Pedestrians and cyclists are the vulnerable group who face greater risk of accidents. 20% of people who die in road accidents worldwide are pedestrians. Among vulnerable road users, children are exposed to higher risk than others. In Kerala, the fatality occurs mostly while crossing the road, especially to school children. In order to promote road safety, various governments has initiated several innovative steps. The vulnerability of the children on our roads has been widely accepted by experts all over the state. There is a feeling that the present academic teaching schedule is always under pressure for students and the atmosphere to make them conscious of the safe usage of roads in different capacities is very challenging. To solve this problem and to teach road safety in schools without further burdening the students, a new project named “Road Safety Education Through Schools in the State” was conceptualized by NATPAC. The programme can be effectively utilized in reducing the accident rate of children and also in saving the life of the other road users by introducing various road safety activities through school children for which school teachers in the state are to be trained on the different facets of road safety modules. This ensures the children to become responsible road user and also to recognise and act on safe environment and in turn to safe public health for all.
