Hjortspringboat–350BC This model of theHjortspring Boatisbasedondrawingsusedby“TheGuildofthe Hjortspring Boat” for their book (of2003)drawingsforfittingapageatscaleof1:10anddrawnbyNorwegianengineerFrJohannesenandpublishedbyG.Rosenberg– 1937. The Guild finished a full size-working replica about May 1999 andpaddledtheboatinthesea.TheremainsofthisearlyironageboatwasdiscoveredinapeatbogonHjortspringFarmontheDanish

IslandofALS in1921andto1937. Theyremovedtheboatremainsandpreserved itandput(theboat)ondisplayintheDanishNationalMuseum,Copenhagen.

ThisScandinavian’soldestpreservedplankfirstbuiltconstructionmethodboat,lapstrakeconstruction, is reallyawarcanoe. Itconsistsofabottomplankwithasideplankandgunwaleplankoneachsidestitchedtogether. Theendsarestitchedtogetherby twosternblocks.Theroundbottomvesseliskeel-lessandateachend,thebottomisextendedupwardbent, like a “horn” at the bowand at the stern; and there is another bent “horn”above extending from the top railing. The boat had 10 ribs or thwarts with supportingstruts,whichwereinstalledafterthehullplankingwasinstalled.Tenthwartsgaveroomfor20paddlersand the foundsomepaddles, twoofwhichwerebroader than theothers thatmight have been used steering. The boat’s weight has been calculated to about 500 kg(1,100lb)with24menandequipmentonboardforatotalweightofabout2,500kg(5,500lb).Thismodelused¼”thickalderwoodstripsgluedinthebreadandbuttermethod(onestrip inthemiddleaskeelandtwostripsperside)forthehull. CAD/CAMforShipModelers Clyde writes: use of CNC technology has been an important part of my shipmodeling, antique repair and household woodworking since I bought my first computercontrolledmillin2000.ItallowsmetodrawcomplexpartsintheCAD(computerassisteddesign) program complex that I would be unable to make myself, or at best would beextremelydifficulttomake.Icantheneithercutthemfromwood,brass,plasticorwax(forcasting) on one side or two sides, or send them to Shapeways for 3D printing in one ofseveralkindsofplasticsormetal,eitherplatedornot.CNCmillingisespeciallyusefulinmaking:

• Small parts, especially those too small to hold or construct by hand, even undermagnification,includingthecarvedlettersofashipname,scrolls,gunportwreaths,deadeyesandbelayingpins.

• Severalidenticalparts,includingdeckbeams,cleats,cannoncarriagesandbarrels.• Mirroredparts,includingscrollsandbadges.• Parts, in which great precision is needed, including those that must fit tightly

together,likecapstanpartsandships’wheels.• Objectsthatneedtobereproducedinseveralsizes,sinceobjectscanbescaledin1,

2 of 3 dimensions in CAD programs, including different sizes of fittings such asblocksoridenticalpartsonmodelsindifferentscales.

Therearemanypartsofamodelthatcanbemadeonamillor3Dprinted.Thepartsdo, however, require drawing in the computer and considerable assembly is required inbuilding a model, as you know. There is certainly a learning curve, but nothing aninterestedmodeler cannot learn. The hardware and software can be expensive, runningfromafewthousanddollarstotenortwentythousanddollars,butformethepleasureinexpandingmymodelingcapabilitiesanduseinmypart-timebusinesshasbeenwellworthit. Ienjoywatchingthemilcut inafewpartsthatwouldtakemedaysorweekstomake.Hereareafewexamplesofmodelingprojects:

