The life of Elder Paisios 1924-1994

Amongst the many Greekswho lived in Farasa,Cappadocia Asia Minorwas a pious couple namedEznepidis, who had a sonon 25 July 1924. The babywas baptized by FatherArsenios the Cappadociana few weeks after his birthand was given the nameArsenios whilst foretellingthe baby’s future life as amonk. In accordance with theTreaty of Lausanne theGreeks were forced to leave Asia Minor, resulting inFather Arsenios guiding his flock of displaced anddemoralised families along the 400-mile trek to Greecewith the Eznepidis family eventually settling in Konitsa,Epirus, after a few stops along the way. At the age of 84,Father Arsenios reposed forty days after his groupsettled in Greece, as he had prophesied, leaving as hisspiritual heir the infant Arsenios. Since 1970, manyapparitions and miracles have occurred near his holyrelics, which reside in the Monastery of Souroti. Ourfather among the saints Arsenios the Cappadocian(1840–1924) was recognized as a saint by thePatriarchate of Constantinople in 1986 and His feastday is November 10.Arsenios the younger, grew up in Konitsa and aftercompleting his elementary study to intermediate publicschool level, he learned the carpentry trade, where heworked until his mandatory military service.During the latter part of World War II and thedangerous civil war which followed, Arsenios served asa radio operator and was noted for his bravery, self-sacrifice and moral righteousness, being discharged in1949. He had a duty to provide for his unmarriedsisters’ future, which he achieved and was thereforefree to pursue his monastic vocation at Mt Athos in1950. Four years as a novice, Arsenios enriched hisspirituality by reading soul-profiting books on the livesof Saints, the Gerontikon and the Ascetical Homilies of

St Isaac the Syrian, as well as completing hisobediences. Arsenios was tonsured a monk and giventhe name Averkio at Esphigmenou Monastery; laterplacing himself under obedience to the Elder Symeonwho gave him the Small Schema in 1956 with the newname Paisios.Fr Paisios was asked to spend time in the region of hishometown where he supported the faithful against theproselytism of Protestant groups and in 1962 he visitedSinai, spending two years amongst the Bedouins whobenefited spiritually as well as materially from hispresence, as he bought them food with the income fromthe wooden handicraft he carved.Returning to Mt Athos in 1964 Fr Paisios took upresidence at the Skete of Iviron before moving to thedesert region of Katounakia where he remained for ashort time, departing due to ill-health. Part of his lungswas removed in 1966 during which operation FrPaisios needed a blood transfusion, which blood wasprovided by a group of novices from the monastery ofSt John the Theologian in Souroti (just outsideThessaloniki), for which he was very grateful. As aresult, his long friendship began and he did whateverhe could thereafter, to assist materially and spirituallythe young sisterhood to build their monastery.Residing in the monastery of Stavronikita from 1968, FrPaisios was blessed to be in close contact with theascetic Elder Tikhon who lived in the Hermitage of theHoly Cross and by whose side he stayed until hisrepose, serving him selflessly as his disciple. Duringthis period Elder Tikhon clothed Fr Paisios in the GreatSchema and according to his wishes, after ElderTikhon’s repose, Elder Paisios remained in hishermitage where he stayed until 1979 when he movedto the hermitage Panagouda belonging to themonastery of Koutloumousiou. The sick, frail and suffering people of God gravitated toElder Paisios as his fame grew – he received them allday long, dedicating the nights to God in prayer, vigiland spiritual struggle, with minimal time for rest of hisbody and sleep. As a result of his ascetic life andsensitive nature Elder Paisios was increasingly prone to

sickness initially with respiratory problems, latersuffering from a serious hernia, making life verypainful.Leaving the Holy Mountain for various periods, mostlydue to his illnesses, he would continue to receivepilgrims at the women’s monastery of Souroti, despitehis ailing health, pain and frailty.Elder Paisios also suffered from haemorrhaging whichleft him very weak, often falling unconscious. Fortreatment in Thessaloniki Elder Paisios went on 5October 1993, believing it was to be only for a shorttime. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with cancerwhich required immediate treatment – recovery was inhospital after which he transferred to the monastery atSouroti despite his fervent wish to return to hisbeloved Holy Mountain. For the next six months, despitehis failing health, Elder Paisiosreceived people at Souroti, listening to their sorrows, counselling them and providingspiritual guidance - hisreputation grew more widely ashis bodily suffering intensified.Receiving the Holy Communionfor the last time on 11 July,Elder Paisios gave his soul intoGod’s keeping on 12 July 1994(13 days short of his 70thbirthday). According to hiswishes, Elder Paisios wasburied at the Monastery of St.John the Theologian in Souroti, where the relics of St Arseniosthe Cappadocian, his godfatheralso lie!Living in the modern age and atthe same time living in unionwith God, Elder Paisios confronted the problems of ourtimes with directness and courage. Deeply grounded inwisdom of the ancient Holy Fathers and partaking oftheir life of holiness and ascesis, he passed on thispatristic wisdom in a manner that is down-to-earth and

