about learning greek! greek is a language. it was spoken not only by brilliant philosophers and poets, but also by illiterate shepherds and fishermen: anyone can understand greek with practice. it is not a puzzle or code or mystery, but a language. if you treat greek as a language, like you would french or spanish, you will find it easier to read, write, and even speak than if you pretend that it is something else.

your participation! learning a language requires active effort. if you are prepared for class and have any homework or reading completed and ready to review, and if you participate in class discussion and activities, your participation grade will be good. if you are not prepared or do not participate, you will lose points.

SUBJECT: Fall 2011 Classroom Visit

INTRODUCTION

Part of the joy of being TA Coordinator is having the opportunity to sit in on and evaluate each TA's class and to review the experience with each TA. With the help of Dr. Pagan, who visited the classes of the TAs whose classes conflicted with my own teaching, I have completed this round of classroom visits. We saw much good teaching, a few weaknesses, and all of us, I'm sure, appreciate the contribution of our excellent TAs to the Department's teaching mission. My evaluation of your teaching follows.

T ese are m notes* from my visit to your class on 9/13, Period 4, in FLG 265. You were teaching LAT l · "' 1cally a quiz, ·mRg-, and the Myrmidon stoPy-:- There were 1: present and I visited for the full period. ,, v' (., ' ll'V

*These are informal notes for informational purposes. They will not be included in your permanent file .

GOOD POINTS (strengths)

• Excellent use of class t ime-a variety of activities-quiz, translation, review, drill.

• Creation of excellent classroom atmosphere-students are not intimidated and feel free to ask and answer questions. Instructor is very approachable.

• Use of "Socratic method" for involving students in understanding the way the language works. Also provides follow-through to make sure they truly understand the concepts.

• Accent drill.

Using the version of the text keeps everyone focused.

Not letting students off the hook if they can't translate a sentence-working with them to do as much as they can.

AREAS EEDING IMPROVEMENT

..

• This was a well-done class. Continue what you are doing .

OVERALL

An excellent class nicely paced, with a variety of activities and material covered clearly and accurately. You have a very low-key and effective style. The students were clearly working hard and enjoying doing so.

I would rate this particular visit perhaps an A.

A few suggestions ...

• Keep up the good work. You are very professional but also very much at ease in the classroom. You made a difficult subject very palatable and accessible to your class. A wonderful start to your teaching career at UF.

I wish you happy teaching and success in your own studies.

I have received a copy of these notes: ___________ date

Course Overview This course will move you through the second half of basic Greek grammar and syntax, finishing what you began in GRE 1120 by the end of March. During April, you will read from Plato’s Apology and other Greek texts to be selected based on student interest.

Class Meetings We shall meet during period 3, from 9:35 AM until 10:25 AM, every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, in room 184 of Norman Hall. We do not meet on Wednesdays.

Textbooks • Hansen and Quinn, Greek: An Intensive Course. • Plato, Apology, preferably Helm’s text with commentary. Any other texts for reading in April will be provided.

Instructor Miller Krause ([email protected]) Office Hours: Tuesday and Friday, 11–12, in Dauer 134

Attendance This course moves more quickly than GRE 1120, so your diligent attendance is essential. For every absence over two, for any reason, you will lose a point from the final course grade. Make-up tests, quizzes, and assignments will not be granted except in ex-traordinary cases and at the instructor’s discretion.

Study Daily review and preparation are keys to building Greek grammar, vocabulary, and reading skills. University students should generally expect to spend two hours studying for every hour of class. Since GRE 1121 meets for four hours a week, you should expect to study about eight hours every week for this course. Allow yourself enough time both to read new lessons and to review past material. You may find it helpful to study with friends from class.

Course Website All class information will be posted online and updated regularly. Check often the course website at:

SUBJECT: FaU 2012 Classroom Visit

INTRODUCTION

These are my notes* from my visit to your class on 9/14, Period 7, in Turlington 2318. You were teaching LAT 1121, specifically the future and imperfect tenses and the passive voice. There were 17 students present and I visited for the full period.

*These are informal notes for informational purposes and to help you grow in the eyes of gods and humankind. They will not be included in your permanent file.

GOOD POINTS (strengths)

Mastery of subject matter. Very clear powerpoints and explanations. ( Helpful added labels on powerpoints -"new and improved". Using a variety of English translations to show them all the possible permutations of a verb. ( ie. The boy gets slapped) . Good reinforcement of newly presented concepts, by drilling with and without visuals and at random points during the class. Relentless drilling in a variety of formats( single, group, etc.) Clear reading of students to see who understands and who doesn't and returning to students who don't understand. Emphasis on longmarks. Good classroom energy level. Keeping everyone involved.

AREAS NEEDING IMPROVEMENT

Keep up the good work.

OVERALL

I would rate this particular visit perhaps an A.

Hac in re haud dissimilis erit schola nostra a solitis illis in quibus alii sermones, ut Theodiscus, Gallicus, Italicus hodiernus, tractantur. Spera-mus igitur fore ut omnes discipuli conentur inter scholas Latine potius quam Anglice loqui.

Course ObjectivesSince we’ve learned the basics of Latin, now it’s time to improve our skills by speaking, reading, and writing. Like all languages, Latin is only learned by use and experience: without these, we can, perhaps, learn a few words and recite rules, but true learning takes practice. So, we’ll read histories written in Latin, which we’ll discuss and explain in Latin, and we’ll practice writing in Latin ourselves as well. Moreover, since the heritage of Latin literature doesn’t belong to one author but many, nor to one century but to all human memory, nor to one city but to both the Old and New World, we’ll read both ancient passages taken from the historian Sallust and a more recent history of Florida, composed with elegance in the sixteenth century by Ur-bain Chauveton.

Course LanguageAfter the preliminaries of the first day, we’ll speak only Latin in class. In this, our class will be like those in which other languages, like German, French, or Italian, are taught. We hope, therefore, that all students will try to speak Latin instead of English in class.