TaketoshiTanaka

One of the finest shipmodelers in Tokyo, Japan is Mr.Taketoshi Tanaka, past presidentof the ROPE and an honorarymemberof theSMA. Youreditorhas been fortunate enough toenjoy a few glasses of SAKEwithTaketoshi (I use his first namehere, as we are good friends)while having the privilege of

attending several ROPE Exhibitions inJapan. One of his earlier models, theCog, is shownaboveasa first exampleof the kind of work he does. AnotherexampleofhisworkisthephotooftheHMS Fly. There are other models of“western” ships that he has built, theWhalingBarkCharlesW.Morganbeingone, but unfortunately I do not have aphoto of the latter. His primaryinterestinthelastnumberofyearshasbeen early Japanese ship models, allscratchbuilt. TheprimaryfocusofthisarticleisonhisJapaneseshipmodelsthathehasscratchbuiltofanearlyperiod in Japanesehistory. HigakiKaisenwasa typical Japanesewoodensailing vessel playing an active role in cargo transportation from the 17th century to theearlypartofthe19thcentury.ShesailedthePacificOceanbetweenOsakaandEdo(whichisTokyotoday).Theshiptransportedmanygoodsandfoods.Higakimeansdiamond-shapedpattern,Kaisenmeansatradeship.Thespecialsinglesailisasymbolicpartoftheship. Themodel Taketoshimade is scratch built in 1:100 scale, circa 1760 andmade agreatefforttoconstructHigakiKaisenasaccuratelyaspossiblewith informationsuppliedby the book Higakikaisen/Tarukaisen from theMuseumofMaritimeScience inTokyo. Theplanswere drawn by H. Corporation, an engineeringcompany, based on the book from above. Thesinglesailisasymbolicpartoftheshipmadefromcotton material. Woods used are traditionalJapanese woods. The hull planking and deck isfromcherrywithmastsandyardsfrompearwood.The hull decoration “HIGAKI” is boxwood, thediamond shape is inlaid, and the stand rotates.Figures were carefully done by Taketoshi to theexactscaleoftheshipandreflecttheappearanceoftheoriginalJapanesesailors.Thefiguresgarmentsand the flag are made from Japanese paper. Seephoto. Thismodelwasused,alongwithadviceandsuggestionsfromTaketoshi,bytheWoodyJoeshipmodel kit company toput together a kitmodel oftheHigaki Kaisen, which is currently available onthe Internet. Your editor built this kit model,whichwasalotoffunandincludedthepleasureofworkingwiththeJapanesewoodsthatsmelledverygood!Mr.TanakaistheonlymodelerIknowwhoscratchbuiltashipmodelandthenhadakitmodelingcompanyusehisexpertisetomakeakitmodelforsaletoothermodelers.

The next very early Japanese model the Taketoshi scratch built I believe is theGosabuneTaiho-MaruofHigoClan.MuchoftheinformationonthismodelistakenfromtheROPENews#102,thatstates:“TheoriginofGozabunecanbetracedbacktofightingboats

at the beginning of the 16thcentury, the Muromachiperiod. At that time, theboats were categorized inthree types. Large one iscall ‘Atake’,middle sizewascalled ‘Sekibune’ and smallsizewas called ‘Kobaya’. Inthe early period of the 17thcentury, the Tokugawaregimebanned constructionof building fighting boatswith capacity of over 500Koku (note: Koku is aJapanese unit of volume. 1Koku equals to 278.3 litersor 73.5 US gal) to weakenmilitary strength of feudal

clans.SuchmeasuresforcedfeudalclansofthewesternpartofJapantoconvertsekibunetotransportationboat forthefeudal lordswhoservetheobligatorysystemofalternate-yearresidenceinEdo”. Aftera lotof research inmuseumsand library’s in Japan,Taketoshibeganscratchbuilding his model of the Gozabune Taiho-Maru of Hugo clan in 1:62 scale. Many moredetailsareavailableintheROPENews#102withmoreinformationinROPENews#108,where Taketoshi describes the error hemade in the construction of themodelwhich hecorrectedbybuildinganewtwo-storiedstructureontheboat. SinceTaketoshibuilttheUmi-Gozabune(seaship)above,healsoisnowbuildingtheKawa-Gozabune (river ship) of the sameperiod (The route takenby the feudal lordswasboth by sea and river to Edo). DonDressel

