Iwasfortunateenoughtoreceiveanemail from my friend in the ROPE Tokyo,Mr. Tanaka, who is also an honorarymemberoftheSMA.Ienjoytheshipmodelsthat he scratch builds, which are allJapanese ship models of a very early era.Hiscurrentworkinprogress isariverboat,theKawa-Gozabunein1:50scale.Hewrites:“It’sariverboatusedbythelordoftheEdoperiod for Sankinkotai”. The followingphotos show his work in progress and thetechnique of building parts off the modelseparately and then incorporating these

partsonto theshipmodel. Ibelieve thephotosare takenas themodel isbeingbuilt– inorder. The first photo above is of thehull, the secondphoto is of the scratchbuilt cabin(apparently they were very fancy androomy–Iamsurethedetailsarecorrect) Notethedetails, whichyouwillnotsee once the roof is installed on thestructure. Also note the details inside the“cabins”.IalsoassumethedifferentwoodsusedareJapanesewoodsliketheonesyouobtain in the Woody Joe ship model kitsfrom Japan. The details extend to thehanging picture on the wall in themiddleuppercabin.Iwonderwhatdetailisinthelower cabins that you cannot see. The roof photo shown to the left isonlyofthefirsttwocabins, asyouwillnotethatthemiddlecabinishigherthanthetwofore and aft. It sure looks like bamboo isbeing used for the roof, although I do notknow exactly what material Mr. Tanakausedtobuildthem. The following and last photo showsthe model at its current state, not yetcompleted.IhopethatMr.Tanakawillsendme another photo of the model oncecompleted so I can enjoy all the details of

the model. The Japanese lords of the Edo period must have traveled in real style andcomfort!

Fifteengiantsheetsofplans(which are very hard to understand) alongwith a 32-page instruction booklet (also veryhard to understand) are supposed to make the construction of the model easy. The doadmit that the model is designed for “advanced level” modelers.
