    YamatoSunk–BobPenikas

    The Yamato-class battleships werebattleships of the Imperial Japanese Navy(IJN) constructed and operated duringWorldWar II. Displacing 72,000 long tonsat full load, the vessels were the heaviestbattleships ever constructed. The classcarriedthelargestnavalartilleryeverfittedtoawarship,nine18.1inchnavalguns,eachcapableoffiring3,220lb.shellsover26mi.Two battleships of the class (Yamato andMusashi) were completed, while a third(Shinano) was converted to an aircraftcarrierduringconstruction.

    Due to the threat of American submarines and aircraft carriers, bothYamato andMusashi spent the majority of their careers in naval bases at Brunei, Truk, and Kure –deployingonseveraloccasions in response toAmerican raidson Japanesebases–beforeparticipatingintheBattleofLeyteGulfinOctober1944,aspartofAdmiralKurita’sCentreForce.MusashiwassunkduringthebattlebyAmericancarrieraircraft.ShinanowassunktendaysafterhercommissioninginNovember1944bythesubmarineUSSArcherfish,whileYamatowassunkinApril1945duringOperationTen-Go.(Wikipedia). The finishedmodel length is 11¼ inches, 4¾ inches wide and 5¾inchestotopofsundisplay.(Seethemodelinthe‘membersmodels-November2019sectionofthisNewsletter-Ed.)HigginsBoat–BobPenikasThelandingcraft,vehicle,personnel(LCVP)orHigginsboat.Bobwrites:OriginallyknownastheEurekaboat,itwasthebrainchildofAndrewJacksonHiggins.Thehard-drinking eccentric New Orleans shipping magnet designed the craft if 1926 as amaneuverable,shallow-draughtmotorbargeforhaulingcargothroughtheLouisianabayou.TheEurekaboat’s‘spoonbill’bowallowedittobedrivenrightupontoabeachorriverbanktounloadcargo,afterwhichthepilotcouldthrowtheengineinreverseandeffortlesslypullbackintothewater.Agrooveintheundersideofthehullpartiallyenclosedthepropeller,enablingthevesseltooperateinlittlemorethanthreefeetofwaterwithoutdamagingtheblades. Higgins expected the Eureka boat to be a big hitwith Gulf ofMexico oil drillers,

    Mississippitrappersandevenwhiskybootleggers.Largeordersfailedtomaterializeandhewasnearlyforcedoutofbusinessduringthedepression-thatisuntiltheU.S.militarytooknoticeofhisunconventionalvessel. ItfamousbowrampwasaJapaneseidea.

    LCVPsideelevationandplan The U.S.Marine Corps became particularly interested in the Eureka boat after anofficer stationedasamilitaryobserver inChina,VictorH.Krulak,witnessed the JapaneseuseofsmallvesselsliketheDaihatsu-classlandingcraftduringthe1937BattleofShanghai.Krulaknotedthattheboats’droppablerampsenabledtroopstoquicklydisembarkfromthebow,ratherthanhavingtoclamberoverthesidesandsplashintothesurf. The Corps asked Higgins, who was already selling small numbers of his Eurekaboats to the Coast Guard and Army Engineers, to modify his design to include a similardrop-ramp. He built a handful of prototypes and demonstrated them. Despite fierceopposition from theNavy’s Bureau of Ships, theMarineswere impressed and eventuallyplacedordersfortheirownfleetofEurekaboats.Morecontractswouldsoonfollow. Itwasawoodenwonder. Despitebeingusedforamphibiousassaults,Higginsboatsweresurprisinglyflimsy.Inorder tokeep thevessel light, and tokeepcosts low, the sidesand rearwere typicallymadeofplywood–not idealmaterial forstoppingbullets,althoughthesteelramponthebowaffordedthetroopssomeprotectionagainstenemyfire,latermodelsweremodifiedtocarryamourplating.HigginsIndustriesbrokenewgroundonproduction. By 1943Higgins’ once small 75-employee shipbuilding business had ballooned tomorethan20,000workers. HiseightmanufacturingplantsproducednotjustLCVPsbutabroadrangeoflandingcraft,aswellatPTBoatsandeventorpedotubes.Atthewarspeak,Higgins’sfactorieswerecrankingout700vesselsamonth.Nootheryardscouldmatchhis

