (rebetiko) song (particularly the brothers Kostas and Nikos Faltaits, Intellectual writer and director of Columbia respectively).

• Review of rebetiko revival since 1960 up to now and the socio-economical facts (wars, dictatorships) which attributed its development etc).

2. Musical approachRegarding the musical approach of bouzouki the thematic of the course will be focused and turned round the following aspects emphasising: • The rebetiko orchestra and the integration of bouzouki in this type of orchestra. • The relation of bouzouki with other instruments. • Harmony, rhythms (dances), scales, tropical formation of scales.• Taximia - improvisation

• Development of technique and virtuosity (various approaches)• Presentation of Representative composers – instrumentalist, singers and performers generally.3. The technical characteristics of bouzouki and the rest traditional instruments (organognosia-How the rebetiko instruments are made).• The musical extent of the instruments.• Analytic report of the materials that are used to make bouzouki and rest folklore instruments.• The historiography and the evolution of bouzouki. • The relation of bouzouki with instruments of Mediterranean area countries.During the seminar there will be parallel activities related to it, open and without charge for the tourists and visitors of the island. Indicative subjects that will be covered are:• Historiography of the rebetiko song.• The Faltaits family and its role for the enhancement of the rebetiko. • Projection of movie related to the rebetiko and discussion with the audience.• The presentation of unknown musicians who are the corner stone of the rebetiko. • The procedure that a folklore instrument (bouzouki, kithara) can be made

Skyros has a strong and interesting historical and traditional past and a very promising alternative tourist present and future, as well. The existing facilities of the museum are unique and suitable for organising any kind of international meetings and seminars. The facilities include conference halls, dining hall, library, study, offices etc. and are well equipped with computers, video-projector and microphones. During the seminar will be distributed printing and electronic material. RoomsProperly set and equipped, these rooms are made for materializing a variety of programs. In them representative items of the traditional cultural inheritance of Greece is displayed thus offering to the participants of the various programs the chance to commune the traditional culture of Greece. A unique 1000 seat theatre made of stone, located in the park of the museum. The theatre together with the park is the cultural centre of Skyros Island, and various artistic and cultural events are being held here. It can be of great importance for the meetings, since it is well equipped (sound and light equipment) for holding any kind of cultural activity (concerts, drama, dance etc.). ParkThe park covers an area of 8 acres and it lies on the side of the hill where the museum stands. There are trees and flowers planted and the whole area is formatted in terraces made of stone. There is also open air or partly roofed areas which can be used for holding either different programs or one program with different activities. At the same time the park can be used as a whole for organising big and demanding meetings of organisations and networks of national, European and international level (cultural camps, concerts, cultural marathon meetings etc.).Seminar’s basic languages: Greek and English.The musical instruments, which will be used, for the live performances, during the seminar, will be the three (3) classical instruments of the rebetiko orchestra: Bouzouki, guitar and Baglama. For certain songs instead of bouzouki will be used the very close related with bouzouki instrument Tzouras, which produces a different and more traditional “sound-colour”. Time period and duration of the seminar:The seminar will last from 18 to 25 July 2010 and the duration of the seminar’s lessons will be 6 days. The lessons for bouzouki and guitar players include 4 hours per day theory and practice with the instrument, lectures given by experienced researchers on Rebetiko field and related movies and video.The educational staff which will be involved during the seminar’s period consisted by active experienced and qualified artists on seminar’s subjects and researchers.Music Performances: During the seminar period will be offered one concert. The music content of the concert will cover Smyrneiko and Peireotiko-rebetiko “style”.Registration fee: The total economic contribution for the seminar is 150 euros including the seminar’s lessons, the workshops and concert ticket, printed and electronic material (CD, DVD). Transport means: You can visit Skyros by two means, by airplane from Athens and Thessalonica or by boat through Kimi seaport. (a) By plane you can reach Skyros twice a week, every Wednesday and Saturday. (b) By boat daily cruises leave from Kimi to Skyros lasting 1h and 45min. (http://www.aia.grhttp://www.airtickets.gr). During the seminar’s period the daily boat cruises are three. Additionally there are boats connected Skyros with the rest islands of north sporades (Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnisos) which consist a unique sea park and give the opportunity for a very interesting and cheap visit.(http://www.yen.gr or http://www.skyros.gr). Biographical note: Spyros Gkoumas was born in Piraeus and his origin is from Asia Minor and Piraeus. He learned about the popular music from his father, who was a musician.He has been playing the bouzouki since he was twelve years old.At the age of sixteen he started working with small popular bands, playing in Piraeus.He took music lessons in Piraeus Association and in 2001 he took his diploma in Byzantine music with excellent. His teacher was Dionisis Iliopoulos.In 1984 he started his recording career, playing for the first time in ‘Minore Tis Avgis’From this day up to nowadays he has taken part in many CD recordings with composers such as:K.Kaplanis, B.Korakakis, E.Karaindrou, D.Savvopoulos, N.Xidakis, D.Papadimitriou and many more. With singers such as: S.Mpellou, T.Mpini, P.Panou, G.Dalaras, E.Arvanitaki, Glikeria, A.Protopsalti, M.Kana, D.Mitropanos, Marinella, E.Tsaligopoulou, G.Kotsiras, D.Mpasis and many more.In live performances he has worked for many years with E.Arvanitaki in concerts in Greece and in many international festivals all over the world (Womad).He has also worked with E.Karaindrou playing in 10 in Melina Merkouri theatre, with H.Alexiou in 1991 in Attikon and in 2004 in Botanikos, with D.Galani in 2007 in Rex, with G.Dalaras in 2008 in Ianos, with M.Mitsias in 2009 in the Concert Hall, with D.Savvopoulos in 2005 in a festival (EXPO) in Japan, with Alk.Ioannidis, in many concerts in Greece, with N.Portokaloglou, with O. Peridis, with Robert Plant in Rodon Club playing the Led Zeppelin song ‘Thank You’ in a bouzouki version.Since 1996 he has been giving lessons for bouzouki, mpaglamas, lout, mandolin, popular guitar and tambour.
