CoronaVirusCancellationofSMAMeetings

As everyone in the SMA is awareof at this time, the SMAMeetings for thenearfuturehavebeencancelled.Itishopedthatthecurrentsituationimprovesinthe next fewmonths and thatwewill be able to conduct our shipmodeling clubmeetingsonceagain. TheMayflowerGroupmeetingshavealsobeencancelledforthe same reason. Your editor has made an effort to contact some of the SMAmembersaskingforinformationontheprogressoftheirshipmodelingefforts,withonlyafewresponsesindicatedhere.IfanyotherSMAclubmemberwishestolethisfellow modelers know what progress he/she is making on their current project,pleaseletyoureditorknowbyfurnishinghimwiththeinformation.

ClydeEmerson

ClydeisalongtimememberoftheSMAand very accomplished in his modeling skills.Clyde writes: I started repairing model shipsand other nautical artifacts for the VellejoGallery, which sold nautical antiques andpainting, in2002. Until a fewyears ago,whenJoeVellejo semi-retired, heowneda galleryonPacificCoastHighwayinNewportBeach.Itwasverymuchlikeasmallmuseum,withhundredsof high-quality pieces. He currently continueshis business part-time with on-line sales,workingoutoftwoadjoiningstorageunits,oneset up as a gallery by appointment only. I did

mymostrecentworkforhimearlythisyear. IgotmyfirstrepairworkwithJoewhenIwentintothegalleryjusttolookaround,as therewasnothing forsale that I couldafford. Heaskedaboutmy interests,and I saidthatIbuiltmodelships. HeaskedifIwouldrepairthem,andIsaidthatIthoughtIcould.Basedon this tentative assurancehe sentmehomewith a shipmodel to repair. Repairscouldbemajororminor,andalmostallpresentedchallengesofonekindoranother.Afewpiecescouldbedoneinthegallery–alittlerigging,addingflags,orsomegluing–butmostIbrought home. A fewwereworth tens of thousands of dollars and all were fragile, so Idrovecarefully. Somemodelsthatrequiredspecialhandlingandskills, likeremovingandelectroplatingmetalpartsona largedockyardmodelor re-riggingabonemodel, he sentelsewhere, usually to England. Except formodels sent overseas, I didmost of hiswork.ThroughJoeIgainedtheexperienceandsometimesreferralsforworkwithprivatepartiesandmuseums.

AnIntroductiontoCAD/CAMModeling

Clyde Emerson, who has used computer assisted equipment in is modeling formanyyears,wouldbegladtohaveinterestedclubmembersvisithishomeinLongBeach,seehisequipmentandmodels,anddiscussshipmodeling,especially theuseofCAD/CAMprogramsandCNCmills.Clydesaysyoumaycontacthimatclydeemerson@aol.com.

YoureditorplanstovisithimsoonandishavingsomethingsdoneforhimbyClydefor his current Roebuck scratch model build. He is also available to make parts formodelers, if making them with his equipment would be advantageous. The cost woulddependonthecomplexityoftheprojectandmaterialsused.Therewillbeanarticleinthenext SMA Newsletter describing many of the things Clyde does with his sophisticatedequipmentthatisgenerallybeyondtheskilllevelofmostmodelers(includingmyself).

Dennissentmemoreinformationonanothermodel thathe scratchbuilt, havingbeen inspired by a fellow SMA member,Henry Bridenbecker, who also built themodel. For those “newer”members of theSMA,Henrywas a foundingmemberof theSMAandprolific scratch shipmodelerwhounfortunately passed away, a very active

Tomyknowledge, it isthethirdanchorhoythat amemberof theSMAhas scratchbuilt –PaulPaynealsobuilt onea fewyears afterDennisandHenry. Dennis writes: The Anchor Hoy was designed to assist large ships to anchor incongestedwaterwaysandharborsbycarryingandraisingheavyanchors.Alargeshiptobeproperly secured in anchorage needs their anchor be dug into the sea bottom a distanceaway from the ship itself, so that the cablewill drape up to the ship in a long curve andusingseveralanchorpoints topullagainst. When leavingtheharborthehoywouldraisethe anchor andbring it to the ship for storage. AnchorHoys alsoweredesigned to carryprovisionsandwaterandshipgearfromshoretoshipandperformedotherserviceduties,especiallyinshipyards. As usual, Bob has a papermodel that he has beenworking on downloaded fromwww.ecardmodels.com.Heprintedthemodelusinglettersize110lb.paperbutsuggestedthatthemodelerusetheheavierstockrecommended.Themodelofthefatmanbombandtrailer,thesecondoftwonuclearweaponsusedonAugust9,1945tohelpendtheSecondWorld War, is 9 inches long, 3 ¾ inches wide and 3 inches high mounted on a trailer.Althoughitisnotashipmodel,itstillmakesanicemodelfordisplayforthepapermodelerswhowishtoconstructit.BobalsorelatesthatthefigurecutoutsinoneofthepicturesisofOppenheimerandGeneralGroves.