    prodigiousoutput.Andhewasn’tjustamaverickshipbuilder,hewasaheadofhistimeasanindustrialisttoo.Despiterunninghisoperationsintheheartofthesegregatedsouth,hisshopsfloorswerefullyintegrated,withblacks,whites,menandwomenearningequalpayforthesamework.FemalesandAfricanAmericanswereevenpromotedtosupervisory,apracticethatcreatedenemiesfortheNebraska-borntycoonamongLouisiana’selites.Higginstriedtoexpandbeyondboats. As the war continued, Higgins tried to diversify his ship-building enterprise. In1942,heacquiredanaviationcompanyfoundedbyPrestonTucker,whowouldlatermakehistory with his notoriously ill-fated 1948 Tucker sedan, and began manufacturing gunturrets. The following year, Higgins teamed up with visionary aerospace designer EneaBossitobuildhelicopters.TheresultwasasingleprototypeknownastheEB-1.Withthewar’sendin1945,HigginsIndustriesfellonhardtimes.Asordersdroppedoff,productionwasscaledbacktojustasingleplant. Higginshimselfdiedofstomachulcersin1952. Hewas65. Hissonscontinuedhisshipbuildingbusinessuntil1959whentheyfinallysolditoff. Bob’s cardstockmodel is a LCM 3 by PAPERTIGERARMAMENTS.COM. The partswereprintedouton110lb.cardstock. Thefinishedmodel is8incheslong,2incheswideand2incheshigh.HMSRoe-Buck–DonDressel

    Those who have been followingDon’s slow progress on the 44-gun doubledecker frigate will note the way the namehas changed above. The frigate is theRoe-Buck – at least according to theplans fromthe Greenwich Maritime Museum, a set ofthese plans having been ordered for thecarvingofthesternsectionofthemodel,atthe request of TonyDevroude. Not only isthenamedifferent fromtheplansbyHahn,but also parts of the stern and decorationaredifferentontheoriginalplans.Thisjustgoes toprove that checkingall theplans, ifpossible, with the original plan may show

    differences.Alittleresearchcangoalongway! Progressisstillslow,butexteriorplankingportandstarboardisprogressing–withthreewoods being used, ebony, boxwood and parmarfin. Once the exterior planking iscompleted, the stern has to be done. Then the model can be cut from its Harold Hahnbuildingjigandmountedonastandsothemodelwillbeupright.Thiswillallowthecannontobeinstalledonthegundeckpriortoinstallingtheupperdeck,cannonandotherdetails.Meanwhile,thesparsarealsobeingworkedon,madefromlemonwood. MypersonalthoughtisthattheAnthonyRollcannotbeTOOfarfromthetrueshapeoftheshipin1546.IsurewouldliketoinspectSamuel Pepys original ‘rolls’ of the ship, which can be seen today in Pepys Library atMagdaleneCollege,Cambridge,ifIcouldgainpermissiontoseethemANDbeabletotraveltoBritaintodoso.HMSBellona1760–ChrisCarl

    HMSBellonawas a 74-gunBellona-classthird-rateship-of-the-lineoftheRoyalNavy. Designed by Sir Thomas Slade, shewas aprototype for the iconic74-gin shipsof the latter part of the 18th century. Herparticulars were: Tons burthen: 1615 bm(British measurement); length: 168 ft. onthe gundeck and 138 ft. keel; Beam: 47 ft.;Draught: 21 ft.; Depth of hold: 20 ft.;Complement: 650 officers and men;Armament: Lower gundeck: 28 X 32pounders; Upper gundeck: 28 X 18pounders; QD: 14 X 9 pounders; Fc: 4 X 9

