Present ; BASF : . Commissioner J, Daili, H. Kandolf, D. André (E1), M. Flueh(E3), (E6)

Aim : Mr wanted to introduce his successor and discuss GMO aspects + other new technologies (risk/hazard,PPP, nano)

GMO part ; • BASF : not same ideas but same agenda ; competitiveness, safety, reliability. Was close to decision of

abandoning developement of GM crops specifically for EU market 2 years ago but was encouraged by Amflora authorisation. However, situation is getting worse : D Court qualifies GM technology as a high risk technology, ECJ judgement on honey making field trials difficult, physical attacks in trials in D, several Lander don't want GM, potato growers have to sign not growing GM potatoes (food chain ask this) => no perspective for GM cultivation in medium term. Will nevertheless continue the authorisation procedure for their 3 files : Amadea and Modena for starch. Fortuna (late blight R). Trials in Germany

ongoing for data generation. Will work on commercialisation plans once products are authorised. Have been open and did a lot of communication ; not succesfull.

• Commissioner took note of corporate decision which took account of landscape in EU. Commissioner has defrozen Amflora file, believes in Innovation, authorisations are working, Forcing through will not create positive effects, works on creation of understanding; authorisation procedure, EFSA indépendance, discussing, putting people together, creating comfort in process but decisions need to be taken at the end. Illegal bans are not good. :

Aim ; acceleration tor more science based uecisions in future. Companies snoua right for support of consumers, not only farmers and take the room of NGOs,

• BASF : smoother process, EFSA credibility key, in favour of sustainable agriculture and GM is one option for sustainability, food security. Ready to give socio-economic data, in addition to safety data.
