LIBERATION PSYCHOLOGY IN BRAZILEdited by Silvana Tuleski

This book unites studies of Brazilian researchers who are focused on education and psychology. The main objective is to construct a new psychological ideology that is capable of criticizing andconfronting the current capitalist society. The chapters are organized into two major sections:(1) The theoretical and methodological path towards a more critical Psychology, and (2) the socialimplications of the investigation into psychology and education. Section One is composed of sixchapters that propose the following themes: criticism of possible contributions to Marxismleading to revolutionary education; discussion and analysis of public politics effects on Brazilianeducation, and its limits in the capitalist society; the basic conditions for development of a criticalpsychology that is effectively radical; the limits and possibilities for a critical EducationalPsychology in Brazil; the historical critical pedagogy and the emancipatory education; and finally, the systematization of activity category in Alexis Leontiev’s work. Section Two is composed ofseven chapters that present the results of many group research studies and study groupsconducted at upper level institutions. It seeks to add related works on historical culturalpsychology’s contribution to a child’s education up until under graduate and graduate studies. Itcontains four studies focused on critical education of young children which use children'sliterature and various art forms.

VYGOTSKY & LEONTIEVThe Construction of a Marxist PsychologyEdited by Silvana Calvo Tuleski

This book unites theoretical research which focuses on the studies of the two Soviet authors thatcreated Historical-Cultural Psychology: L. S. Vygotsky and A. N. Leontiev. Currently, severalpublications appear to distort facts and concepts of the authors and make statements thattarnish the works of Vygotsky and Leontiev.

The book is organized into two sections. Section one begins with an analysis of contemporarystudies that claim they are based on Vygotsky, seeking to prove that many studies end updistorting the author's ideas. The following two chapters conduct a historical study of the author(his work and its context) and seek to introduce the reader to concepts of materiality andundeniable affiliation to Communism as well as historical dialectical materialism. Section twoconsists of two chapters that propose problems in the alleged rift between Vygotsky and Leontievbased on history and documented sources. Lastly, this book seeks to demonstrate through theuse of an in-depth study of Leontiev's work that he did not become mechanistic, but continuedto elaborate on a theory of Vygotsky's which depicts the social formation of psyche throughactivity.

RELIGION & HEALTHThe Perspective of Happy Science MedicineYoichi Chida

Historically, religion and medicine have been strongly connected. In more recent decades, various academics can be viewed as part of a larger movement to investigate the effects ofreligion on health in the field of complementary and alternative medicine. Such research isongoing, but to date, the mechanisms underlying the association between religion and healthremain unclear. A major reason for the lack of finding any mechanisms may be that religion andhealth literature provides no unified theoretical or theological basis from which to identify.

Thus, to address this gap, Chapter 1 of this book briefly introduces the doctrine of “HappyScience”, a religious movement founded by Master Ryuho Okawa in 1986 that has since growninto one of the most influential religious organisations in Japan, with a member base from morethan 100 countries worldwide. As you will see in Chapter 1, Happy Science theory has embracedthe basic teachings of the major religions (e.g., Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, and Judaism). Moreover, this theory provides concrete tenets on the spiritual views of life, the purpose of livingin this world, the structure of our mind and soul, and the relationships between mind and body.

In Chapter 2, the Happy Science theory on diseases suggests that 70% or 80% of diseases arecaused almost exclusively by an individual’s state of mind. Master Okawa has detailed howalmost all modern diseases are caused by three factors - what we eat, lack of exercise, and stress- which indicates that psychological factors have a much stronger impact on the etiology andprognosis of illnesses than any physical, environmental or genetic factors per se.

Chapter 3 explains the treatment theories and methods based on the basic tenets of HappyScience. In particular, since the Happy Science doctrine regards medical care as love, thesetreatment theories and methods are systematically introduced according to the stages of love:fundamental love (having spiritual views on life, smiling, and showing gratitude), spirituallynurturing love (having a healthy lifestyle, developing problem-solving skills, and making strategicwithdrawals or adhering to Optimalism), forgiving love (detaching from greed, forgiving, anddeveloping altruism), and love incarnate (using positive willpower, faith and prayer, meditation, and collapse of karma). In addition, throughout this book, the author has provided case reportsthat make it easier to imagine how those with severe disorders can be miraculously curedthrough Happy Science Medicine.

SYSTEMATIC APPROACH ELUCIDATING EFFECTS OF MUSIC ONTO HUMANHEALTHTrinity of Medicine, Musicology, & EngineeringYuki Tanaka, Hiroki Nogawa

Many people feel music affects human, which means we feel activated or inspired when we hearmusic tailored to our feelings. This effect has been the basis of music therapy. However, noscientifically systematic approach for investigating the effects of music on human health hasbeen proposed, although a set of analytic methods or apparatuses for evaluating humanresponses to music has been described.

Herein is a new book entitled Systematic Approach Elucidating Effects of Music on Human Health:Trinity of Medicine, Musicology, and Engineering, which states and proposes a new systemicapproach to elucidate effects of music on human health.

This book proposes a concept that supposes humans as a black box and tries to elucidate itsbehaviors by analyzing the input and output from the black box: the input is music, while outputis human reactions. This book then describes two aspects of input analysis that are musicologyand engineering, and two aspects of output analysis that are medicine and engineering.

After stating the analysis method in detail, this book shows integration processes of theseanalysis aspects, presenting three research examples. These research examples are Effects ofEthnic Music on Elderly Dementia Patients, the Effect of Music upon Awakening from a Nap, andthe Effect of Music on Biological Responses during Sports Activities. Though these researchexamples may look to focus on different research subjects, a single and robust systemic approachunderlies the research.