    pounders. ChriscontinuesmakingprogressontheHMSBellonabuiltfromaplankonbulkheadCorelkit in1:100scale. Currentworkhasbeenonthemastingandstandingrigging. Themain, top and topgallant masts are all in place. The foremast, foretopmast and foretopgallant shrouds, ratlines, catharpins and futtock shrouds are in place. Themainmastshrouds, ratlines, catharpinsand futtockshroudsare inplaceand themizzen is currentlyfittedwithshroudsandratlinesonly.Burtonpendantsarealsofitted.AmerigoVespucci–BrianStein Amerigo Vespucci is a full rigged three-masted steel hull 270 feet long, with an overalllength of 331 ft. including the bowsprit and amaximum width of 51 ft. She has a draught ofabout23ft.andadisplacementatfullloadof4146tons.Underauxiliarydiesel-electricpropulsiontheAmerigo Vespucci can reach 10 knots and has arange of 5450 nm at 6.5 knots. The AmerigoVespuccihas 26 sails – square sails, staysails, andjibs:allaretraditionalcanvassailstotaling30,400sq. ft. When under sail in severe sea and windconditions she can reach12knots. The rig, some30kmofline,usesonlytraditionalhemp:onlythemooring lines are synthetic, to comply with port

    regulations. The standard crew of the Amerigo Vespucci is 16 officers, 70 non-commissionedofficersand190sailors. Insummer,whensheembarksthemidshipmenoftheNavalAcademy(AccademiaNavale),thecrewtotalssome450.(Wikipedia) Brian’smodelofAmerigoVespucciiswellunderwayandhehasreachedtheendofmanual2oftheinstructions. It isbeingbuiltfromaMantuaPanartkit in1:84scale. Thehull is complete and painted. The website Building Model Boats https://www.building-model-boats.com/tissue-and-dope.html has an excellent write-up on the tissue and dopemethod he used for preparing the hull for painting. The (never ending?) portholes arenearly complete. Each of these has a 3mmacetatewindow installed. Brian has added acompletesetofinteriorLEDswhichareinstalledwiredupandworkingandthiswilladdawholenewdimension fordisplayingof the finishedmodel. All theweatherdecking is inplaceandreadyforthedeckfurniture.ClipperSchoonerSmuggler–1877–JimIngersoll

    SmugglerwasbuiltbyDanielPoland,Jr.andCharlesC.WoodburyatGloucester,Mass in1877forGloucesterinterests.Shewasbuiltfor the mackerel purse-sein fishery. Hertonnage 67.92 gross, 64.52 net wasprobably about average for a vessel in theseiningfleet.(ErikA.R.Ronnberg,Jr.)JimismakinggoodprogressonhismodelofthemackerelschoonerSmugglerbeingbuiltfrom a Bluejacket kit in 1:48 scale. Workcontinues and with the masts in place butnot yet rigged. The bowsprit is ready for

    installation. Theboomandgaff sparsare ready to setup. Themasthoopsareawaitinginstallation. Heisworkingonfloatsforthesein. Adoryhasbeencompletedandpainted.Jimisalsosourcingappropriatelysizedmeshnettingforthesein.

Alsodiscussedweretheshipmodelcasesoncethemodeliscompletedandwheretoobtainthecaseswhenneeded once the model is completed. John and Don both indicated good locations forobtainingacryliccases. Thecasescanbeformedwithwoodorplastic–thewoodenoneshave to bemade by themodeler or from another source, while the plastic cases can beobtainedfromseveralplasticmanufacturers. Alsodiscussedwasthe“steambox”thatcan

    bepurchasedfromROCKLERwoodworkingstores.The“steambox”youmakeyourself,butthesteamapparatusissuppliedwiththe“kit”–plansalsoincludedformakingthe“steambox”.Guydidindicatethatyoucanalsosimplyuseasteamkettle(notyourwife’sunit!)tosteam your planks prior to bending, which he has used to great success. There is anexcellentarticlebySteveWheeler(NRGmember)inthelatestNRJthattalksaboutbendingwoodformodeling.Water(hot)isallyouneed. DonLeymanwasnextup to talkabout the finickystuffhe isnow installingonhisfinelycraftedmodeloftheHMSPegasusbasedonthebooksbyDavidAntscherlandplansobtainedfromGreenwichinEngland.Donhasbuilttheanchorsandmadeandinstalledtheflags. He did an excellent job onmaking the stern light for themodelwhich he passedaroundforeveryoneinthegrouptosee.Donindicatedheusedhislathetohelpmakethelight,whichisnotyetinstalled.HepurchasedsomeswivelgunsfromAmatipartsbuthastoyetinstallthem,sincehewantstoblackenthemusingliverofsulfate.Themethodtodothis