As of last month, Don had not yetcompeted his upper deck beams at thestern. Thathasnowbeencompletedalongwith all the necessary sanding andsmoothing on the carlings and ledges tomake sureeverything is smoothand readyforplanking.Adecisionalsohastobemadeas to just what planking is going to beinstalled so that it will still be possible toseesomeofthedetailofthelowergundeck,such as the captains, barrels, people andcannon installations (see photo attached).Thelowerdeckareahasalsobeenpartiallyplanked on the deck midsection and both

sides–portandstarboard, leavinganopenarea tobetween themidshipdeckingand thedeckingrequired for the lowercannon. Also, thebulkheadson the lowerdeckhavebeenplanked,althoughitishardtoseeandwillprobablynotbevisibleexceptthroughthelowergunportsoncetheupperdeckisplanked.Ithinkthesameprocedurewillbedoneontheupperdeck–amidshipsplankingandportandstarboardonthebulkheadsforthecannonas required. All cannonwill be fully rigged, as has already been done for the lower gundeck. Oneitemthatsomemodelers ignore is thatthecannonareof thecorrectsize,withthelargercannononthelowerdeck,smallercannonontheupperdeckandtwocannonon

Eachcannonrequirednineringboltsforthecannon and the bulkhead, totaling 396, all made from annealed wire, each wire twistedaroundametaltoolthediameteroftheringandmadelongenoughtoinsertintoadrilledholeonthecarriage/bulkhead.ThesecannonandcarriageswerenotmadebyDon,whichhedidforhisSovereignoftheSeas,butpurchasedfromwww.syrenshipmodelcompany.com,thathasavarietyof sizes forboth cannonandcarriages (checkout thereweb site). Thecarriagesdocomeina“kit”,soeachcarriagehastobeassembled,butnoringboltsorringsaresuppliedwiththecannoncarriagekit.Theinstructionsonhowtoassemblethekitsarealso provided over the Internet (same email address), not supplied with the individualcarriagekits.Thecannonarealsoseparateandavailableinbrass,alreadyturned. Thenextstepwastostartmakingtheupperdeckbeams(forecastleandpoop),butalsothestovehastobeconstructed(itislocatedontheupperdeckjustabafttheforemast)and the planking (with dowels) completed, once again planking being done as the lowerdeckwas, since all the cannon on the upper deck also have to be installed. Twenty-twocannon on the upper deck have to be made, installed and rigged once the decking iscomplete, as well as the upper deckbulwarkplankedandlodgingbeamsfortheupperdecksinstalled,solotsofthingstodowhile the CODIV-19 pandemic continues.Observe the start of some of this work inthe photo to the right, with the lowerlemon spars made and inserted on themodel to make sure they are alignedcorrectly. Please pardon my clutteredwork area. Doweling of the deck withbamboo dowels is in process. The twoupper capstans are also temporarilyinstalled and “holes” have been cut in theplankingwhere thehatchesandgratingswillbe installed. Thesparsandcaptainscanberemovedforsandingpurposesoncethedowelingiscompleted. OnecommentIwouldliketomakeatthispoint–ifyou“drop”somethingbetweenthe deck beams at this point and the object goes “into the bilge”, it can become a realproblem to “retrieve” the object that has fallen into the bottom of the model. LONGtweezers,probesandother tools (witha lotof colorful language)will be expendedwhiletrying to remove the object that has fallen into the “hold”. I think I have removed everyobjectthathas“invaded”theinteriorofthemodel,butIamnot100%sure! Theobjectisinevitablyjustalittletoobigtofallbetweentheframes–sobeware.

First, real silver solder is not usually required for shipmodelers unless youwantsomething very strong. There is a product called “Tix Solder”, available formost hobbyshops,whichclaimsitisthe“hardestsoftsolderonearth”.Theyalsohave“TixFlux”thatisalsorequired.Putalittle“flux”ontheobjecttobesoldered(seephoto),asmallslice(piece)ofthesolderontopandapplyalittleheatviaatorchtomeltthesolder.Iuseapairofclipson a heating pad to hold the

