Road Network - Vision, Targets and

    Strategic Planning

  • After 1974 our first priority was the network connection of the ports and airports with the Capital and the other main urban centers situated, mostly on the southern coast line of the island. This was necessary due to the urgent need for re-activation of commerce, Tourism and passenger movement and the need for the quick recovery of the economy.

  • Our next target is a carefully designed, sustainable and environmentally friendly network connection of the capital and the main urban centers with the mountains, agricultural and rurally isolated areas, as a measure to maintain the population in their villages and thus prevent urban attraction.

The economy of these areas was for many years based on agriculture, which is now declining. The efforts made to turn to agro-tourism are hindered by the poor interconnection of these regions to the national network.

These roads will help development and will help to maintain their economic and territorial cohesion with the rest of the country and Europe

This is a long standing demand by the inhabitants of these communities so as to offer an acceptable standard of living and to encourage young people to continue living there.