    issuppliedinthebookTheNaiadFrigatebyEdwardJ.Tosti.Theflagsforthemodelweremadeoutofricepaper(hebroughtsometothemeetingandpassedthericepaperaroundfor anyone who wanted same). He does have a problem with the lines for the bracestwistingaroundandanumberofsuggestionsonhowtosolvethisproblemwereofferedbythegroup. DonDresselthenwentovertheslowprogressontheHMSRoebuckandthehelpheisobtainingfrombothTonyDevroudeandLloydWarner.Themakingofthedowelsfortheplankingisbecomingarealproblem,asdrawingbamboothroughadrawplateisNOTverymuchfun.Alternativesolutionstotheproblemarebeingconsidered,sincethisistakingalot of timewithout realizing a final solution. Several suggestionswere offered includingmakingthemoutofanothermaterialratherthanbamboo.Thereisalsothepossibilitythatthe bamboo Don is using is not the best bamboo for drawing through a draw plate. He

    indicated he is now trying to wet the bamboo before drawing it through the drawplate,whichseemstomaketheprocessalittleeasier.AnotherthoughtistoagainusetheVanda-LayIndustriesdowelmaker,butitreallydoesnotworkverywellusingbamboo. Perhapsboxwoodwouldbeabettersolution,whichwillexpeditetheplankingprocessonthemodel.Donalsodiscussedthebuildingprocessoncetheouterplankingiscomplete,asheplanstoremovethemodelfromtheHaroldHahnjigandinstallitonabuildingstandright-sideup,asinstallingthecannonontheinteriordeckswillnotworkwellwhenthemodelisupside-down.Donhasalreadyloston“figure”thatwasinstalledontheorlopdeckandcameloss

    andfelloutduetotheupside-downconditionofthemodelwhileitisbeingworkedon.Theupperdeckbeamscannotbeinstalledbeforethecannonareinstalledonthegundeckandthe guns cannot be installed before the model is right side up. But the hull cannot beremovedfromtheHahnjigbeforetheouterhullisfullyplanked.Whatfun.Also,Donhasdecidedtofullymastandrigthemodel,soLemonwood(Degame)willhavetobeobtainedforthemakingofthemastsandyards. Thereareatotalofabout34sparsthathavetobeturned–whatfun!Nottomentionthecaps,trestletrees,platformsandotherdetails(fids)which have to be made. Then comes the rigging. Finally, the added details like flags,anchors,rudders,etc.All42cannonwillbefullyrigged,ofcourse. JohnVandernautthendiscussedhisprogressontheCongressandthemanychangeshe ismakingonthemodel(whichwas formally theConstitutionkitbyArtensaniabutdidnotresembletheshipatall,accordingtoJohn). Johnindicatedthathisplanking isstill inprogressbutthatthereareanumberofchangeswhichheismakingsinceheisnothappywiththeplankingintheforecastledeckareaHeisalsoworkingonthecannoninstallationaswellasthechannelsandpinrails.Therewasagooddiscussionbythegrouponboththechannelandpinrailinstallationwithstrongsuggestionsthatthesepiecesbestrengthened

    withpinsrunthroughthepinrailsandchannelsvertically–thereisaLOTofpressurewhenrigginglineandnothingisworsethanachannelorpinrailcoming“adrift”whileyouareintheprocessofrigging! Anchorsandtherelocationwerealsodiscussed–portanchorfirst

    andthenstarboardanchor.AreallyexcellentbookSeamanshipInTheAgeOfSailbyJohnHarlandisanexcellentreadonsailingshipsandjusthowtheyweremaneuvered.Ifoneisgoingtoinstallanchors,sailsandotherthingsontheirmodel,itreallyhelpstounderstandjusthowthingsweredone.Everylineonashiphadapurpose.

