This a7Rii stabilization system is fine-tuned for high-resolution image sensors to compensate accurately for five types of camera shake that can compromise handheld shooting of the camera's 42.4-megapixel images. Camera shake compensation is equivalent to using a 4.5-step faster shutter speed, allowing you to take advantage of a wider range of shutter speeds.


Higher-resolution 4K movie recording

a7Rii Silent Shooting features an electronic shutter that causes no vibration, so you can shoot high-resolution images without camera shake. This mode also operates without a sound, so it's very convenient for shooting without disrupting indoor performances and outdoor wildlife, and in all other situations where silence is essential. More precise white balance adjustment

The a7Rii offers more white balance adjustment steps (twice as many on the amber-blue axis; four times as many on the green-magenta axis) than before, so you can finely tune white balance with more subtle precision for more natural colors.


Bright Monitoring

This function that boosts image brightness by changing shutter speed, for example, can be assigned to a customizable button for easy access when shooting a starry sky or other dark scene.


1200-zone Evaluative Metering

Ample data from 1200-zone metering and focal plane phase-detection AF points allows for more precise control of light volume from an external flash that complements ambient light. Choose Multi-segment, Center-weighted or Spot-metering mode.


ISO Auto Minimum Shutter Speed

Prevent blur in a shot of a moving subject by setting a shutter speed at which ISO sensitivity starts changing when ISO AUTO (while in P or A mode, or in Multi Frame NR) is selected.


Priority setup in AF-C/AF-S

In AF-S (Single-shot AF) or AF-C (Continuous AF) mode, choose AF priority for taking pictures only when subject is in focus, Release priority for taking pictures even when subject is not in focus, or Balanced Emphasis for balancing the AF and Release options to achieve accurate focus, yet not miss a decisive moment when shooting moving subjects.


AF-A mode

In this mode, press the shutter button halfway down, and the camera automatically recognizes whether the subject is moving or not, then switches AF mode accordingly between AF-S to lock on a subject in focus and AF-C to keep adjusting focus. This versatility is useful for shooting various subjects at the same time, or to avoid switching AF mode manually.


Creative Style

Creative Style settings bring out the character of your scene. Simply select any of 13 settings (Vivid, Portrait, etc.) and the a7Rii camera will adjust image parameters. You can also fine-tune contrast, saturation and sharpness to suit your preference.


D-range Optimizer (DRO)

In difficult lighting, DRO corrects your images to achieve smoother, more natural gradations with more detail in the highlights and shadows. You can use it during continuous shooting and when photographing moving subjects.


Auto HDR (High Dynamic Range)

Auto HDR composites the best details from three exposures to expand the dynamic range of your images from darkest shadows to brightest highlights and a7Rii capture all the tonal gradations seen by your naked eye.


Multi Frame NR (Noise Reduction)

This mode composites four shots to significantly suppress noise and raise sensitivity, letting you clearly capture dark scenes without a tripod or flash. Camera shake blur is also lowered while contrast and detail are raised.

Vibration-free: Sony has doubled-down on reducing shutter-induced vibration on the a7R II. The new shutter mechanism reduces vibration by 50%, and the electronic first curtain eliminates it entirely - and allows for silent shooting.

5-axis image stabilization: As with the a7 II, the a7R II offers sensor-shift image stabilization that corrects for translation, roll, yaw, and pitch movement.

4K video: The Alpha 7R II reads out its whole sensor to capture 4K video in either full-frame or Super 35 format with a full suite of manual controls as well as headphone and mic jacks. Phase-detection makes for usable AF in video.

State-of-the-art sensor and autofocus: While we're yet to see for ourselves, the a7R II's 42MP BSI-CMOS sensor sounds promising. Perhaps more exciting is its Hybrid AF system which has 399 on-sensor phase detect points that cover 45% of the total frame. You'll be able to take advantage of the speed and tracking abilities of the system on third party lenses as well, using the appropriate adapters.

A 5-axis stabilization system, redesigned mirror and electronic shutter should ensure shake-free images whatever the cause, and the new back-illuminated sensor is capable of capturing 4K video. The 399-point phase-detection AF system looks seriously impressive, too.

The a7R II marks a huge step forward for the a7 series, moving to BSI CMOS technology and increasing the pixel count to 42.4MP. The new sensor – now image stabilized – is able to shoot 4K video, even when cropped down to use the Super 35-sized region. Probably the most exciting addition is an autofocus system that looks promising when used with DSLR lenses (including those not from Sony).

What’s particularly disruptive is that all these benefits carry over to 3rd party DSLR lenses, possibly making the a7R II the world’s first truly hybrid camera.

Things to consider

Lossy Raw: The a7R II continues the trend of not offering a lossless 14-bit Raw option for maximal image quality, which means you may experience artifacts at high contrast edges, particularly when post-processing.

Short battery life: When shooting with the LCD you can take 340 shots per charge before running out of juice (using the CIPA standard), which pales in comparison to what full-frame DSLRs can pull off.

Only one memory card slot: Unlike the top-end full-frame DSLRs from Canon and Nikon, the A7R II has one memory card slot instead of two.

On the pricey side: With an MSRP of $3200 the a7R II is more expensive than the Canon EOS 5D III and Nikon D810. Sony's FE lenses also tend to be on the higher end of the price spectrum.

Unlike previous a7-series cameras that each have particular strengths or features, the flagship of sony a7RII does everything well. Unless you need to shoot in near darkness where Sony A7S still has an edge at extreme ISOs, the a7RII would be great choice for everything you shoot.
