Christianity is a religion of love. Praying for the dead is an expression of love. We ask God to remember our departed loved ones because we love them. Love rela- tionships survive death and even transcend it. There is an inner need for a relationship with a loved one to continue to be expressed even af- ter a love one has died. Often even more so after a loved one has died since physical communication is no longer possible. The Church encourages us to express our love for our departed brethren through the memorial services and prayers. The anniversary of the death of a loved one is very painful. The Church helps us cope with this pain by encouraging us to have memorial prayers offered in church for our departed loved ones on the anniversaries of their deaths. On the 40th day of ones death, the church again gives us the opportunity to do something for our loved on. It helps express and resolve our grief. Death may take our loved ones out of sight but it certainly does not take them out of mind, or out of heart. We continue to love them and think of them as we believe they continue to love and think of us. How can a mother forget a child who has passed over to the life beyond? The same Christian love which led her to pray for that child when he/she lived will guide her to pray for them now. For in Christ all are alive. It is also customary among Orthodox Chris- tians to bring a tray of boiled wheat kernels to church for the memorial service. The wheat kernels express belief in everlasting life. Jesus said; “Unless a grain of wheat falls in the earth and dies, it remains alone, but if it dies it bears much fruit.” John 12:24. Just as new life rises from the buried kernel of wheat, so we believe that the one buried will rise one day to a new life with God. The wheat kernels are covered with sugar, and raisins to express the bliss of eternal life with God in heaven. COUNTDOWN . . . TO THE ST. NICHOLAS GREEK FOLK FESTIVAL JUNE 7 - 10, 2012

TEACHING OUR CHILDREN ABOUTMEMORIAL PRAYERS FOR THE DECEASED

Our Orthodox Christian faith takes deathfrankly and openly into account. Our Churchcalendar provides many occasions when weare asked to face up to the fact of death. Paschais one occasion. Sunday is another.

Every Sunday is a “little Pascha” on ourChurch calendar celebrating Christ’s victoryover death. On our Church calendar everyyear there are special Memorial Saturdays or“Saturday of the Souls” which provide anotheropportunity for us to face up to death. Onthese Saturday’s the Divine Liturgy is cel-ebrated and special prayers are offered for thedeceased loved ones.

We pray for the dead especially on Satur-days since it was on the Sabbath day that Christlay dead in the tomb “resting from all Hisworks” and “trampling down death by death”.Thus in the New Testament, Saturday becamethe proper day for remembering the dead andoffering prayers for them.

From reading the above, one might ask thisquestion: WHY DO WE PRAY FOR THEDEPARTED? Christianity is a religion oflove. Praying for the dead is an expression oflove. We ask God to remember our departedloved ones because we love them. Love rela-tionships survive death and even transcend it.There is an inner need for a relationship with aloved one to continue to be expressed even af-ter a love one has died.

Often even more so after a loved one hasdied since physical communication is nolonger possible. The Church encourages us toexpress our love for our departed brethrenthrough the memorial services and prayers.

The anniversary of the death of a loved oneis very painful. The Church helps us cope with

this pain by encouraging us to have memorialprayers offered in church for our departedloved ones on the anniversaries of theirdeaths. On the 40th day of ones death, thechurch again gives us the opportunity to dosomething for our loved on. It helps expressand resolve our grief.

Death may take our loved ones out of sightbut it certainly does not take them out of mind,or out of heart. We continue to love them andthink of them as we believe they continue tolove and think of us. How can amother forget a child who has passed over tothe life beyond? The same Christian lovewhich led her to pray for that child when he/shelived will guide her to pray for them now. Forin Christ all are alive.

It is also customary among Orthodox Chris-tians to bring a tray of boiled wheat kernels tochurch for the memorial service. The wheatkernels express belief in everlasting life. Jesussaid; “Unless a grain of wheat falls in the earthand dies, it remains alone, but if it dies it bearsmuch fruit.” John 12:24.

Just as new life rises from the buried kernelof wheat, so we believe that the one buried willrise one day to a new life with God. The wheatkernels are covered with sugar, and raisins toexpress the bliss of eternal life with God inheaven.