    Inchapter1thehistoryof theblockaderunnerHOPE is given, startingwith the detailsof her build based on details from theMerseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpoolfollowedbythecareeroftheshipherself.

    Chapter2 isacompleteexplanationof thedetails thatwent into thedrawingof theshipsplansandwheretheprimaryinformationwasobtainedtoproducetheplans. Thedrawingsweredone with a CAD (computer Aided Design) system, which is also fully explained in the chapter.Included is the half breadth plan, the sheer plan and the body plan, which provides all theinformationrequiredtoamodeloftheship. Chapter3providesmanydetailsonthedeckstructuresincludingthepaddlewheel,funnels,paddledecksandboxes, thepaddlewheelsandotherdetailssuchas thegalley,engineroomandpilothouse.Ofrealinterestisthedetailsofthesternandquarterdecorationsthatareonthemodel

    aswellas the fact that theshipwasanEnglishship flyingEnglishcolorsbasedoutof theportofWilmington.Chapter4detailsthedeckandprofileplansagainwithfulldetailprovidedtobeabletomadeaveryfinemodel.Seethephotosbelow.

    Of particular interest tome are thedetailsgiven on the construction of the paddle wheels,which are feathering paddle wheels, the latesttechnology at the time for steamers, all theblockadingsteamersbuiltrequiredspeedabovealltogetaroundtheUnionblockadingships.Ithinkitwould be possible to construct a paddle wheelassembly what would actually move and rotate –thatwouldbearealchallengeforamodelbuilder.The outboard profile is shown below with thedistinctive funnelprofile thatevenmakes theshiplookfastwithoutevenmoving.

    Chapter 5 details the spar, rigging, sail and belay plans whereby the sails can beaddedtothemodelifthemodelerdesires–forandaftsailsalwayslookgoodonthesetypesofshipsanddonothidtherigging.Withtheseplansandthetextinthebook,therewillbenoproblems trying todecide justwhere a linewasbelayedon themodel – everything isthere. Chapter 6 details all that are necessary for construction of the hull, as stationtemplates,lifttemplatesandbulkheadtemplatesareprovidedalongwithafulldescriptionofjusthowthesetemplatesareusedinconstructionofthemodel. Chapter 7 gives a lot of details on bread-and-butter construction for this modelincludingmanyblackandwhitepicturesoftheconstructionprocess.Thisisreallyagreattreatiseonhowtobuildamodelusingthisformofconstructionandwouldbeagreatwaytobuildamodelforsomeonewhowantstotryanewmethodofhullconstructionbesidesplank-on-bulkhead or frame construction. A very good explanation of the usage of tools,templatesandclampsisprovidedtomakethejobofbuildingthehulleasieraswellastheplankingof thedeck andexact locationof thewaterline, etc. Thepaddlebox andpaddlewheel are also fully explained –Gibhas used aMicro-Markbrass etching kit to helphimmakepaddlewheel,whichagainisanewmodelerstoolthatyoureditorhasnotyethadany

    experiencewith – another good challenge. Surprisingly, the smokestacks are not easy tomake – fortunately, a full explanation of how these were made is supplied with photos.Other details are also supplied, along with vacuforming, which is another modelingtechnique that you editor has not tried. There are a number of challenges building thismodel that would be fun to take on. Many railing and gangway construction tips areprovidedandthemastingandriggingisnotverycomplicated,butfulldetailsareprovidedforthisalso. Thereareafewsmallboats,whichalsohavetobebuilt. Evenmountingthemodelonitsbase(andmakingthebase)isincluded.Gibmadetheflagusinghiscomputer,butGusAgustin’sflagmakingtechniquecouldalsobeemployed.ThefinalisMAKINGTHECASEforthemodel,whichisalsoshown. All in all, this book, the plans and disk, are highly recommended for any shipmodelerwhomaybeinterestedinarealchallengeaswellastheCivilWarperiod.Thecostis only $70.00 with a $9.00 charge for shipping within the US – money well spentconsideringthetimeandenjoymentamodelerwillobtainfromthisinvestment.