ChrisiscontinuingworkonhisHMSBellona,nowworkingonhissailsforthemodel.Chrissentmepicturesofhissailmakingeffortonthebowspritofthemodel,usingthesailsheobtainedfromCorel,whichwereoriginallymadefortheHMSVictory–buttheyfit thesparsofhisshipjustfine.Belowaretwophotosofhiscurrentefforts,whichshowthefineworkhehasaccomplished. Hedidcutthesailstomakethemappearmorerealisticwhenfurled,thenattachedwitharunningknot,foldupunderneaththesparandtietothesparoneverythirdknot.

DonLeyman DonhascompletedhisscratchbuiltmodeloftheHMSPegasusandhasstartedworkonaModelShipwaysBluenose. Hehashadthiskitmodelinhisclosetsincethe2011ShipModel Conference in Newport Beach according to Don. He has just about finished theriggingandisplanningonputtingsailsonit.Comparedtothescratchbuiltmodel,Donsaysthatthismodelisprettystraightforwardexceptfortheshipsboat.ThefirstpicturebelowisshowinghisBluenosealongsidehisPegasus,whichiswaitingforitscase.

NorioUriu

Norio is a member of the ROPE shipmodel club in Tokyo, Japan, and the ROPE is asistercluboftheSMAwithmanymembersoftheROPE attending the Western Ship ModelConferences andmembersof theSMAattendingtheROPEExhibitionsacoupleof times in Japan.Norio is a good friend and also teaching to hisclub members “how to proceed ship modelingfromscratch”.Forthispurposeheismakingtwomodels, one for his lecture and text editing andanother is for his own curiosity of re-arrangingarmament, namely gun allocations. He sentmethosephotosbelowshowinghiswork.

DonDressel

Don is continuingwork on his scratchmodel of theHMSRoebuck and also doingmore researchon the sternandquarter gallery areas. Theanchorandpintalshavebeeninstalled.Theanchoratfirstwasfullymoveable,butDondecidedtocementtheanchorinplacewithmoregoodadvice fromTonyDevroude. Besides, once themodel is completeand in a case you will not be able to move the rudderanyway.Alongwiththerudder,thetillerandtillersweepwerealso installed,whichhastobecompletedbeforethefinalupperdeckbeamsareinstalled.Thesebeams,whichhave tomake room for the tiller, are not as thick as theotherbeamsinordertoallowthetillertopassunderneaththebeams.Anebonybackhasbeeninstalledonthesternwiththewindowscutout,butMUCHmoreworkisneededbefore the stern is completed. According the Tony, thesternisnotexactlyasHaroldHahnshowsitonhisplans–referenceismadetotheORIGINALplansfromGreenwich,England.TherearedifferencesandDonisgoingtotryandincorporatethecorrectsternfeatures.

The second photo shows the deckarea at the stern that still has to becompleted along with the tiller and tillersweepinstalled.Thetwo“dark”beamsarenotyet installedandare just “placed”overthetillertomakesureeverythingfits. Therest of the beams that go over the tillerhaveyet tobemade. Youcanalsosee thecannononthelowergundeck,fullyrigged,which may virtually disappear once theupper deck is planked – required for theupper deck cannon to be installed. Aminimum of several more months will berequired before the stern and quartergalleriesaredone,nottomentiontheupperdeckandtheinstallationof20morecannon.

LloydWarner

Lloyd has sent information on amodelhebuiltwhileworkingontheQueenMaryyearsagoasamodeler.Themodelhebuilt is the Al Bahran, a Persian GulfSambug. It is a Corel model but a lot ofadded scratch detail was added to themodel, including Lloyd’s use of his ownwoods. The model is a reproduction of atypicalsambugofthewatersoftheArabianPeninsula used for both fishing and

transport of goods along the coastal routes of East Africa and the Indian Peninsula. Thesambugmay be traced back to the Portuguese vessels,which, after circumnavigating thecontinentofAfrica, fromthe15thcenturyonwards,advancedalongthesoutherncoastsofAsia. These sailing ships, very widespread up to twenty or thirty years ago, are todaylimitedtothewatersoftheRedSeaandthePersianGulf. Inourcenturysambugscarriedonaprofitablecontrabandactivity/slavetradingfortheMiddleEast. The1:48scalemodelishousedinacasemadebyLloyd.Heuseddraftinglinenforthesalesandalsousedawaterbasedstainonthesailstoobtainthe“used”look.IbelievetheCorelkitoftheAlBahranisstillavailable.Belowareacouplemorephotosofhismodelshowingthewoodsheusedtoreplacethoseinthekit.