accessible. He was a simple man with few materialneeds and his teaching powerfully touches the heart, kindling in it the same divine love that abundantly filledthe Elder Paisios.“Things are very simple, and there is no reason whywe should complicate them. If we regard matters inthis way, we will feel the Jesus Prayer as a necessityand will not grow weary. We will be able to repeat itmany times and our heart will feel a sweet pain, andthen Christ Himself will shed His sweet consolationinside our heart.”

“Those who come close to people in pain naturallydraw near to God, because God is always by the sideof His children who are in pain”.Some books of his counsels have already beenpublished and the monasteryat Souroti has undertaken topublish the Elder’s writingsand counsels for the futurebenefit of all. Some epistles tothe abbess and sisters includethe following counsels, whichcan be of inestimable benefitto everyone:

“Kindness softens and opensup the heart, as oil opens arusty lock”.

“When someone gives hisheart to God, then the mindof this man is also seized bythe love of God. He isindifferent towards worldlythings and continuallythinks about the HeavenlyFather and being divinely inlove, he glorifies his Creatorday and night like an angel”.Elder Paisios, perhaps more than any othercontemporary elder of our church, captured the mindsand hearts of the Greek people within Greece and thediaspora including the Antipodes.

The life of Elder Paisios 1924-1994

My pilgrimage to the resting place of Elder PaisiosVisiting the place of birth, burial grounds or churches ofour Saints, kindles in pilgrims questions about theirown mortality and emotions about their role and placein the world they live. On our first family holiday inJune 1976 we attended the monastery of Souroti on theoutskirts of Thessaloniki for vespers and prayers – wewere impressed with the melodic chanting of the nunsand pleasantly surprised at the number of youngprofessional women who had chosen to devote theirlives to our Lord as nuns at Souroti.Since the mid-1970s, at the invitation of our PrimateArchbishop Stylianos, a number of spiritual fathersfrom Mt Athos visited Australia, usually during theperiod of Great Lent. In 1977 Elder Paisios came withFather Vasileios, the then Abbot of Stavronikita, visiting most mainland cities to heal the spiritualwounds, preach to the faithful and accept confession. They were in Adelaide on 15/16 March 1977, whenour family was humbled, honoured and blessed toprovide hospitality in our home to these spiritualfathers from Mt Athos. It was with the strong memory of our familypilgrimage to Souroti in 1976 and Elder Paisios’ visitin 1977, that I fervently wanted to pay homage atElder Paisios’ final resting place seeking his blessing. On 26 June 2011, with trepidation and much humilityI took my relatives to Souroti in order to pray at theplace where the relics of Elder Paisios rest.It was a heart-wrenching pilgrimage - there weremany people visiting this holy place, individuals andfamily groups, each with their own problems, thoughts and burdens. The atmosphere was quiet andserene - the pilgrims, with bowed heads andreverence prayed for forgiveness and for spiritualenlightenment. For me it was an emotionally chargedpilgrimage, daring to draw on the simplicity, teachingsand humility of Elder Paisios, whilst reflecting on myown life, my family, our community and the frailty ofhumanity. With silent prayers, seeking his blessingand guidance, I left the grave of the simple yetprofound Elder Paisios – a man who lived andpreached in our lifetime!