twoobjectstogetherwherethesolderingtakesplace(seephoto).Ifyouwantastrongjointwith real silver solder, obtain the real stuff and perform the same operationwith a littletorch. Thephotoaboveshowsthe“hands”,solderingbench,silversolder,“Tixsolderandflux”andasmalltorch.Again,allcanbepurchasedfromahobbyshoporJewelersstorelikeOtto Frei (they latter is on the Internet). Another great product is Silver paste solders –extraeasy,Easy,Medium&Hardthatcomesinasyringethatincludestheflux.Ihavefoundthat this silver solderpasteworkswonderfully, but it doeshave a shelf life onceopened.Regularsilversolderandagainbutcutintosmallpieces,alittlefluxapplied,andthepartssolderedtogetherwithasmalltorch. Whenmaking pintails and gudgeons for your rudder, particularly if youwant therudder towork,hardsilver solder is theway togo. If youdon’twant the rudder to turn(anditusuallycan’tbeturnedwhenthemodelisinstalledinacase),thenTixsolderworksfine. IalsodiscoveredthatyoucannotordersilverpastesoldersovertheInternetfromOtto Frei, they cannot ship that product in California! I cannot locate any localOtto Freistore in theL.A. area. If anyoneknowsof another location toobtain silverpaste solders,pleaseletyoueditorknow!

Richard Keyes is anhonorary member of theSMAwho resides in Sidney,Australia,sohiscommutetoan SMA meeting would berather long to say the least.However, he does do somefine ship modeling work,many scratch. According toRichard: “my latest projectis the Dumas kit of theMorantugboatCarolMoran.This kit has a vacuumformedstyrenehullwhichisnot my favorite medium toworkwithandmanypre-cutparts made of some sort ofexpanded plastic/foam

materialIamnotfamiliarwith.Supergluewasusedextensively.Thewheelhouseroofandship’sboatwerealsovacuumformed.DuetothelackofshelfspaceIdecidedtomakeitahalfmodelsoitcouldbehungonthewall. As a half model made from a kit, a few compromises had to be made to thearrangementoftheaftendofthetopdeckbutIstayedtruetothebasicship.Everythingonthemodelisoutoftheboxexceptforthebowfender(seenontheshelflowerright),whichstillhas tobemodifiedandattached. Imadea loom/jigandwove it tosizeafterwhich Iwrapped it around a flexible roll of cotton kindly provided bymy dentist. I still have todecidewhethertoaddtiresassidebuffers.ThisDumasmodelisbasicallydesignedforRCof which I have no interest.The connecting bits areprovided but no drive orradiocontrolcomponents. This is my secondMorantugboatmodel.ImadtheAliceLMoranfortyyearsago and plan to make ascratchbuiltHeideMoran asmy next project usinginternetphotosandplansbyJamesPottinger. Randy sent me the following information and photos on the Zahma, designed byCrowninshieldandBurbankandbuiltintheLawleyyardin1915. Randywrites:“shewasonthecoastofCaliforniabeginningintheearly1920’s. The85year-old1:48scalemodel(of the ship)wasownedby thegrandsonofoneof theownersof theoriginalyacht. Theauxiliarycenterboardketchwasrunagroundandburned.” Themodeltooknearly1yearforreconditioningfromthepointthatRandyreceiveditforrepair.RandydidapresentationonthismodelatanSMAmeetingsixorsevenyearsagowhenhestilllivedinCalifornia.ThefirstsetofphotosshowtheconditionofthemodelwhenRandyfirstreceiveditasshownbelow.

ThesecondsetofphotosshowthemodelafterRandyhadrestoredit,startingatthebowandworkingtowardthesternwithafinalphotoofthecompletedmodel.

Donsentmesomemoreinformationandphotosofhislatestshipmodeleffort,theModelShipwaysBluenosemodel,whichisaplank-in-bulkheadkitthatheusedeverythinginthekitexceptblocksandline,whichheobtainedfromhis“stash”. Donindicateditisonlythesecondtimehehasmadesails,withtheseamlinesbeingdrawnontheclothwithasoftpencilandthetablet(doubleseems)gluedtogetherwithwhiteglue.Donindicatedthatthesailclothprovidedinthekitwasa littletoheavyforthescaleof themodel. Theonlyrealproblem Don had was in bending the sides of the whaleboats to shape. He thinks theyendeduplookingmorelikebigcanoes.