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we begin this season of Holy and Great Lent, we do so inanticipation of the blessings we will receive as we commune withChrist through the special services, observances, and disciplinesof our Orthodox Christian faith. We embark on a journey offaith, with the destination of the joy of Pascha before us, know-ing that abundant spiritual treasure awaits if we are committedto intensifying prayer and fasting and service to others in char-ity.

We have begun to prepare our hearts for the impact of GreatLent during the Triodion period and our reflection on repen-tance and forgiveness. Our resolve to follow the services anddisciplines is strong, but we also realize that we face many chal-lenges in navigating the course of the season and realizing thegreat potential that it has to offer in our relationship with God.In the days ahead, we will have responsibilities and commitmentsto fulfill. We may have a family that will need our care and pro-vision. Each day we will have tasks to accomplish, work to do,and obligations to meet. In addition, we know that new chal-lenges will arise and pressures will appear that will make thejourney difficult. Our resolve to strengthen our faith throughGreat Lent will be tested. Many things will compete for the at-tention of our hearts and minds, challenging us to be faithful toour commitment to deeper communion with God.

In the midst of daily life and during this sacred and solemnseason, we must remind ourselves through prayer and reflectionthat we do not make this journey alone. The services we attendare beautiful and holy times of worship in the presence of Christand in the company of our brothers and sisters. The disciplinesof fasting and giving are disciplines of grace that connect us tothe love of God and allow that love to transform us and be of-fered through us to others. Thus, our resolve and commitmentin Great Lent should be strengthened by knowing that His pres-ence and His grace are always with us. We make this journey inChrist. He is the source of the spiritual power we need to re-main focused on the meaning of this season. He is also our des-tination.

As we begin this journey together, I encourage you to keepyour eyes looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith(Hebrews 12:2). Each new day reaffirm your resolve to partici-pate in the services and disciplines of Great Lent as you live inthe presence of Christ and experience His love for you. May wealso remember that making this journey with Him, through theexamination of the soul, through self-denial and obedience to thewill of God, and through the suffering and pain of His Crucifix-ion, we will be with our Lord in the glorious light and life of HisResurrection.

With paternal love in Christ,

+Archbishop Demetrios

The St. Nicholas Greek School students spent two separate evenings, making “ welcome blankets” forthe Ronald McDonald House. The goal of the “The Welcome Project” is to provide a blanket for eachchild that stays at the Ronald McDonald House, hoping it will make him/her feel a little bit more at home.

When a patient checks into the Ronald McDonald House, he or she will be welcomed by a handmadeblanket at the foot of the bed. These are no-sew blankets. PTA Secretary, Maria Mimaros, donated all thematerial for the blankets. Children across Baltimore are working in clubs and at school to help out withthis effort. The Greek School felt the project was worthwhile and were happy to help others in need. Tolearn more about the project, you may visit www.rmhcbaltimore.org and look for “Make Blankets for ourChildren through The Welcome Project.”

GREEKTOWN CDCA message from Col. John E. Gavrilis, CEO

During tax season, the CDC offers assistance to propertyowners on fixed incomes or who have fallen on hard times byconnecting them with the State of Maryland who provides taxbreaks for such individuals. If you or someone you know has hada tough time paying their property tax, there is a HomeownersTax Credit that bases your property tax assessment on income, not property values. You can find more information on this pro-gram by visiting the State Department of Assessments andTaxation’s website http://www.dat.state.md.us/sdatweb/htc.htmlor by calling our office for an application.

We would like to commend the efforts of the Parade com-mittee and committee chairmen, George Stakias and DinoFrangos, on their outstanding efforts in preparing for the 2012Greek Independence Day Parade. We are excited to see a largegroup of dedicated volunteers commemorating our Greek Inde-pendence with displays of our Greek community. This is a truehighlight for Greektown and helps us preserve and promote ourneighborhood, one of the few remaining Greektowns in theUnited States. We look forward to seeing you on March 25th, this

year’s parade!Check out our web site www.greektowncdc.org or call the

office 410-327-3306 for upcoming events such as Citizen on Pa-trol walks and community clean ups. We continue to work withthe City on crime and grime issues and have a strong partner-ship with the Southeastern Police Department. But we needyour help to ensure all crimes are reported as soon as they hap-pen. Call 911 immediately when witnessing any illegal activityand 311 for non-police related city issues.