The model of the Al Bahran was also on display at the Western Ship ModelConferenceandExhibitinNewportBeachin2011. TherewereanumberofWesternShipModelConference&Exhibiteventsthroughtheyears,alloriginallystartedbyLloydWarnerand the SMA. For those new SMAmembers, Lloydwas amainstay of the SMA from thebeginning,pastpresidentandeditor,aswellastheoriginalorganizeroftheWSMC&E.HecannolongerattendtheSMAmeetingsduetothefactthathelivesinUtah–aratherlongcommute!ManySMAmembersknowLloydforhisexcellentwoodenblocks,shipcases,andwood(expertlycut)thathesuppliedatonetime–nolongeravailabletoday,sadtosay.

SteveLund

Steve wrote: “The Cog was a design that first appeared in the Baltic in the 10thCentury.ItsconfigurationowesadepttotheVikingKnarrthatservedasacargovesselinearlier times in the region. It evolvedout of a need for a higher capacity cargo shipwithbettersea-keepingcharacteristicsandbetterweatherprotectionforcargoandcrew. Bytheearlypartofthe12thCenturytheneedforacargoshipthatcouldbravetheNorthSea,AtlanticCoast,andtheMediterraneanhadevolved.Theprincipledriverwasthebudding “Hanseatic League” of North European merchants wishing to trade throughoutEuropeanportsandfurthersouth. Thevesselswerefittedwithasinglemast,withasquare-riggedsinglesailandfulldeck. They were of lapstrake construction with a flat keel and a dull deck. A newinnovationwasthesternrudder. Fore and aft castles were fitted to facilitate defense and the aft castle served asadditionalpurposeofshelteringthehelmandcrew.

The Cog proved to be the ideal vessel for the “armedmerchantman” fleet of theKnightsTemplar fromtheearly12th through14thCenturies. Shipssuchas thesewith theTemplar cross on their sails, crewed with armed sailors and often Templar knights andsergeants,werethescourgeofMediterraneanpiratesoftheage. Anyonebookingpassageonorshippingcargoesonsuchvesselscouldbeassuredofsafepassageontheshipsoftheoriginal“ClubMed”.TheModel

Thekitisa1/72scaleplastickitfromtheRussianmanufacturerZvezda.AfterIboughtmykitIdiscoveredthat Revell of Germany offers the same model withrevisedboxartandaslightlyhigherpricetag. Payyourmoneyand takeyourchoice, as thesayinggoes. Anall-wood kit in the same scale by the Czech firm ofDusek(picture to the left) is marketed by Model Shipways forroughlydouble thepriceof theplastickit. Since Ihada

deadline to make for a scheduled historical presentation, I opted for the immediatelyavailableplastickit. Butbeingalong-timememberoftheSMA,thethoughtofpresentinganall-plasticsailingshiptothememberswasabhorrent.SoIelectedtokeeptheplastichullforpracticalpurposedbuttotranslatealloftheupperworksandriggingintowoodand(inthecaseofthesailandbanner)cloth. Scored basswood planking for the castles and glued stringer material for thedeckingisavailablefromMicro-Mark,andIhastenedtomakeuseofit.Themastandyardwere fabricated the “old fashioned way” of carving, sanding and tapering dowels to thecorrectconfiguration.SuitablewoodenblocksandcottonthreadwereavailablefromModelShipways to provide the rest of the riggingmaterials. The decking, yard andmastwerestainedlightoakandtheupperworkswerestainedadarkwalnutforcontrast. Theriggingwasabitofasurprise.Weareallfamiliarwiththeriggingon18thand19th Century sailings ships. But what surprised me was to find familiar rigging such astopping lifts, foreandaft staysandstandingriggingona12thCenturyship thatwouldbethoroughlyfamiliartoan18thCenturyseaman. ThetechniqueIusedwastousethekit’smoldedplasticsailasaform.Ilaythethinclothsailmaterialover the formandsaturate itwithseveralapplicationsof spraystarch.Theclothtakesonthewrinkles,seamsandlinesoftheplasticform.OnceI’msatisfiedwiththeappearance,IsprayitwithseveralcoatsofflatlacquersuchasDullcote.Aftertrimmingit I glue rigging thread to the edges to simulate the ropeused andmake the loops at thelowercornersatthesametime.ToportraytheTemplarimageIpaintedtheTemplarCrossemblemonthesailandputtheBoussantbanneratthemasthead. Although I finished the model in time for my presentation, I’m still looking forsuitable figures to portray a largely civilian crew augmented with Templar knights andsergeants.Sotechnically,mumodelisstilla“workinprogress”.