This book is useful for researchers who have interests in studying the effect of music on humanhealth with some knowledge of musicology, engineering, psychology, and neuroscience. Thisbook proposes a firm systemic methodology for them and helps them to perform further studiesof their own. Music therapists, music composers, and music artists also may feel interested inthis book.

AUTHOR INFORMATION: Dr. Yuki Tanaka received the Bachelor of Engineering from Tokai

University, Japan in 2005, and the Master of Engineering from Tokai University, Japan, in 2007.She acquired Ph.D. in 2011 at Tokyo Medical and Dental University Graduate School. She hasstudied piano under Toshie NAKASHIMA (Pianist) since the age of 4 years old since 1985. She has been a part-timelecturer at College of Bioresource Sciences, Nihon University from 2011, and at School ofMedicine, Nihon University from 2013. Her current research interest is a systematic view givinga scientific knowledge of human reaction to music, which enables a concrete guide for composingbetter music to dementia patients. For her excellent study and research performance, shereceived the Nobuko Matsumae prize for the encouragement of the Shigeyoshi Matsumaememorial fund from educational foundation Tokai University in 2005.

YOUTH SUICIDE PREVENTIONEverybody’s BusinessEdited by Hatim A. Omar

This book is based upon experiences from the "Stop Youth Suicide Campaign" (SYS), acommunity-based youth suicide prevention program, led by the Division of Adolescent Medicineat the University of Kentucky Children's Hospital, Lexington. This program raises awareness andeducates government agencies, teachers, parents, and students about the high risk behaviorsthat can lead to youth suicide. It provides education for medical care agencies to recognize andscreen for adolescent depression and suicide, connects youth, parents, citizens, caregivers, andprofessionals with appropriate support services.

The "Stop Youth Suicide Campaign" is a holistic suicide awareness campaign. In other words, theprogram seeks to provide appropriate information and assist all stakeholders, e.g. individuals, communities and governments/policy makers to make informed decisions. In Kentucky, thecampaign has been successful in changing some laws, introducing suicide education and trainingat schools, and provides interventional services as well as prevention strategies throughoutKentucky. A measure of success is a sustained drop in suicide rates over time, correlated to whenthe "Stop Youth Suicide Campaign" started.

In this book, you will find an overview of youth suicide, and several chapters looking at suicidefrom different points of view to create a holistic approach to this public health issue.

HANDBOOK ON EMOTION REGULATIONProcesses, Cognitive Effects & Social ConsequencesEdited by Madeline L. Bryant

Emotion regulation (ER), which refers to the ability to identify, experience, modulate, and expressemotions, is critical to adaptive functioning. Although the term ER has been used synonymouslywith coping strategies, affect regulation, and self-regulation, it is important to differentiate ERfrom these other constructs to ensure optimal construct validity and accurate measurement. Tothis end, ER has been defined as "the process by which individuals influence which emotions theyhave, when they have them, and how they experience and express these emotions" (Gross, 1998p. 275). Emotion is experienced in three primary ways: behaviourally, physiologically, andexperientially (Gross, 1998); therefore, ER refers to strategies that alter these threeaforementioned emotional processes. This book discusses the processes, cognitive effects, andsocial consequences of emotion regulation.

PLACEBO EFFECTSClinical Aspects, Methodological Approaches & Ethical ImplicationsEdited by Kendra Vaughn

Placebo effect is a medical term indicating an effect attributed to sham pharmaceuticalpreparations, which are able to induce a positive or a recovery response in an individualinteracting both with placebo and the general practitioner, physician or caregiver. The placeboresponse is a well-recognized phenomenon, particularly in the context of clinical trials. Thechapters in this book examine the recent debate about the role of placebo in pharmacology, particularly in neuro-pharmacology, psychology and palliative care in cancer and has shed a lighton the placebo component of CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) and the use ofplacebo in evidence based medicine (EBM). The authors’ of the second chapter look at theputative mechanisms of placebo and nocebo responses in epilepsy, which are hypothesised anddiscussed along with possible consequences in clinical practice. VICTIM VICTORIOUSFrom Fire to PhoenixEdited by Marie-Claire Patron, Stephen S Holden

The world is peopled by victims; everyone has a story. However, victimhood is just the beginningof the story. This book is about the endings of at least some of those stories, the stories of victimswho strive to overcome and even triumph in the end.

This book is a collection of research perspectives and personal stories exploring the variouspathways for overcoming victimhood. It is hoped that they might offer an inspiration for othersand encourage others to stay on the path to find a positive ending. Victim Victorious is anexamination of the ways in which victims come to rise above the challenges that they face.Victims may be innocent bystanders, and in no way responsible for their victimhood.

Nonetheless, they can - and indeed we argue need to - take responsibility for finding a personalsolution. To assist in this task, this book chronicles the pathway of prejudice and how the painand the damage experienced by individual victims may be overcome by effort, by and on theirown behalf.

The first half of the book features outsider views of victimhood. A range of professionals, philosophers, psychologists, criminologists and critical theorists offer their thoughts on howpeople might overcome victimhood. The second half of the book features insider views ofvictimhood; in this section, the victims speak for themselves about their experience and howthey have endeavoured to break through their victimhood. This book is less about identifyingand proscribing the behaviours of perpetrators and more about the efforts that victims canundertake to heal themselves as they journey towards resilience and victory.