In the shadows of the Church bearing the name of hisgodfather, the final resting place of this holy man isvery plain with a wooden cross and a kandili. Pilgrimsare welcome to pray and light their candles on thegrave which has a white plaque with the words:“Εδώ τελείωσε η ζωή, Εδώ και η πνοή μου,εδώ το σώμα θα θαφτή θα χαίρη κι η ψυχή μου.Ο Άγιός μου κατοικεί, αυτό είναι τιμή μου.Πιστεύω Αυτός θα λυπηθή την άθλια ψυχή μου.Θα εύχεται στον Λυτρωτήνάχω την Παναγιά μαζί μου”.(Μοναχός Παΐσιος Αγιορείτης)

On 17 May 2011, the Church of Saint George was emptied of its furniture and reverently relocated to the newly fashionedtemporary church in the Community hall, so that the renovations could commence for the noise abatement program fundedby the Australia Government.

Negotiations had commenced for this project a couple of years ago due to the fact that our church building and its small hallwere within the flight path to Adelaide Airport. It was suggested that the project would be completed quicker if thecompany had full access to the building, making it a worksite and closing it off completely (instead of attempting toprogress it whilst regular church services were being conducted). Realising the inconvenience and hardship for theCommunity, the College and the parishioners, the Executive Committee determined the total closure of the Church for 4months was more desirable than having services in an “ongoing live worksite” for 10+ months.

As weddings and christenings are planned and booked months and years in advance, it became necessary, with the fullagreement of those involved, to relocate some of these ceremonies to other Churches. We thank those parishionersinvolved, for their understanding and co-operation, as well as the other parishes of our Archdiocese for their support.

The College community of students, teachers and parents were affected with worksite noises and parking problems, whichissues were kept to a minimum, as a result of good planning and prior advice to all involved.

The Senior Citizens refrained from having their regular meetings, and the Byzantine Choir was partially affected during thisperiod - we thank them for their support and understanding.

The inclement weather, which is beyond our control, has thrown the project off-target by a few weeks, which completiondate now appears to be the first week in October.

As can be observed through the perimeter fencing, the Church’s appearance has improved aesthetically, with minimisationof aeroplane noise having been achieved. The vastly improved Church has reinforced walls and roof structure, canwithstand earthquakes, with new electrical and electronic wiring and an upgraded air conditioning system.

We are grateful to all our parishioners and visitors to our Church and College, for their support, understanding, patience andco-operation during these four months of renovation. We acknowledge the hard work of the crew, who were veryconscientious and with reverence undertook the renovations. We sincerely thank the Australian Government for fundingthis project.

Saint George College is in its 28th year of operation with many graduates progressing through tertiaryeducation to their chosen profession and careers. There was merriment and glees of recognition as old scholars rekindled friendships and acquaintances. It was amazing how quickly the intervening years faded and business cards were exchanged!Mr Peter Piliouros, lawyer and Mr Bill Gonis Physiotherapist are old scholars of our College and aremembers of the Board of Governors, which manages the operations of Saint George College. The creationof an Old Scholars Association “Alumni” is the next step within the College’s Strategic Plan.Peter and Bill have undertaken a leading role in the development of the Old Scholars Association sincebecoming members of the Board in 2009.In the presence of over 70 invited old scholars, Peter and Bill outlined the purpose and role of the“Alumni”.The Principal, Mr George Panagopoulos gave a detailed overview of the history of the College to date, thegrowth and its current enrolment profile. He advised on building projects in progress and highlighted theimportance of the Old Scholars to the future plans. He asked graduates to advise ex-scholars of theestablishment of the “Alumni” and to keep abreast of developments through internet, where membershipenrolment forms are available. In concluding the launch, Very Rev Diogenis Patsouris was moved when reflecting on his personalmemories of the initial hardships 30 years ago, whilst glowing in his comments about the current positionof the College. He fervently invited those present to make every effort to get involved with Peter and Billin the establishment of the Organising Committee; asking old scholars to promote in a positive way and tore-connect with “your College”, thereby playing a pivotal role in its future.Father Diogenis finished by saying“You are the fruit of Saint George College, you are its ambassadors. With muchenthusiasm, the students were challenged to beat their own best records, as well as those of the otherteams in the friendly annual athletic competitions. The day ultimately belonged to the blues – Pella – Alexander the Great team excelled; followed bySparta with Olympia third and then Athens.Because it was also the national “RU OK? day” students were reminded to be vigilant, aware of peoplearound them and to provide support and comfort wherever possible. The Principal, Dr Panagopouloscongratulated all the athletes for their endeavours and acknowledged the hard work of Mrs Ford andMr Rodas in the planning and execution of the 2011Sports Day.No doubt all those who participated in events, slept well that night…..
